Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wow, there is a lot going on in Six Wakes! A crew of six wakes up as clones and realize that they've all been killed off. A seriously action-packed sci-fi mystery that looks at the implications of cloning, immortality, and humanity. I love when characters are forced to team up under strange circumstances, with little to no reason to trust one another. The mystery kept me guessing and didn't see the end coming. My only issue is that it dragged some in the middle and I thought I was getting through the story much faster than I actually was.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Uncomplicated Fun The characters are, for the most part, interesting and well-written. There are one or two I found inconsistent and underdeveloped, but it's not too much of a distraction. Fitting all the backstories together and trying to relate them to the main plot mystery was a lot of fun as well. The sci-fi elements are neither original nor all that complex (I found them rather videogame-y) but they serve the purpose for this story. Overall, a solid read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent Not great, but not bad. The plot was interesting but the characters were the worst.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inspiring So much great stuff in here. They really knew what they were doing when they put this together. So alive and passionate, you could tell they put their heart into it. We would definitely recommend it, we know how much it means to us.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad A locked room mystery in spaaaaace. Not bad, the characters didn't act like centuries-old people and a lot of the banter was cringe-worthy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved This! Great book! Really interesting ideas and technology implemented in this book. Was expecting a straightforward space story but got a psychological thriller to do with identity and memory and what makes us who we are, all that mixed with a whodunnit as well. Also loved the unconventional ending which leaves a little door for maybe a sequel? One can hope! Highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling Space Mystery Pros: fantastic mystery, suspenseful, interesting technology, diverse characters / Cons: a few continuity errors / You’re introduced to all six characters, plus their AI, all at once, so it’s impressive how Lafferty keeps their voices unique and their personalities distinct. You jump around to everyone’s POV, so this is important. / The story unfolds mostly linearly, with important historical background flashbacks as needed to forward the plot, learn more about the characters, and keep you guessing about what happened. I was impressed by how intricate the various stories were and how they eventually pulled together. The pacing is great, propelling you towards the ending. / I was also impressed by the treatment of Joanna’s character. She was born with withered legs and uses a wheelchair and 2 prosthetic legs in the book. Her choice to retain this disability comes up in the book, and is handled well. / The technology and world-building were a lot of fun. There’s a series of codicils governing the creation of clones, riots, anti-cloning sentiment, the generation ship, AI, mind hacking, and more. / I did notice two minor continuity errors, one where a character got up twice to program food, and another where two characters suddenly shift from talking in the theatre to talking in one of their rooms. Hiro got a little annoying at times, but even the characters in the book complained about that./ It’s a fast paced book that kept me guessing and glued to the pages. Highly recommended.
