Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great debut by a multifaceted artist I've been a follower of Lights as a musician since her beginnings as the Drive My Soul singer. I was even more impressed by her when I saw her artistic skills with the Everybody Breaks a Glass lyric video following the release of Siberia. I didn't think her music could get any better after Little Machines, but Skin & Earth is by far her best album to date. When I learned there was an accompanying graphic novel, I had to read it! Skin & Earth is an interesting dystopian read. The art is fantastic, and the tie-ins with the music and QR code creativity are definitely bonuses. The setting is unique and interesting, and while it all seems far away, it also feels very personal. Lights did a good job of creating a flawed yet strong female character who, thankfully, didn't need to be rescued by a man in the end. I also like that the character was bisexual, but it wasn't talked about like it needed to be explained. She just is. Very refreshing! It would have been five stars except for a couple factors. I felt like there was opportunity for more sprinkling of backstory into the narrative, as I felt a little confused throughout most regarding the setting until the end. Very top heavy. I think some details could have been spread out. There were also a couple of moments where the images could have been relied upon more to cut out some "telling" in the dialogue/text (e.g. did she really need to scream "he's dead!"?). Overall a great graphic novel debut by Lights!
