Lomax said, "The 'Songs of the Cattle Trail and Cow Camp' does not purport to be an anthology of Western verse. As its title indicates, the contents of the book are limited to attempts, more or less poetic, in translating scenes connected with the life of a cowboy. The volume is in reality a by-product of my earlier collection, 'Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads.' The books contains lyrics only to 74 songs and ballads.

This edition of the book contains 10 place- annd time-relevant illustrations unique to this edition.

Beyond question, John Lomax did more than any other person to preserve the songs and music that formed the backbone of our present-day music. Not only did he gather Western and Cowboy music, but Appalachian and blues, sometimes visiting jails and prisons to record original compositions.

Cowboy songs were just the tip of the iceberg for Lomax and, indeed, his entire family. They scoured the backroads and hollows of the South, collecting folk songs that formed the basis of today's bluegrass, country, and folk music. Lomax was also responsible for collecting the early blues songs, often venturing into jails and prisons to record them.
