#1 New York Times bestseller Brandon Mull launches Scholastic's brand-new multiplatform phenomenon.

Four children separated by vast distances all undergo the same ritual, watched by cloaked strangers. Four flashes of light erupt, and from them emerge the unmistakable shapes of incredible beasts - a wolf, a leopard, a panda, a falcon. Suddenly the paths of these children - and the world - have been changed forever.

Enter the world of Erdas, where every child who comes of age must discover if they have a spirit animal, a rare bond between human and beast that bestows great powers to both. A dark force has risen from distant and long-forgotten lands, and has begun an onslaught that will ravage the world. Now the fate of Erdas has fallen on the shoulders of four young strangers . . . and on you.

Part engrossing book series, part action role-playing game - discover your spirit animal and join the adventure in Fall 2013.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great story to read or to listen too Ether as a book or an audio book version, the story is really captivating. A new universe to discover but with parallels you can build with the geography of the Earth. Why can we not care more for the nature and the other animals. A teenager story also captivating for older "forever kids" like me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Te start of a great serie I had the opportunity to discover the universe of the spirit animals after the full series had been published. Therefore, I did not had to wait for the next book to come. This was a great time, which I repeated using the audio book version with my kids. You just never want to spot progressing through the story and just continue chapter after chapter and book after book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My daughter & are enjoying reading this together I just read Catherine's review below and I can certainly see her point of view. Given that my daughter doesn't have access to (or care about) the video game version of this series, this concern doesn't apply to our family. I also agree with her statement that more attention is given to girls' appearance. Because we are reading it together I am using this as an opportunity to discuss these gender roles and how they may or not reflect my daughters experiences. As such it isn't a concern for us, but I think her criticism is worth noting, especially for a child reading this book on her own. I do however, really like this book. If your goal it get kids excited about reading I think this is a good fit. Often these adventure style books are well liked by my daughter, but I dread reading them to her. This is not the case here. The book is well crafted and the writing enjoyable. The characters are distinctive (coming from very diverse ways of life) and it has been exciting to see them develop, learn about their connections to their spirit animals and follow their adventures. We look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Video games and gender stereotypes - not what I'm looking for in a book This was a gift for my son. As far as the adventure goes, this is a good story. It got my hackles up right away, though, by being linked to a video game. My kids do not need encouragement to get on their devices, they need encouragement to read. Now they will only read chapters because I won't let them play the game otherwise. Also, although there is good representation of genders and people of colour, there is WAY MORE TIME spent on describing the girls' appearance than the boys'. It talks about their clothes, how attractive they are, how they're "not like the other girls"... That kind of talk doesn't help either male OR female readers identify with those characters. Disappointing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Left you wanting the next book immediately Imagine having a leopard to protect and guide you. That’s what every kid in “Wild Born” wishes for on their 12th birthday. Brandon Mull has written the first book “Wild Born” in this new “Spirit Animals” series, which follows four kids who have summoned very special animals and receive great powers. Together the kids and their animals become heroes and fight in a battle that will decide the fate of humanity, while also struggling to create a bond with their animals and work as a team. This book is exciting because there was always something interesting going on from fighting their way up a mountain to summoning a spirit animal. Near the end of the book there is a great battle on a mountain that was three chapters long and left you wanting the next book immediately. However I was left guessing who the villain really was up to the end making it a mystery for you as you read the book. The book also has an online game which is definitely worth the visit. It lets you join the adventure and even unlock a spirit animal of your own. This book would be great for people that love action adventure or fantasy books. If you enjoyed reading “39 Clues” then you will definitely like “Wild Born.” More books in this series are coming soon so you will have a year of awesome reads ahead.
