Thus they had been brought to see in Him that very Father Whom not seeing He had made them love as they could not have loved without Him. It was ever dawning on them, though their faith was yet weak, that he who had seen tbeir Lord had seen the Father, as He declared. If all of this were true for our Lord's disciples even before He was glorified, how true ought it to be for us who have been made to know not only the mysteries of creation and preservation, but of redemption and sanctification as well! We have seen and heard the things which not only kings and prophets but even apostles waited for. He has indeed for us manifested the Father's name, but has He by that manifestation inspired our lives to glad discipleship? Second Though t.--The great manifestation of the fulness of the Father's name is only vouchsafed by our Lord to those whom God has given Him out of the world. It is a strange expression, very full of mystery, the mystery of the fewness of God's accepted ones. Not an actual fewness, for the redeemed are a company too great for any man to number--nevertheless a fewness in comparison of the vastness of the number of rejected ones. Why? Does not God love all His children? Is it not said expressly that He would have all come to the knowledge of the truth? It is useless for us to hope to solve the mystery in this life. Without doubt the heavenly Father may have many ways of bringing His children to a blessed immortality besides the way of the Gospel which He has been pleased to make known to us, and by which alone we can be saved.
