about

An all-original novel based upon the explosive new series on CBS All Access

Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.

She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea.

As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so, she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life—until now.
David Mack lives in New York City.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from David Mack shows why he is the premier Star Trek novelist One of the most common criticisms of Star Trek: Discovery is how it doesn't seem to fit with established Star Trek lore and canon. Desperate Hours does a great job of navigating such a mine field. Without falling into the common tropes of fan service or pandering, Mack does an excellent job weaving in existing Star Trek history with the new characters and storylines introduced in the Discovery TV series. I highly recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I wish the series was as good as this book! Having been thoroughly underwhelmed by the first few episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, i was hesitant to buy this book, but I wound up getting it for two reasons: 1) It was written by David Mack, who has delivered some of the best Trek-lit of the last decade, and 2) Spock is in it! I'd read just about anything with Spock as a character. I am glad I read Desperate Hours, as it was far more entertaining than any episodes of ST:D have been so far. Actually, my only major complaint about this book is that it made me a little sad that Captain Georgiou was killed off in the second episode of Discovery; she's a much more likable character than Captain Lorca, and I wish they'd kept her around for a few more episodes. Desperate Hours isn't the greatest Star Trek novel ever written, but it "feels" a lot more like Star Trek than anything the Discovery series has presented so far, and not just because of the presence of TOS characters like Spock, Captain Pike, Dr. Boyce and Number One. Overall, I recommend Desperate Hours even to those, like me, who aren't particularly thrilled with Star Trek: Discovery as a TV series. I'm looking forward to the possibility of future ST:D novels set on the Shenzou during Georgiou's captaincy. Fingers crossed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoying this new Trek Any fan of Trek will enjoy the new series more with a greater grasp on into the background of these characters. David Mack is one of the best writers to ever enter the Trek genre and he doesn't disappoint. This novel certainly seems to accomplish its goal.
