about

Still With Us is a heartbreaking and at-times horrific account of one boy's flight from terror during the 1996 war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Forced to become a father to his two younger siblings and mainstay for other lost children, Msenwa Oliver Mweneake gives his eyewitness account of the carnage of war, including indiscriminate mass murder and rape. He survived the dehumanizing effects of living with tens of thousands in UNHCR refugee camps, battled desperately against governmental and NGO bureaucracy and almost lost hope.

Despite the atrocious injustices of war, Msenwa never lost his faith, believing his life was preserved for a higher purpose. His story awakens hope after despair and inspires good after evil. The revealing of this untold story dispels apathy and stimulates engagement in positive change for the countless who still suffer in his homeland and refugee camps. Proceeds from this book are dedicated to empower Congolese with education and other supports through The Msenwa Foundation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from True Inspiration in DesparateTimes Amazing Read: Oliver's book is a true story of UN neglect & the deplorable conditions for young girls & boys in the Congo. Poor conditions, rape & murder are ongoing even today. He returned to a war torn Congo from refugee camp & worked diligently to facilitate peace amongst all the tribes even though dangerous, threatened & jailed. His book is an inspirational story that will inspire many, educate & bring awareness to the misjustice that continues in the Congo. Reading this amazing book makes you feel you are present with Oliver in his journey of isolation & pain with an uplifting ending of determination, hope & faith.. I hope more people get to experience & share this story to enrich their own lives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Be moved. Be inspired. After reading Still With Us, I was moved beyond measure. Msenwa’s personal journey as a survivor of the 1996 war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) just shook me to the core - from the horrific events he had to witness and endure while in search of his parents to the struggles and sacrifices he had to make in order to arrive in Canada. The story leaves one inspired with messages of living life to the fullest and with the belief that nothing is too big or too small for us to tackle. To think of all the Congolese who were impacted by this war and who are still affected 20 year’s later astounds me! It gives even more reason to advocate for Msenwa’s message of courage, perseverance, resilience, hope, and gratitude.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!! Ohh my! Just finished Oliver Mweneake's book tonight. Seriously could-not-put-it-down (those who know me well would know that that is crazy because I usually hate reading)!! So many times I would stop reading and then remember that this is actually your true life story, not some random story made up. It is an absolute miracle you are still with us, your story is so heart wrenching yet so incredible all at the same time, Oliver!! Friends, do your self a favour and buy this book. Not only do the proceeds from the book go towards supporting Nyarugusu Camp refugees in Tanzania and widows and orphans in the Democratic Republic of Congo (just purchasing this book is helping meet real needs) but it will absolutely open your eyes to the world.... and when you're done reading you'll wonder when his next book will be out so you can buy it and have another read-a-thon!! Editorial Reviews

Msenwa bears witness to unspeakable horrors. Throughout his story it is his hope and inspiration that stands out even in the midst of year after year of hardship. His ability to survive is a statement to his strength and determination and allows us to see how even in the midst of such horror a human being can emerge stronger and build a full and rich life. Dr. Ellen Katz.Msenwa's story shook me from inside. He has given a voice to the millions who haven't had the opportunity to tell their own story of courage and survival. His description of carefree pre-war village life makes me ache for the people of DR Congo and mourn their lost way of life. The word "Refugee" sounds and looks different to me now. This book changed me. Heather HaynesThis true-life story is riveting, compelling, thought-provoking and inspiring. Still With US compels us to look deep within, to examine our attitudes and reason for living. Msenwa is an example of a person who could be full of self-pity but instead chooses the road less traveled, dedicating his life to help those less fortunate. If our world had more Msenwa(s), the strife in war-torn Congo would end and greed would be no more. Marilyn James. As community NGO immigration worker in Eastern Ontario assisting Afghan refugee families in the 1990s adapt to their new life in Canada, I had heard many stories from young and old about their plight in their war-torn homeland and in the camps of Pakistan. Despite previously hearing of these experiences, I could not help but be immensely moved, at times to tears, by Msenwa's story of man's inhumanity to man, and by his faith, hope, and his ultimate desire to truly make a difference in this world. Paul Kirby.
