about

What if safety felt like prison?

How does a girl who never had a place in the world before it ended, find her place in the new world?

Ninety-five percent of the people on the planet are dead. Lizzie is pregnant from an end of world one-night stand, and the situation is complicated. Her family, friends, the government of Provo, aka The City and one of the last outposts of civilization, all want to keep her safe.

And it’s driving her nuts.

She should be staying safe inside the walls of The City, but she’s got to get out. A dangerous mission is exactly what she needs right now.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun post-apocalyptic scifi :D Driven by fear after a world-wide pandemic killed over 90% of the population, Lizzie and her friends--Zach and Nev--leave their homes and prior lives in Bellingham, WA in a page turning road trip to connect with a family and friends in book one. They plunder homes and stores to meet all their survival needs, trying to outrun a man avenging his brother's death, breeders in the wilderness, and preppers all too happy to kill first and ask questions later in order to preserve what little is left of their own lives. In book two, the characters find themselves in Provo, UT with the creature comforts they craved and the people they drove halfway across the nation to seek. But, still, something is off. Something is not right. With the lure of freedom, jobs, food, their overall needs taken care of, especially women of child-bearing age, it is easy to get comfortable. Unless you're Lizzie Goodin-Guerrero aka Crazy Lizzie. Never have the walls of her life caved in more than they do in Provo. Trying to escape this power-hungry town, the sense of normalcy it tries to provides, and perhaps even herself, she pulls her friends and father into one bad situation after another. Where the first book focused on fight-and-flight type responses to the dawning of an apocalypse, the second book slows down to explore the many ins-and-outs of rebuilding ones personal life, relationships, and restructuring communities. Choices are weighted far more than they were before. Every moment matters. Every decision made with a life-or-death edge. Even decisions as hopeful as whom should one love? Fun post-apocalyptic scifi :D I look forward to more Robert L. Slater!
