about

Perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare's The Infernal Devices series, this is the explosive conclusion to Susan Dennard's trilogy, which started with Something Strange and Deadly and continued with A Darkness Strange and Lovely. With supernatural forces, epic romance, and a mysterious Egyptian city, Eleanor and her team are set for an adventure they will never forget.

It has been a tumultuous time for Eleanor Fitt since life as she knew it in Philadelphia came abruptly to an end. Although the Spirit-Hunters—Joseph, Jie, and Daniel—have helped her survive, Eleanor has lost just about everything.

And now, Jie is missing—taken by the evil necromancer Marcus. Eleanor is determined not only to get her back but to finally end this nightmare. To do so, she must navigate the hot desert streets of nineteenth-century Egypt amid the rising Dead, her unresolved feelings for Daniel, and her volatile relationships with Joseph and Oliver, her demon. And it won't be easy. Because Allison, her friend from Philadelphia, has tagged along, becoming strangely entangled in Eleanor's mission.

It will take all of Eleanor's powers of black magic, and all of Daniel's and Joseph's trust, to succeed. But there will be a price.

Susan Dennard is a writer turned marine biologist turned writer again. The Something Strange and Deadly trilogy is her debut. Among the traits she shares with her heroine Eleanor are a weakness for Shakespeare quotes, a healthy appetite for baked goods, and an insatiable curiosity. Sadly, Susan does not get to wear a corset or wave a p...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good conclusion. After being disappointed in book 2, this one is back to its form. Eleanor is tough and I still like Jie. Good ending but a little sad. Good trilogy but second book was the worst of the three and the first book was the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartbreaking This book. This book tore my heart apart and made me sob. This book was a thrill ride of cinematic mind images and awesome characters. This book was...nearly perfect. (Mild spoilers for the first two books, and maybe spoilers for this one - hidden, of course.) The main source of it's perfection: Eleanor. Eleanor. ELEANOR. I think she might just be my favorite heroine ever. I fell in love with her in the first book, when she won me over with her kick-butt determination and grit. One of my favorite things about this series is it's unflinching honesty - I mean, what other series is brave enough (especially one based in Victorian-era America) to have their heroine's hand gnawed off by a zombie? And Eleanor takes what is thrown at her, and gets on with what needs doing. She is hopelessly flawed and makes astronomical mistakes, but she takes the time to think things out - no excess of dramatic irony here - and figures out what needs to be done, and then she goes out and does it. She leads her friends and acknowledges her mistakes and focuses on the matter at hand. She is brilliant at dealing with everything life throws at her. She is kicked down again and again and again and gets up with such grace and honest determination that you are forced to cheer for her. She stays on task and, despite being thrown more crap than anybody could ever deserve, avoids angst and self-pity like the plague. So I came into this loving Eleanor. And in this book, she blew me away. She's lost so much and comes so far, and somehow still manages to learn and accept her mistakes. Her romantic arc was just about my favorite ever - I mean, at one point someone's confessing his love and she's like, "now? Really? We've got other things to worry about." When does that ever happen? Her practicality and stick-to-it-ness really endeared me to her. And yet the romantic arc was honest and lovely and squee-worthy and ultimately heartbreaking in the best way possible. "...A vast army has never stopped you before," I muttered to myself, folding my fingers into fists. We were going to face Marcus here, and we were going to defeat him. That's all there was to it." Eleanor, you beautiful, capable person. You determined, unflinching, wonderful heroine. I love you so much. I just wanted to cheer her every step of the way. And at the end - no spoilers - but at the end, when I was reduced to a sobbing little ball of feels, Eleanor stands up - literally stands up, throws back her shoulders, internalizes everything, and marches straight into the fray and into my eternal good books. This series is just so awesome. From the zombies that I actually liked - and I hate zombies - to the unflinching, honest brutality tempered with fierce emotion, it did weird things to my heart. It forces you to confront these emotions point blank and carries you through them with complete finesse. It shredded my heart and made me feel it was a privilige to have my heart mutilated by this lovely book. I...am just in awe. Well done, Susan Dennard. Well done.
