Questing after Pancho Villa's revolutionary forces, Ambrose Bierce rode into Mexico in 1913 and was never seen again. He left behind him theDevil's Dictionary and a remarkable body of short fiction.

This new collection gathers some of Bierce's finest stories, including the celebrated Civil War fictions 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' and 'Chickamauga', his macabre masterpieces, and his tales of supernatural horror. Reminiscent of Poe, these stories are marked by a sardonic humour and a realistic study of tense emotional states.

From Our Editors

Ambrose Bierce was one of the most unique famous and unique literary figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Unfortunately, fate - or something far more ominous - cut his brilliant career short when he disappeared within the borders of Mexico in 1914. While he was alive, his impeccable talents in writing journalistic and fiction pieces earned him great respect and his novel Devil`s Dictionary became a classic of American literature. Tales of Soldiers and Civilians and Other Stories features some of his most famous short works, including "My Favorite Murder" and "An Occurrence at Owl Creek."
