about

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.

In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).

In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.

Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”).

Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.
Lauren Graham is an actor, writer, and producer best known for her roles on the critically acclaimed series Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. She is also the New York Times bestselling author of Someday, Someday, Maybe. Graham has performed on Broadway and appeared in such films as Bad Santa, Because I Said So, and Max. Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved this book I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. I am a Gilmore Girls fan and it felt like I was reading from the point of view of Lorelai. I loved this book, Lauren Graham is such a good writer. I love her style of writing in this book. I found that the way in which she has written this book it feels as if we are old friends sitting down having a chat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Graham is completely honest, charming, and funny in this book. I was nervous to read it because I am so attached to her as Lorelei, but this book made me love her even more. I would 100% recommend the audio book narrated by her as well- it adds another layer to the story, and it feels as if she is talking right to you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Must read Tremendous in all aspects.
Date published: 2017-07-01
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light, easy read A little bit of Lorelai will always be a part of Lauren, so this book felt like Lorelai was talking to me. It was fast paced, there were tangents here and there, but I wouldn't expect anything else from Lorelai Gilmore. Lauren ends each chapter with an important message that readers of all ages can take to heart.
Date published: 2017-06-23
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun, easy read I enjoyed the book and liked the behind the scenes commentary on Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. I LOVE Parenthood and would have liked to read even more on that. I liked that Lauren Graham added the section about tips on how to write and giving yourself time every day to write and having a timer set up. I think I hyped up the book more than I should have and I guess I wish there was more content in the book but I did enjoy it, and it was an easy read for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVED THIS BOOK!! If you are a fan, you will absolutely enjoy this read. It was light and funny, with lots of Lauren's signature charm. If you are expecting the next great American novel, this isn't the read for you. But if you are a LG fan, a GG fan, you should add this one to your collection.
Date published: 2017-05-25
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Gilmore fan Love Lauren Graham and the timing of releasing of this book was perfect with release of Gilmore Girls year in the life. All over would have loved more gilmore girls behind the scene comments but overall all a good read
Date published: 2017-05-23
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hmmmmmm..... I have always been a big fan of Gilmore Girls, and I was curious to read about the woman behind the character. But this book - albeit funny - feels a little thin. The fact that the publication coincided so perfectly with one of the most anticipated show revival is also problematic... A fun read but maybe not worth the buzz around it.
Date published: 2017-05-09
Rated 3 out of 5 by from I wanted to love this... I love Gilmore Girls and Lauren Graham so was very excited to finally read this. She provides lots of insight into Gilmore Girls and I liked that she writes the way that she talks in real life. But some parts feel like they dragged on...and some parts she babbles and you just want her to get to the point. It was good, but I think I hyped it up too much in mind before reading it.
Date published: 2017-04-11

Date published: 2017-04-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome book! I bought this book as a birthday gift to myself and I finished it in one day! Lauren Graham is incredibly witty and charming while she takes you through a journey of her life's successes, failures and other anecdotes about being an actor. As a Gilmore Girls fan, it felt like I was reading a book written by Lorelai Gilmore, with her quirky charm. A great read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book !! Love Lauren Graham This is a great book. I am not fully finished it yet, but will be soon !!! Lauren is a great actor and writer. I really Love the Gilmore Girls Show and have all the season in DVD. Reading this book about which episodes Lauren loved acting in each season makes you want to rewatch ( which i am) the season as you read so you can see what she is talking about in this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Getting to know Lorelai As a gilmore girls fan I loved getting an inside look at the life of Lauren Graham/Lorelai Gilmore!
Date published: 2017-03-29
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great stories I felt I got to really know Lauren Graham. Book is full of interesting stories of her growing up and behind the scenes of Gilmore Girls. Her writing is upbeat and funny. If you loved the Gilmore Girls you will love this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it. While reading this book it really made you feel like you were sitting in the room with her and she was telling you the story. A real page turner, really enjoyed reading it.
Date published: 2017-03-21
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Recommend for any Gilmore Girls fan I'm a long-time fan of Gilmore Girls, Parenthood and of Lauren Graham herself. Her voice is distinct and engaging, both on screen and on paper. I love her sense of humour, and some of her quirky thoughts are ones I've had myself, so I can appreciate many of the tangents she goes off on. I loved her reflections on shooting two of my favourite shows and particularly enjoyed reading details about the Gilmore Girls reboot and all of the emotions involved. It was also great to read her thoughts on writing, a long-time but lowly prioritized hobby of mine.
Date published: 2017-03-21
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it!! I love Lauren. I was waiting so long for her book to come out. It sounds just like her. Its funny and quirky and everything you would expect from her!
Date published: 2017-03-20
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lauren Graham = Lorelai Gilmore If you love Gilmore Girls, you'll love this, even when Lauren's name-dropping gets a tad bit annoying. She writes in the same way that she speaks, so she sounds like Lorelai throughout. It's a fun insight into her life, but I would have liked more of a scoop on her GG cast-mates. If you're looking for an in-depth look at GG behind-the-scenes, you won't really get it...but you will get a little bit of it. Also, don't worry about spoilers. As long as you've read all seven main seasons, you're good. #plumreview
Date published: 2017-03-15
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A funny Quick Read Lauren's writing is fast and quick to read. She writes exactly like how she speaks and that's really enjoyable. I wish it was a little longer because I didn't want it to be over.
Date published: 2017-03-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth reading for sure! I really enjoyed this book. I am a HUGE gilmore girls fan and was slightly worried this book would disappoint me but I just love Lauren Graham even more now. The book made me laugh - it's almost as if her and lorelai are one person! #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun, quick read I found this book to be a light hearted, glimpse into her life. She doesn't share too many personal details about her life but the stories she does tell are funny. I would love to read more about her life so hopefully she will write another in the future. #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A fast read 2/5 - "Talking as fast as I can" by Lauren Graham At the beginning of this book you learn a bit about Lauren's childhood, family, education and theater experiences. This was interesting. "You can't be vegan just for Ellen" was a weird chapter that made fun of Hollywood diet advice. Lauren claims that she's against plastic surgery and only starts to talk about the Gilmore Girls series on page 66 (almost a third of the book in). Lauren recaps story lines of Gilmore Girls and talks about contract negotiations in season 7. She talks a little about her relationships, being a judge on "Project Runway" and her life experiences as a celebrity. She kept mentioning her novel and Shark Tank. The best part of the book was learning about behind the scenes for the reboot on Netflix. Overall, this memoir was a fast read that I thought I would have enjoyed much more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love love love I am so in love with this book. Lauren Graham is fantastic, and while reading this book, I felt like I could really hear her talking (fast, of course). I think that if you haven't watched Gilmore Girls, this book probably won't make a lot of sense for you. There's also a chapter about Parenthood (the show), so if you haven't seen that either, then that chapter won't make a lot of sense to you. Aside from that, Lauren Graham is just so witty and humorous, and this book definitely did not disappoint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved it! I absolutely loved this book. It may have helped that I am a huge Gilmore Girls fan too. When I first started reading it I wasn't sure I liked the way Lauren Graham wrote. She tended to write like she was talking to you, it was more annoying than funny. By the end of the book she tended to do it less which made me like it more. If you are a Gilmore Girls fan I would recommend it. Unless you haven't watched the new reboot on Netflix, then skip the end until you do as there are spoilers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In love with this book! I was already a huge fan of Lauren Graham, but this book made me an even BIGGER fan. On top of the fact that this book really shows her experience being in Gilmore Girls, which is a show I love, this book gave me a better understanding of the true person that Lauren is and that just made me love her more. Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must for Gilmore Girls fanatics like me I really enjoyed this memoir by Lauren Graham. It's written in her typical Lauren Graham rambly style but it's cute and sweet and nostalgic. I like how she brought us along on her journey of the reboot of Gilmore Girls which is one of my favourite shows ever. I watched Gilmore Girls (the reboot) as soon as it came out and I didn't love it but I really liked it. Even more I liked seeing it from Lauren's perspective. Now all I need is for Alexis to come out with a book!
Date published: 2016-12-29
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful, uplifting, and easy read! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm a huge Gilmore Girls fan and I bought it hoping for some tidbits from behind the scenes. Which I got, however there was a lot more than that. It was funny, unconventional, entertaining. A really good but not dull or tedious overview of Lauren's life and how she got where she is now. Her journey through show business, her life musings ect. She doesn't take herself too seriously and it was a really refreshing read.
Date published: 2016-12-28

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read! I love Lauren Graham's humour and wit. But I can see how difficult it would be to follow or enjoy if you have not been a faithful follower of Lauren's journey.
Date published: 2016-12-22
Rated 2 out of 5 by from A disappointment I wish I could say I loved this book but I found it difficult to get through. Graham's writing was a bit too chaotic. While it was interesting to see some of the behind the scenes details of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, the book didn't hold my attention and seemed to not know where it was going.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this! If you weren't ready for the Gilmore Girls revival episodes to end, you need to read this to keep the train going. Lauren Graham is the TV mother we all want to be, and her quirky, heartfelt tone in this book won't let you put it down. A must read for anyone who grew up (and still loves!) the Gilmore Girls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Uniquely Lauren from beginning to end! Laugh-out-loud funny, poignant at times, and uniquely Lauren from beginning to end. I've always appreciated Lauren Graham's sense of humour as it's very similar to my own. She's the master of a long, ramble-y story that ends up being so funny you forget you were even waiting for the punch-line at the end; but then, when she get's to it, you laugh even harder. More than once I found myself laughing as I went back to re-read something on the previous page because the sly comment she'd snuck in had only just registered in my brain. I think this book is entertaining regardless of whether or not you're a big fan of Gilmore Girls, but being a fan definitely made it even more enjoyable. I loved revisiting the original series from her perspective and reading her thoughts on returning to Lorelai so many years later. It was interesting to read that a lot of the simple moments that had me choked up watching "A Year in the Life" were also moments she found difficult to get through without becoming too emotional; in a way, it makes the return to Stars Hollow even more special. I've always enjoyed memoirs that read like a conversation; they feel very personal...and I find it impossible to put them down once I start reading. I inhaled this book, was completely absorbed, and wished it was about 200 pages longer when I reached the end. #plumreview
