about

The classic and indispensable work on teaching children at home, fully updated for today's new laws, new lifestyles, and the growing new generation of homeschooling parents

Today more than one and a half million children are being taught at home by their own parents. In this expanded edition of the book that helped launch the whole movement, Pat Farenga has distilled John Holt's timeless understanding of the ways children come to understand the world and added up-to-the-moment legal, financial, and logistical advice. No parent even considering homeschooling should be without this wise and unique reference.

Rather than proposing that parents turn their homes into miniature schools, Holt and Farenga demonstrate how ordinary parents can help children grow as social, active learners. Chapters on living with children, "serious play," children and work, and learning difficulties will fascinate and encourage parents and help them enjoy each "homeschool" day. John Holt's warm understanding of children and his passionate belief in every child's ability to learn have made this book the bible of homeschooling families everywhere.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Challenges the status quo This is a big and very wordy book by an extremely influential figure in the modern homeschooling movement, and co-written-updated by Patrick Farenga, who has also been heavily involved in homeschooling in the us, particularly as editor of gws. Not to worry about fame, etc. I skipped here they and everywhere in this book, because I didn't want the history. I wanted some details of how to do it. I did not find the book well-organised, and the chapter headings didn't do much to enlighten me any what I might find in each chapter. It was quite a bit of reading to wade through, but the gems are in there. Many intriguing stories from many different real learning situations were supported by considered opinions by both authors. This is great stuff for helping to re-form one's ideas about how education should work. I found myself wanting an author who would mine John and Patrick's work, and produce a more concise, clearly organised book which I could read in 2 hours or less. I found sections of the final chapter about how to do Homeschool, particularly the section about how to discuss subject choices with your child. A very useful book.
