Soon to be a major motion picture, Lincoln, from Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning writer Tony Kushner, and starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the President and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln.

The acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin illuminates Lincoln’s political genius in a highly original work, as the one-term congressman and prairie lawyer rises from obscurity to prevail over three gifted rivals of national reputation to become president.
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry.
Each had energetically sought the presidency. Lincoln succeeded because he possessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience what they were feeling, to understand their motives.
This multiple biography is centered on Lincoln’s mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation’s history.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Great One This book was written the same way Lincoln is believed to have spoken. With great care, at a good pace, spoken so that everyone can enjoy it, and with importance being placed on every single word.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great book There's no point in trying to be clever about it, this is simply a great book about one of the most important times in U.S. history. There has been so much written about Lincoln over the past 200 years that its hard to believe that there is anything new to say about him. Goodwin takes an interesting approach by examining Lincoln in contrast to the other men who competed for the Republican nomination in 1860 (the "team of rivals" of the title). Lincoln is portrayed by Goodwin as the ultimate pragmatist, which goes a long way to explaining why President Obama is a great admirer of this book. As well, Goodwin plums the depths of the U.S. civil war, the defining event of the country's history, to show how it affected everyone living in the U.S. at the time and all generations to come. This is a long, detailed book, but I finished it wanting to know more about its subject. I can't recommend it more highly.
