about

Set in the magical Wessex landscape so familiar from Thomas Hardy's early work, Tess of the D'Urbervilles is unique among his great novels for the intense feeling that he lavished upon his heroine, Tess-a pure woman betrayed by love. Written in an era of considerable social change, the journey of hardships faced by Tess and her family reflects Hardy's observations of the disparate social classes and the fading aristocracies of nineteenth-century England. Hardy poured all of his profound empathy for both humanity and the rhythms of natural life into this story of Tess's beauty, goodness, and tragic fate. In doing so, he created a character who, like Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina, has achieved classic stature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read for lovers of literature and justice... A heartbreaking story of a former time in which women had no rights, no defence, no hope, but that which was tied to the men to whom they attached themselves or cowered beneath. A story of vile injustice that called a generation to challenge cruel systems of religion and government. A tragedy written in beauteous prose that will captivate the reader in each sigh and landscape, and incite hope till the finish... A must read for all lovers of justice and literature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oh, Tess! Not a light read. In keeping with Hardy, Tess is a young and innocent girl, that learns the world is not. I loved this book, although, I would loved a different ending, it was true to Tess.
