Rated 4 out of 5 by from eye-opening this was an interesting read. i definitely enjoyed the quest the boy goes on in search of the "treasure"... it's kinda deep and i feel like everyone will take something from it. i think i will reread it in a few years, when i am in a different chapter of my life, and i'll be able to view the message of this book in another light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delving into Sacred Philosophy This novel is for any reader craving a character who experiences a spiritual awakening, a sort of cosmic consciousness through his own endeavour to follow his dream. The characters were brilliantly mysterious with such rich insights to life. This story is drenched in soul.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read but doesn't live up to the hype I've been meaning to read The Alchemist for a long time and although it was whimsical and easy to follow, it did not live up to my high expectations. It really is a nice story and worth the read though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not what I expected... Not what I expected, but I was completely blown away! It was absolutely wonderful and gave me a new lens to look at life through. As a student in my 20s, who doesn't really know which way to go in life, this story brought me comfort and allowed me some wisdom into how I should decide on my future.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from My expections might have been a bit high I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t as life changing as everyone said it would be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eye-Opening I first read this book when I was in highschool. It has stayed with me since as a guide for how I should go about my life. Inspiring and an easy-read. You can easily finish it in one sitting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One to read again and again I can definitely see this on a college reading list where students are asked to interpret the meanings of each character and lesson. This is a book that you need to keep on the shelf and read over and over. Each time you read it there is a new life lesson. It definitely requires that the reader not be too literal, as some of the messages are not as clearly spelt out as others. I like that it makes the reader consider their own personal journey. Otherwise, it's just a nice story about a nice boy finding his way in the world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent The Alchemist is an excellent read. As someone who does not normally read fiction, this book was a delight. Paulo Coelho does a fantastic job painting the narrative that will take the reader on a wild adventure while leaving enough for your own imagination. The book provides the reader opportunities for reflection as the moral of the story can easily be applied to the readers' own life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A MUST READ FROM ME This book is just one of those that made me realize how amazing life is, and I would totally consider it a must read. Loved it all and would not reccomend enoguh.
Date published: 2018-04-06
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mixed feelings This is a book for someone in the midst of major turning point. A high school student unsure what university to go to. An unsatisfied worker that doesn't know whether to quit their job. This is a book that would resonate deeply with someone that has dreams and ambitions. There definitely were some passages that gave me chills. Some parts that I still think about. But I find the book too optimistic and religious for me. Still, it's a book that can change people's lives.
Date published: 2018-03-31
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Required Reading Interestingly, this is a book that no one wanted to publish and once some did agree to publish it, there were issues about the title. Paulo held firm to his beliefs and this book is described as an "International Bestselling Phenomenon" Santiago's journey is to find treasure in the worldly sense but what he discovers is far from worldly. This is a book that can be re-read at different parts of one's life journey.

Date published: 2017-12-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dare to Dream! I've reread this book numerous times: both in Portuguese and in English - I do find certain things tend to get lost in translation from the native tongue, but this book is without a doubt worth the read. Paolo Coelho is one of my all time favourite authors. There's something about his style of writing, the messages in each of his books, and the mannerism in which he writes them. The Alchemist is sure to be both inspirational and refreshing. There is so much self-discovery, wisdom and beauty while journeying with the young Shephard's character - and not just for him, but for yourself reading the book as well.
Date published: 2017-11-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Self-Discovery This book follows a shepherd boy's journey to self-discovery. The imagery is great and so are the nuggets of wisdom passed on from the characters he meets along the way.
Date published: 2017-11-24
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wisdom in paper form This book brings you to a higher level of conscious and is packed full of insights without being over the top. It's a wonderful journey, and I haven't found one person who's read it that said they wouldn't read it again. A must-read. #Plumreview
Date published: 2017-11-23
Rated 4 out of 5 by from classic Although the Alchemist reads somewhat like a fable, a story with a moral or philosophical message - its pastoral simplicity and the constant weave of insights and wisdom with regard to a higher consciousness, is refreshing and inspiring.
Date published: 2017-11-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic Wounderful book to read when you stuck in between... to make thin of the journey and enjoy it more.
Date published: 2017-11-09
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feeling stuck? Read this book! I recommend this book to all my friends and even bought a copy of it for my niece. It's not long, it's suitable for all age groups as it is a simple story but Paulo Coelho basically wrote a book that reads like a poem. It is magical, beautiful and provides all sorts of inspiration.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite Book of All Time Everyone should own a copy of this book! I've read it 5 times and get something new and inspiring from it every time.
Date published: 2017-10-13
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read This a great book about following your dreams and features an incredible journey. Although not quite what I was expecting this was still a great read.
Date published: 2017-10-07
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great themes... but slow read I like the themes and message behind the novel. Unfortunately, the narrative gets quite repetitive in terms of trying to get the message of living life to the fullest across.
Date published: 2017-09-24
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everyone should read this book once The Alchemist inspires you to follow your heart. It's a little juvenile in its writing style, a little too simple for everyone's tastes. But it will teach you something no matter who you are. (And at 150 pages, you'll race through it besides). Highly recommend to everyone -- especially those who feel "stuck."
Date published: 2017-09-18
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good Not what I expected but still pretty good.
Date published: 2017-08-18
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed I didn't realize this novel was written quite like a fable. Not my style, but still a memorable story. I would recommend to the nature-loving spirituals out there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it! Love the morals and the writing style!
Date published: 2017-08-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best book ever! I have read the alchemist a few times throughout my life when I need guidance and am ready for a change. It reads as though every sentence is a quote. It is poetically and beautifully written and so deep and insightful. Paulo Coelho is one of my favoriate authors and met him in person too and he was so kind and gracious... just as you'ld imagined him to be.
Date published: 2017-08-13
Rated 3 out of 5 by from good read little slow at times but a good read
Date published: 2017-07-23
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Little Read I agree with one of the other reviews, that there are some noteworthy quotes in this classic novel. I like the spiritual aspect. Could have used a little more action/excitement to really keep in interested.
Date published: 2017-07-21
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic fictional story which encourages thought. This novel is a great read! In my opinion, it is a classic novel within the "spiritual" genre of books. A lot of great quotations come from this book. I found myself re-reading paragraphs, not because I didn't understand them... I was re-reading them as they provided some "light-bulb" moments. Very easy to read and would recommend for teens and up!
Date published: 2017-07-19
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must read I bought this a few months ago and loved it so much that I had to buy a copy for 2 of my friends! Very insightful and inspiring. Easy read #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved it!! This book really struck me with great understanding on the purpose of sticking to your purpose in life. Cause when we don't you are sure at one point to find apathy. And we know we do not need that. This book is a great read for any age.
Date published: 2017-07-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing short of magical I read this book a couple summers ago, and have read it every summer since. Amazing book. Makes you realize anything you want in this life is achievable. I think of it often.
Date published: 2017-06-27
Rated 4 out of 5 by from this book was good I finished this book, and found the whole story to be touching but also kind of cheesy and a cliché. maybe because of this book, you here these sentiments a lot more these days. I agree that you can realise in hindsight that maybe things were great, and you didn't realise it till it was gone. but at the same time he couldn't of known that without leaving in the first place. never regret the journey of life. its the bulk of what we do on this earth. without that life is pointless. I liked this book, but I say take it with a grain of salt.
Date published: 2017-06-24
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read Great book, couldn't stop after opening the first few pages. Author writing style very unqie

Date published: 2017-06-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! I love this book because it is set in the time of Jesus, but the story is different. I love the wording and how they give you visuals into the story. I am only on the first few pages, and I already cannot put it down!
Date published: 2017-06-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful philosophical must-read! The depth behind Coelho's writing gives me hope with such meaningful aspects about what life really has to offer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read Definitely a story you need to read at a certain age. Some of the imagery can be difficult to grasp but the story line was relatively easy to follow. Reading this after graduating high school, university or as a young adult will change your perspective on life and what it means to pursue your dreams and desires. A lot of lessons to be learned and very important ones.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice book Light reading.. Good for a gift
Date published: 2017-04-10
Rated 2 out of 5 by from No. I cannot understand why this book is seen as so thought-provoking. The message of the book is given to Santiago within the first chapter or so of the book. The rest of the novella is just the repetition of that same moral over and over and over again. I could barely get through it but had to for class.
Date published: 2017-04-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Simple but thought provoking. A simply told story that deals with some important questions.
Date published: 2017-04-07

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Simply Put I found this book to be very simple. Has a lot of lessons in it, and I feel that every person may get something different out of it. I can see why it's taught in high schools. I didn't find it extremely entertaining but I appreciate what it stands for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read, read, read I got this book recommended by Tony Robbins, and I must say, i'm not disjointedness one bit. When you relate this book to your life, you'll see how you can transform, and live a more stress free life. I couldn't imagine owning that many sheep, if any. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! "and, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it" -- beautiful book and so enlightening (also, very easy read!)
Date published: 2017-03-30
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lovely but Lacking I believe that if this book had beautiful writing (like the Timekeeper) I would have rated it the full 5 stars. Perhaps it suffered from a loss during translation as it still read well but it didn't have the aesthetics I like to see in a book like that. It was simplistic, which is nice, but the ending felt rather rushed and pointless to me. The boy (whose name was barely mentioned and I had forgotten until the end) did learn something, but for the reader it wasn't anything we could take with us. The story was really all that you'd get out of this book, but for me even if we didn't get a developed character at the very least the writing should have been better for this kind of project. There isn't much for me to say about the book. The journey was nice (it really was a nice adventure for the imagination), but the boy (he's not even a boy, he's a man) was written way too young. It felt like a coming of age story but he was too old for that (and he sure fell out of love with the girl at the beginning quick, as well as in love with Fatima, but that at least was related to the story). The characters he met were interesting, though, and the way things played out were entertaining. The end wasn't worth it to me, and I felt cheated. I was expecting the treasure to be more than just wealth - although it wasn't that I was tricked to believe otherwise - and the journey just for that felt cheap. He wound up right at the start after having learnt so much just to end up with a girl and some treasure, and for the knowledge he gained it should have been so much more. The story wasn't exactly disappointing, but it could have been better - and for me all it needed was beautiful writing. Because this is a translation I can't fault the author for that, but for the simplistic story with the unfulfilling (for me) ending, it only gets 3 stars from me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lovely But Lacking Disclaimer: I received this book as part of a Goodreads Giveaway. I wasn't quite looking forward to reading this novel once I started it because it involved types of people and lifestyles that I don't enjoy but I stuck with it and still ended up entertained. I don't think it was a great book, but the way the story was told - how Hawley's story progressed alongside his daughter's - was interesting and it kept me flipping pages regardless. I saw another user mention that the violence was a bit gratuitous and unnecessary and I didn't quite agree (expect for the scene with Charlie) until near the end when Hawley was dealing with Nunn. That entire section felt way too glorified and blood - and a bit unnecessary. We are shown very earlier on that Hawley isn't the greatest man, but even something like this was more fit for a mafia style boss and not a small time fry like Hawley (especially after we hear him mention something about a pilot and his girlfriend). Not a lot of things were left "finished", either. I wanted to know what happened with the woman with the black eye and her baby - or even Hawley's father. The worst was the ending where we don't even find out what happens to Hawley or the boyfriend. I wanted a less ambiguous ending and I do believe it could have been achieved satisfactorily with just one more chapter. I do like how the mother's story played in to it and how we can see Hawley's character grow then decay all because of her involvement and death. It is endearing to see how he was attached to Loo, but unfortunately it doesn't seem like his character changed much from him at the start (based on his timeline, not the plot). Even Loo changed, but her father ended up "ruining" things for her and that's another reason why the ending wasn't satisfactory. It is an interesting read, albeit a bit violent, but I wouldn't quite recommend it. The way the two plots ran side by side, and the way Hawley's story was based around the bullets he received, was well done, but it wasn't enjoyable or satisfactory even though the writing was decent and the story was interesting. I didn't feel like I learned anything by the end of it and it's not a story that will be memorable to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sugarcoated Placebo It deals in big, bold pronouncements of 'follow your dreams' et cetera et cetera, and it certainly makes you think about your own life and the pursuit of your own "Personal Legend" if you will.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book, but... A good book, and I can absolutely see why it's a classic. It was so hyped, and many of my friends discussed it, so I ended up reading it (peer pressure). I think if I had picked it up on my own, I would have liked it better. I was expecting so much more. That being said, it was a really good book.

Whether you believe in destiny and fate or not, you have one life and it is yours to live and enjoy. Make the most of your life and become the best person you can be. Do not let your fear or other people’s opinions hold you back from living the way you want to live. Follow your heart and follow your dreams and do not be afraid to have to forge your own path in order to get to where you want to be. P.S. If you have not read The Alchemist yet, I really suggest that you do because it is an amazing book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic so many questions just dawned on me. About life, about the book, etc. This was a very short read, but on every page, there was a philosophical thought or lesson which made it feel like a longer read. However, it did not take the beauty out of it. The author went through many changes in his life which is why I think he had so much material to work with. It is really a book that I cannot describe because the feeling each person get is different depending on his or her input on life, style and experiences. For me, a book like this every once in a while does me a lot of good and teaches me a new way of seeing things.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A classic worth re-reading It has been some 12-15 years since I first read this book, and I had forgotten what it was about. Last night, I decided to re-read it, and this decision was absolutely worthwhile. Reading the book at a later time of my life when I'm going through a rough patch is different from reading it at a time when things were going smoothly. The novel focuses on one message: listen to your heart, as doing so will help you connect to the "Soul of the World"to which we are all connected. By doing so, one can reach their "Personal Legend". Keep post-its handy as you read this book, for you'll want to take note of a few quotable moments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, there is a curious tale on the base level of the novel yet at the same time Paulo provides a larger story and lesson by the time you reach the last page. You are curious to know where the young boy ends up and which life he will choose while at the same time asking yourself which option you would take. It is absolutely amazing and wonderful when you open your eyes to what is in front of you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I have to give it at least one star?! This is an awful book. It sounds all lovely and warm, but really, it's a pseudo-intellectual, pseudo-spiritual smorgasbord that panders to the weakest of minds.
