In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.

“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America's First Daughter

Heather's Review

The Alice Network is a totally engaging story inspired by the real life efforts of a network of spies who worked underground in France during World War I. The narrative alternates between the First World War and the period just following World War 2. It has enough history to fully engage lovers of historical fiction with richly dra...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing This was one of the longest ,dragged out plots I have ever wearily endured. Usually I enjoy war stories about women's invaluable contributions . This was unnecessarily dark and relentless in a plot based on the fixation of revenge. It lacked subtlety with a repetitive "in your face approach "reiterating the pervading evil and darkness with very little happy reprieve or balance. The first book I have read by Kate Quinn and definitely my last. I would be embarrassed to recommend this to friends who are accustomed to much superior writing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Okay Easy/enjoyable read but I didn't find it as amazing as I thought it would be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun Book I really enjoyed this book. I got super into it, and was very intrigued and engaged throughout most of it. I definitely liked the spy stuff more than I liked the romance stuff, but that's just personal preference - I don't read a lot of straight-up romance novels. I especially liked reading the author's notes to find out how much of it was actually based on real life history. I hadn't read any of this author's books before, and just thought that this was a well set fictional story...which it is, but the history behind it is cool and adds to it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Page Turner Great female characters that you fall in love with. The timelines are genius. A book to share and gab about with my mother, aunts, and grandma about.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read My first time reading a Kate Quinn book and I was more than pleasantly surprised. It was an amazing and enjoyable read and at times I found it difficult to put down. The story, mixed with a history of which I was previously unaware, pulled me in and kept me there. I feel Kate truly did a great job in her research and telling of the story. It was an amazing book and I was sorry to see it end. I have shared my like of this book with many others I meet and will keep this one on my bookcase. I would be happy to read more of this type.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute Favourite This is the book you keep on your shelf like a trophy - one you'll read again. I loved the dynamic between Eve and Charlie, and following their journey together. Both characters were absolute firecrackers with an incredible journey I loved to follow right to the very end.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nailed it! Kate Quinn, you nailed it. A very good friend gave me this book for my birthday (after I hinted at wanting to read it)... And what an amazing gift it turned out to be. It was flawless. A story of strong, determined, intelligent, sneaky women - it's a definite must-read for every woman out there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Had me hooked from the first chapter. Picked this up after reading favouring reviews and I was not disappointed. What a interesting read based on truth about a network of female spies in World War I. The author tied together 2 time periods extremely well with well developed and thought-out characters and plot. I couldn't help but root for them and see what twists were coming next.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book! This is a book that you can use for a book club. It would make for great discussion. The main characters are interesting and believable. A great historical fiction about what women went through in war time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marvelous storytelling; excellent detail and historical research. I purchased this because of the author - I'd read her Empress of Rome series and thoroughly enjoyed them. Her characters are vivid and believable; her background research for setting, context and historic accuracy is well done. Her writing is rich and detailed without being slow, and the back-and-forth between the stories of the two main characters kept me up wanting to find out what happens next. The strong characters and the parallel struggles to be true to themselves and build their lives after disaster are compelling. I'm looking forward to the author's next books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivating and riveting! I picked up this book with the feeling that it'd be right up my alley, and it did not disappoint at all. The novel more than lived up to my expectations with strong characters that were very well thought-out and an exciting narrative that had me racing to get to the end. The plot is intricate and brings to light an aspect of history that is often overlooked. A very fulfilling read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved this! Amazing read: women, espionage and war. The author did a great job of toggling between past and present and it all came together nicely at the end. It is definitely a 'book you can't put down!"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Read! This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Good story, full characters with a satisfying ending.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable read! I really enjoyed this book and found I couldn't put it down. It was a little hard to get into at the beginning but started to pick up. I was drawn into the world of Eve during the first world war but didn't connect with Charlie's story much at all. Even though it was meant to take place a couple of years after WW2, it felt too modern and didn't pull me in. Over all, I loved it.
Date published: 2018-03-11
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok read I enjoyed the Alice Network, but didn't find it was as highly addictive as I expected it to be. Still worth the read

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read! I really enjoyed the history in the book, mixed with the characters and the story line. It was so intriguing and eventful, I didn't want to put it down! I would definitely recommend this book :)

Date published: 2018-03-05
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A page-turner I enjoyed the book and it was hard to put down. I took one star off my review for two reasons: (1) Even though the book is set around the two war periods, it's written with a very modern flair. There are some modern-day slangs which I found a bit strange (maybe people did talk that way during that period?) (2) I like the main characters but more could have been said about the other people - they were interesting and I would've liked to know more about them.
Date published: 2018-03-03
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Historical Alice - Great. Post WW 2 Alice - Dreadful! The historical components of this novel were compelling, absorbing and fascinating. If only the author had stuck with that narrative. These sections were well written with fully developed characters that drew you into their lives and experiences. The second story line is awkward and doesn't seem to reflect the time it is trying to portray. The character's language is off - turn of phrase, behaviour, responses, at times overly immature for the period. Something just seems really 'off' resulting in wanting to skim these sections and get back to the more interesting storyline. Unbalanced but worth reading for the history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An deep read with resonance. This book is not a beach read - it's not easy, but it is beautiful. At times, it got so intense that I had to put it down for a few days. But it is definitely worth finishing. Kate Quinn delivers a story of women's work during the Great Wars, without a sugar coating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it I was done reading it in a matter of a few days. Couldn't stop and couldn't get enough. Kate Quinn at her best. Such an easy flowing story, no hiccups, no weird pauses, absolutely wonderful read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling History books don't particularly interest me, but this one was captivating from beginning to end. I loved the story line
Date published: 2018-02-22
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Absorbing Found this to be a really enjoyable and absorbing read. I did find the narrator a bit annoying at times is my only complaint, especially when she would dive into adding things together. As someone with a mathematical mind, that is not how it works.
Date published: 2018-02-21
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good overall historical plotline I had some trouble first getting into the book - but by the end the plot line was great and the two perspectives gives some variance. Nice to see a focus on WWI plotline rather than WWII for a change and adds some nice historical facts into the book as well (based off some true stories).
Date published: 2018-02-21
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I fell in love with Alice. The book is great, well-written and laid out.. but the real star of this story is the true story behind it. It's a piece of history that deserves to be talked about more and I couldn't believe I had never heard of the female spies that worked in WW1.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW This book had me hooked right from the beginning. Was an easy read that would not let me put it down. I loved it for the history of the period. It had me heartbroken at times, engaged, mad and horrified that this actually went on in the world. A must read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brainy suspense plus insight on female spies in WW1&2 I picked this book up as a bit of deviation from my usual suspense/thriller read. I was captivated right away with the story and the characters. I was keen to find out which elements were fact or fiction so I really appreciated the author's notes at the back and was stunned to find out how much was true. The female resistance spies from WW1 & WW2 were incredibly brave and faced terrifying consequences. So not only was this a great read, but I learned something.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just amazing!! It has been a long time since I read something so vivid and heartwarming. This novel really captures your attention and holds it throughout, if I had the time I would read this novel in one sitting. I just loved how each character felt so real and well developed. Ignore the bad reviews because this historical fiction is a better read than Philippa Gregory's novels.

Date published: 2018-01-10
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great to read about women's role as spies during the war I really enjoyed the female character out for revenge, but found the young pregnant Charlie to be an unbelievable character, and the ending a bit too contrived, even for the era the book is based in. That said, it was great to read about women's roles as spies during the war, and their fortitude against the odds.
Date published: 2018-01-09
Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING This is a fantastic book - the storyline is easy to follow and even relate to sometimes, the author uses enough descriptors for the reader to really place him/herself into the story, and ofcourse, it shows what life was like back in those days, which is insightful! #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Page Turner! I bought this book for my mother in law. She read through it in a day and then passed it on for me to read. I have just recently been getting back into reading more but I could not put it down. Tells a wonderful tale of women spies back in the world wars. What incredibly brave women! Would definitely recommend.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overcoming the odds Nice story about overcoming the odds - staying alive in a spy network, success in the search for a lost cousin, and getting rid of an evil man. The part I found least believable was the approach taken by the pregnant Charlie...If not for the "vulgar" aspects other reviews mentioned, I would recommend this to my teenage daughter. Bottom line: engaging enough!
Date published: 2018-01-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great story with an eye to women's history I read this before Christmas and over the holidays. I enjoyed it so much. I found the characters to be believable and heroic while also being flawed. I find saintly female characters to be too cloying, and annoying ones like the main character in The Girl on the Train to be almost unreadable. The women in The Alice Network have neither of those attributes. I could have done without the love story, but it wasn't overly distracting, which was nice. I passed the book on to friends, instead of the recycling box.
Date published: 2018-01-07
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compelling and complex The Nitty-Gritty Trigger warnings for this book include: sexual assault, physical assault, rape, pregnancy, abortion I really enjoyed this book, and I think that it had a lot to do with the pacing. We alternate between two different stories, with two completely different senses of urgency. In 1915 everything feels on edge because we’re in the middle of World War I, behind enemy lines, in the thick of it. In 1947, our deadline is less pressing. The war is over, and although Charlie will have her baby, there’s no immediate threat. By switching back and forth between these two timelines, we get high-stakes action, but it isn’t exhausting. We also get to take a break and ponder what we’ve read. The subject matter is compelling, and the characters provide ample comic relief. A complex narrative featuring complex characters, which makes the depressing content bearable. The descriptions of the violence in the book aren’t explicitly graphic, but enough to turn the stomach. I really appreciated how the sexist and ableist attitudes of certain characters in the book ended up being their downfall – it was a way to keep the attitudes appropriate to the time, yet show how ignorant and damaging those attitudes are. The Verdict The Alice Network is an excellent addition to the canon of World War II/World War I fiction. If you are looking for great, strong, female heroes, look no further.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Informative page turner Learning about the women spy networks in WWI and WWII was at once scary and amazing. What courageous women! The author did a great job of helping us get to know them as women as well as giving us access to what skills they had to have to be spies and how they suffered for their work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A wonderful story of intrigue and loss. A fascinating read about a female British spy and how she survived. Her story is intermingled with that of an American woman who is searching for her cousin in France post WWII. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! This is the best piece of historical fiction I've ever read! I couldn't decide whether I liked Charlie's or Eve's story more and just had to keep reading. The book showed the real sacrifices we make during wartime and I was so heartbroken for all the characters. I'm definitely a Kate Quinn fan now! #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Perfectly Captivating I was hesitant to read this, as I was hearing mixed reviews. I am glad that I went forward with reading it! The writing was the perfect tone for the nature of the book, captivating and suspenseful, yet still easy enough to read during breaks throughout my day. The plot and character development was so intriguing, and even until the end, I was invested in the outcomes of these characters. I found it hard to put down! #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SO GOOD! I loved this book so much, I didn't want it to end. I also love the fact that it's based on true events that actually happened in WWI. Evelyn and Charlie were such good contrasts to each other, and the development of the relationship between them and Finn felt real and extremely believable. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Story! I read this book as part of a book club and I can honestly say that under normal circumstances this would never be a book I would choose to read myself. I'm not all that into history and have never read a book based on the war period in my life. But, I have to say after getting through the first chapter or two I was completely hooked and couldn't put the book down. I was even trying to squeeze in a chapter before heading to work and read the bulk of it within a few days. It was such an amazing combination of suspense that had you on the edge of your seat wondering what would happen next as well as a beautiful story of friendship and women supporting one another. I would definitely recommend this book to history buffs as well as skeptics like myself. It goes to show you truly shouldn't judge a book by it's cover!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fanstastic read Extremely engaging and interesting story of women in espionage. I like the way you get a glimpse of what it was like for women to be working in this profession at this time. I enjoyed the prologue in which the author shares which pieces are fact vs fiction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great story! A great story focusing on female strength. As a fan of historical fiction, I ate this book up. I did wish at times that I could stay in one storyline for more than one chapter at a time (the book follows 2 women during different times, and jumps back and forth), but it was still an extremely enjoyable read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A welcome escape The Network of Alice offers a welcome escape. However, the shift in storylines from 1915 to 1947 can be a bit overwhelming. The characters have strong personalities, Eve and Charlie are certain to become reader favourites – whether they hate them or love them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Read I was hesitant to read yet another novel on World War II, only because I felt I should look to other subjects to broaden my scope. Was I wrong. This covered a part of both World Wars that I had no idea about. Parts were a bit stretched in terms of believability toward the end, but it still worked for me. I loved the terribly unlikeable main character.
