In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the matter where it leads.

“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America's First Daughter

Heather's Review

The Alice Network is a totally engaging story inspired by the real life efforts of a network of spies who worked underground in France during World War I. The narrative alternates between the First World War and the period just following World War 2. It has enough history to fully engage lovers of historical fiction with richly dra...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from War, up close and personal. A brilliant marriage of history and fiction that faithfully portrays the horrors women faced in both great wars. While the main characters are fictitious creations their story is well within the realms of reality. While the ending is vintage Hollywood one is haunted by the cost of that happiness and cannot forget the gnarled and broken fingers of the story's protagonist. If you are looking for similarly entertaining reads you might look at "The Nightingale" and also "A Farewell to France." Both are stories that deal with war and show the sacrifices made by women. Prose created by a brilliant academic that makes for an engaging, entertaining and highly readable story.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Alice; my hero! I absolutely loved this book. One moment I was lost in WW1 with the brave and stubborn Eve, following her adventure as she entered enemy territory as a spy and the next I was in the late 1940’s following Charlie as she searches for her beloved missing cousin. Each time their chapter ended i would think “no, let’s keep going with their story!” Before getting sucked into the next. This book was beautifully written. There were passages (one in particular but I won’t spoil) that were so poetic and descriptive that I could see it as clear as if it were a movie. I was there in that moment, seeing it happen, feeling so much emotion that I felt connected to these characters. If you love historical fiction especially centred around WW1 & 2, strong women and suspense this is the book for you. The women who sacrificed during the war are so often forgotten. And then there is Alice.... Alice is my hero and her story seen through the eyes of both Eve and Charlie will send you on a journey you didn’t expect. Her story is real and Kate Quinn fills in some of the history in the back of the book. She made me laugh and she made me cry and she made me want to research everything I can about her.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Weaves fact and fiction in an engaging way Historical novels based on real people can be tricky, leaning to romanticized legends or fact-heavy narratives. The Alice Network finds a good balance with a story that loops in significant events and characters while still keeping the plot moving in an engaging way.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Women spies This is another book we are reading for our Bookclub this year. I just finished it and found it very absorbing. There a a lot of books being written about the World Wars and this is another one that deserves to be read for the historical setting alone. The network of British women spies contributed to the end of World War I in ways we are only now learning about. It was not a glamorous job and Quinn's writing reflects the cold grittiness of these women's lives. I found it hard to read about the sense of guilt and self-loathing Eve carried with her for so many years and the lack of self confidence Charlie exhibited. They were both depicted as strong, unconventional women but there were great contradictions in their behaviours. And the ending was a little too neat to be believable. The writing is very good. I found the alternating chapters between Eve and Charlie sometimes distracting. At times it seemed Quinn was restricting herself with the format she had chosen for the book. All in all, a great read and very informative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not what I would normally read but SO glad I did! I usually find it hard to keep interest in historical books. However, this one I loved. It was easy to follow with amazing characters and amazing story telling-there was foreshadowing that was extremely subtle and well done and the characters grew and evolved so much throughout the book. You came to love them and root for them! I have never read a book that was so extremely satisfying at the end with everything tied up. Heart and soul and mystery and satisfaction. Definitely recommend.

Very easy to follow and not confusing as some other books written this way can become. I would definitely recommend !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down! The use of a first person narrator made it easy for me to relate to the character. I also really liked how the author wove history into fiction and told the story from two different view points. Not once did I find this book hard to get through (as I sometimes do with other books) and almost lost sleep a few nights just so I could find out what happened next!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Engaging, Enthralling, and Deeply Moving This book definitely lived up to the hype!! I loved all the characters, especially Charlie; it was amazing to follow along with her on her journey and see her grow and develop as a character. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and left me wishing for more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Two wars, one fascinating story The Alice Network is about two different women who happen to cross paths on a journey to seek the past. One story is about the first world war with the protagonist becoming a spy and what was involved with that. The second story is about a woman in search of her cousin who went missing during the second world war. The main story is the search for the cousin but the story of the spy is fascinating. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved This Novel! I thought this was a great novel. I'm always a little apprehensive about novels that have had so much praise written about them because I've read a few really popular and loved books that I thought were terrible. But The Alice Network is such a beautiful story and a page turner, I finished it in two days reading on my breaks at work. I was so transfixed by the stories of the women in this novel, and then to discover that they are based off of real people and many of the events in the books actually happened is so cool. I want to read more about these amazing women! A wonderful story.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting read about important history The first 1/3 of the book dragged a bit but was still interesting. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent Read I was very indecisive over whether or not to read this book. I had heard good things and saw people gush about how great it was. I finally decided to pick it up and read it. Now... Was it a good read? Yes. Was it a great read? No. No without giving away too much, there was one plot line that I really liked, and would have liked more of. Then there was the other plot line that I absolutely dreaded! It was like reading Lord of the Rings all over again, we all skip the Frodo parts and get back to the interesting story. I also found one of the main characters extremely vexing! She was annoying and had no development throughout the book at all. She was very flat to me. Now after all of that being said, it was still an OK book and I learned about a part of history that I hadn't previously. If you are looking for something stellar, this isn't it. If you're looking for a decent book, go ahead and give it a try.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Two Stories In One: One Good and One Bad! What you get with this novel is one very intriguing WWI story about a brave network of women spies. That story is based on a real-life figure in history. However, unfortunately, the novel also features a second story about a young woman eager to find her missing cousin after WWII. This particular story is so weak, trite, sudsy, and frankly, ridiculous and unbelievable that it ruined the goodness of the decent WWI story for me. I felt like I was watching a Hallmark Hall of Fame or Lifetime tacky and fluffy made for tv movie. The connection between the two stories and how it all plays out is absurd as well. One thing that was especially irksome about the WWII story was that the author chose to create a modern dialogue for the main character in this story instead of the appropriate dialogue of that time period and that distracted me from feeling there was any authenticity with respect to that story. I truly don't understand the praise this novel received from critics and readers alike. 2.5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE I could not put this book down! I am just a history nerd, it was so fascinating to hear of women who scarified so much during the war. It was refreshing to have 2 strong female leads and read a historical novel from a difference perspective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A MUST READ What a wonderful book. It was hard to put down. A story of strength, courage, sacrifice and love. A poignant tale of the women who sacrificed so much for the sake of freedom, and the strength of their indomitable spirit that is truly inspiring. I will read this book again for sure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Engaging female-centric war story I love historical fiction, this didn't disappoint! The story did go on for a while, but I found myself turning page after page. I really fell in love with the characters, and loved the interplay between them.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing This was one of the longest ,dragged out plots I have ever wearily endured. Usually I enjoy war stories about women's invaluable contributions . This was unnecessarily dark and relentless in a plot based on the fixation of revenge. It lacked subtlety with a repetitive "in your face approach "reiterating the pervading evil and darkness with very little happy reprieve or balance. The first book I have read by Kate Quinn and definitely my last. I would be embarrassed to recommend this to friends who are accustomed to much superior writing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun Book I really enjoyed this book. I got super into it, and was very intrigued and engaged throughout most of it. I definitely liked the spy stuff more than I liked the romance stuff, but that's just personal preference - I don't read a lot of straight-up romance novels. I especially liked reading the author's notes to find out how much of it was actually based on real life history. I hadn't read any of this author's books before, and just thought that this was a well set fictional story...which it is, but the history behind it is cool and adds to it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read My first time reading a Kate Quinn book and I was more than pleasantly surprised. It was an amazing and enjoyable read and at times I found it difficult to put down. The story, mixed with a history of which I was previously unaware, pulled me in and kept me there. I feel Kate truly did a great job in her research and telling of the story. It was an amazing book and I was sorry to see it end. I have shared my like of this book with many others I meet and will keep this one on my bookcase. I would be happy to read more of this type.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute Favourite This is the book you keep on your shelf like a trophy - one you'll read again. I loved the dynamic between Eve and Charlie, and following their journey together. Both characters were absolute firecrackers with an incredible journey I loved to follow right to the very end.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nailed it! Kate Quinn, you nailed it. A very good friend gave me this book for my birthday (after I hinted at wanting to read it)... And what an amazing gift it turned out to be. It was flawless. A story of strong, determined, intelligent, sneaky women - it's a definite must-read for every woman out there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Had me hooked from the first chapter. Picked this up after reading favouring reviews and I was not disappointed. What a interesting read based on truth about a network of female spies in World War I. The author tied together 2 time periods extremely well with well developed and thought-out characters and plot. I couldn't help but root for them and see what twists were coming next.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marvelous storytelling; excellent detail and historical research. I purchased this because of the author - I'd read her Empress of Rome series and thoroughly enjoyed them. Her characters are vivid and believable; her background research for setting, context and historic accuracy is well done. Her writing is rich and detailed without being slow, and the back-and-forth between the stories of the two main characters kept me up wanting to find out what happens next. The strong characters and the parallel struggles to be true to themselves and build their lives after disaster are compelling. I'm looking forward to the author's next books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivating and riveting! I picked up this book with the feeling that it'd be right up my alley, and it did not disappoint at all. The novel more than lived up to my expectations with strong characters that were very well thought-out and an exciting narrative that had me racing to get to the end. The plot is intricate and brings to light an aspect of history that is often overlooked. A very fulfilling read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable read! I really enjoyed this book and found I couldn't put it down. It was a little hard to get into at the beginning but started to pick up. I was drawn into the world of Eve during the first world war but didn't connect with Charlie's story much at all. Even though it was meant to take place a couple of years after WW2, it felt too modern and didn't pull me in. Over all, I loved it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A page-turner I enjoyed the book and it was hard to put down. I took one star off my review for two reasons: (1) Even though the book is set around the two war periods, it's written with a very modern flair. There are some modern-day slangs which I found a bit strange (maybe people did talk that way during that period?) (2) I like the main characters but more could have been said about the other people - they were interesting and I would've liked to know more about them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Historical Alice - Great. Post WW 2 Alice - Dreadful! The historical components of this novel were compelling, absorbing and fascinating. If only the author had stuck with that narrative. These sections were well written with fully developed characters that drew you into their lives and experiences. The second story line is awkward and doesn't seem to reflect the time it is trying to portray. The character's language is off - turn of phrase, behaviour, responses, at times overly immature for the period. Something just seems really 'off' resulting in wanting to skim these sections and get back to the more interesting storyline. Unbalanced but worth reading for the history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An deep read with resonance. This book is not a beach read - it's not easy, but it is beautiful. At times, it got so intense that I had to put it down for a few days. But it is definitely worth finishing. Kate Quinn delivers a story of women's work during the Great Wars, without a sugar coating.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Absorbing Found this to be a really enjoyable and absorbing read. I did find the narrator a bit annoying at times is my only complaint, especially when she would dive into adding things together. As someone with a mathematical mind, that is not how it works.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good overall historical plotline I had some trouble first getting into the book - but by the end the plot line was great and the two perspectives gives some variance. Nice to see a focus on WWI plotline rather than WWII for a change and adds some nice historical facts into the book as well (based off some true stories).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I fell in love with Alice. The book is great, well-written and laid out.. but the real star of this story is the true story behind it. It's a piece of history that deserves to be talked about more and I couldn't believe I had never heard of the female spies that worked in WW1.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brainy suspense plus insight on female spies in WW1&2 I picked this book up as a bit of deviation from my usual suspense/thriller read. I was captivated right away with the story and the characters. I was keen to find out which elements were fact or fiction so I really appreciated the author's notes at the back and was stunned to find out how much was true. The female resistance spies from WW1 & WW2 were incredibly brave and faced terrifying consequences. So not only was this a great read, but I learned something.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just amazing!! It has been a long time since I read something so vivid and heartwarming. This novel really captures your attention and holds it throughout, if I had the time I would read this novel in one sitting. I just loved how each character felt so real and well developed. Ignore the bad reviews because this historical fiction is a better read than Philippa Gregory's novels.
