This Revised and Expanded Edition contains hundreds of new notes and illustrations.

The first-ever fully annotated edition of one of the most beloved novels in the world is a sheer delight for Jane Austen fans. Here is the complete text of Pride and Prejudice with thousands of annotations on facing pages, including:

 • Explanations of historical context

Rules of etiquette, class differences, the position of women, legal and economic realities, leisure activities, and more.

 • Citations from Austen’s life, letters, and other writings

Parallels between the novel and Austen’s experience are revealed, along with writings that illuminate her beliefs and opinions.

 • Definitions and clarifications

Archaic words, words still in use whose meanings have changed, and obscure passages are explained.

 • Literary comments and analyses

Insightful notes highlight Austen’s artistry and point out the subtle ways she develops her characters and themes.

 • Maps and illustrations

of places and objects mentioned in the novel.

 • An introduction, a bibliography, and a detailed chronology of events

Of course, one can enjoy the novel without knowing the precise definition of a gentleman, or what it signifies that a character drives a coach rather than a hack chaise, or the rules governing social interaction at a ball, but readers of The Annotated Pride and Prejudice will find that these kinds of details add immeasurably to understanding and enjoying the intricate psychological interplay of Austen’s immortal characters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic resource for studying this classic! Studying this novel for a course, I was thrilled to discover the annotated version which opened up Austen's work even more fully. A must have for anyone wanting to go deeper into understanding the culture and behind-the-scenes meanings for unfamiliar phrases and practices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful version! I loved all of the notes that are included with this. In fact I wanted even more! It is a delight to read a novel and have details about history, customs and other background info so easily accessible. Most of the notes are also wonderfully specific, for instance, the significance of Mr. Bingley wearing a blue coat and why it causes a stir upon entry into the neighbourhood! I have read this novel so many times yet reading this version makes it feel like a genuine experience of re-discovery. I wish I had bought a hard cover version, since I have read this one so many times that it is showing wear. And although this version is pretty comprehensive I do hope another update will one day be done to address even more!
