For more than thirty years the Monks of New Skete have been among America's most trusted authorities on dog training, canine behavior, and the animal/human bond.
In their two now-classic bestsellers,How to be Your Dog's Best Friendand THE ART OF RAISING A PUPPY, the Monks draw on their experience as long-time breeders of German shepherds and as trainers of dogs of all breeds to provide--brilliantly distilled--the indispensable information and advice that every dog owner needs.

This new edition of THE ART OF RAISING A PUPPY features new photographs throughout, along with updated chapters on play, crating, adopting dogs from shelters and rescue organizations, raising dogs in an urban environment, and the latest developments in canine health and canine behavioral theory.
As a community, the Monks of New Skete have been breeding, raising, and training dogs for more than 30 years. New Skete Monastery is located in Cambridge, New York.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Wisdom I absolutely devoured this book. Let's be honest, the run-of-the-mill, "how to train your dog" books always have the potential of being boring as all-get-out, or daunting in their approach. This fantastic book is neither. The Monks of New Skete have put their love, their wisdom, and their 40+ years of experience into this book, giving the reader important insight into the minds of our canine companions, from birth onward. If you think this is no more than romantic tripe, think again! It's full of practical advice, from choosing your breed, to puppy temperament testing, to toilet training, schedules (there's even a handy sample schedule!), socializing, body language and far beyond what I have room to expound on here.  Whether you're considering a dog, have a new puppy or rescue, or have been a longtime owner, GIVE THIS BOOK A READ. Not only is it incredibly insightful, but it is approachable and a pleasure to read.
