Memories of other places, travel notebooks chronicle the experience of getting to know each other and ourselves. They have been companions of artists from Durer to Philip Delord, going through the orientalists, those who did the Grand Tour and explorers. The Art of Sketching illustrates the great scientific and journalistic adventures in history, from the Egyptian campaign to the war in Iraq. It also explores more intimate territories capturing and preserving the essence of our world. Rated 1 out of 5 by from Inferior and overpriced compared to other books on this subject I am really disappointed with this book and will be returning it. Way, way WAY overpriced in comparison to what is already available on the subject of art and travel journals. I am a hobby sketcher and keep daily and travel sketchbooks so already have good 'how to' references. I was hoping that this book would contain good pictures of page spreads from famous artists throughout the ages. This book definitely is not that. It contains far more text (in an annoying scratchy thin font). The pictures are are annoyingly small, and I hate the skewed orientation of these on the pages (intended to look like a scrapbook I guess). The second half of the book continues with the same layout, but tries to educate on different types/styles of journal keeping. There are far superior books out there on how to keep an artist journal, travel journal etc. that cost 1/2 to 1/3 the price or less. Look elsewhere. I suggest you start with Danny Gregory's Illustrated Travel and Illustrated Life for inspiration, and Cathy Johnson's Artist Journal Workshop and Artist Sketchbook Workshop for ideas on how to.
