Part two of the literary sci-fi thriller follows a boy and a girl who are caught in a warring town where thoughts can be heard — and secrets are never safe.

Reaching the end of their flight in THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO, Todd and Viola did not find healing and hope in Haven. They found instead their worst enemy, Mayor Prentiss, waiting to welcome them to New Prentisstown. There they are forced into separate lives: Todd to prison, and Viola to a house of healing where her wounds are treated. Soon Viola is swept into the ruthless activities of the Answer, while Todd faces impossible choices when forced to join the mayor’s oppressive new regime. In alternating narratives the two struggle to reconcile their own dubious actions with their deepest beliefs. Torn by confusion and compromise, suspicion and betrayal, can their trust in each other possibly survive?

Customer Reviews of The Ask And The Answer: Chaos Walking: Book Two

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Fantastic! I admit, I had my doubts that Ness would live up to The Knife Of Never Letting Go, but I have to say, he did an absolutely FANTASTIC job of writing book two! In this book we join Todd and Viola again, picking up where we left off: in the hands of the enemy. Except this time we get to see Viola's side of the story, too, as she and Todd are separated and have to learn how to survive in this new world without each others strength, comfort, and support. Throughout this book they each face challenges and difficulties that will test their strength, befiefs, and their faith and loyalty in one another. The writing, like the first, is astounding! I feel like I know each and every character inside out, at least Viola and Todd, and I can picture every scene in my head. The emotions Viola and Todd go through strengthen them, and show readers a side of them you haven't seen before. You can completely connect with them, their feelings so strong they move off the page and into you. You cant help but root for them. I love how we get to see Violas POV. It really shows us more about her personallity and the kind of person she is. This book explores how difficult it is to make decisions, and how just one small choice - just one small word - can make a difference, and, in some cases, can later come back to haunt you. Todd and Viola learn how hard it is to find out where your loyalties lie, and how hard it is to distinguish truth from lie, and lie from truth. There are so many intense moments, especially towards the end of the book. And THAT ENDING!!! I cannot believe Ness left it off where he did! Im so happy I dont have to wait a year for the sequel! But, honestly, this is a sequel you will not want to miss!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My heart breaks for this book. It's a mystery to me as to why this series is not known to many people. It is one of the best book I've read in awhile. Wow. Ness stretches the plot in to its full potential. I experienced rage, sympathy and joy all in this precious blue book. The two main characters contained supreme depth and understanding. The amount of twists and turns in the book drove me crazy and took my breath away. It was just sumptuous to read! I can not wait for the ultimate conclusion, especially after that final 180 degrees turn. Loved it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from such a fantastic series Oh, Todd. Oh, Viola. You’re breaking my heart. Patrick Ness has done it again with the second book in his Chaos Walking trilogy. When we left Todd and Viola in The Knife of Never Letting Go, they were running for their lives into the town of Haven. Well, Todd was running at least; Viola had been shot. Haven turns out to be exactly the opposite; the pair are captured and separated. When Todd comes to, he is tied to a chair and the Mayor (remember how evil he was in the last book? You ain’t seen nothing yet!) is interrogating him. But all Todd can think about is Viola. “Where is she?” I spit into the dark, tasting blood, my voice croaking, my Noise rising like a sudden hurricane, high and red and furious. “WHERE IS SHE?” “I will the one doing the asking here, Todd. That voice. The opening scene in The Ask and the Answer is but a taste of the horrors to come. Ness doesn’t pull any punches: literally. Haven has been taken by the Mayor and his men and Todd finds himself separated from Viola. No one is safe and the lines between who is good and who is not are constantly shifting. The Ask and the Answer is about war. The themes are universal: outsiders rounded up like cattle and branded; a leader crazy for power (or perhaps just plain crazy), and two kids trying desperately to make meaning and find a way to do the least damage. So much comes at them and I often forgot that they were just kids. That was the hardest thing to believe about the whole book: Todd is supposed to have just turned 13 and he seems a lifetime older. But I am looking at him from my cushy, never-been-in-war, perspective. Who knows what you might be capable of if there was no alternative. And that question is at the very center of Ness’ terrific book. If you had no choice – what would you do? If you thought all was lost – what would you do? People constantly surprised me in this book, particularly the Mayor’s son, Davy. It’s a testimony to Ness’ considerable talent that he is able to make Davy sympathetic. As for Todd and Viola – they continue to be resourceful and bloody amazing and true to each other is ways that are both heart-breaking and inspiring. They’re so brave and so resilient, I hated to leave them again. Book three, coming up: Monsters of Men

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even Better Than The First! I went into this novel a little unsure--could it be better than the first? What was going to happen? Upon finishing, however, I was completely blown away. It wasn't as good as the first--it was better! And I'm honestly so glad that the third book has already been published because I don't think I could wait another day to get my hands on it! I don't want to give too much away, so I'll keep this brief. I loved how we got to hear things from Viola's point of view, and I loved how there was no good or bad--half the time I didn't know whose side to be on. It was a lot easier getting into this one because I was already used to the style from the first. I'll also say that one particular death in this novel was just as sad (if not more sad!) than that death in the first.... CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! After reading the first book in the series I immediately had to go and get the other two books in order to find out what happens. The characters in this novel are among the most complex that I have come across in a YA novel in a very long time, by equal measures heroic and dispicable. My brain is still buzzing and I have already moved onto the third book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! Wow, just wow. I didn't think it could get any better but I was definitely wrong. Watching both Viola and Todd grow up is believable and heartbreaking. Their relationship is tested in every way 'everyone' can throw at them. New friends are made out of the dust you'd never think they'd come from as the war crumbles around them. Todd and Viola are forced to make difficult choices while people fall left and right around them. They can't trust anyone but each other - then even that is pushed to the limits others may have broken. Being separated never felt so much more like being together. Two people, fighting, hurting, suffering, crying, screaming, and it's all for the other. loyalty was never the most bittersweet thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So..Totally, Absolutley, Insanely...Amazing!!!! Wow.....WOW!!!....this book was freakin amazing, ***Before you read this review go read the first one, The Knife Of Never Letting Go, I don't want to give anything away:)*** Todd and Viola have finally reached Haven...But are greeted with Mayor Prentiss, who takes Viola away from Todd. Now, Todd is under the Mayor's orders, or so called President, because if he doesn't, he could risk Viola's life... Viola is on the other side of town, with the women. She suffers from a gun shot wound, and is being healed by the Mistresses of New Prentisstown. These Mistresses gain Viola's trust, but as the story continues she is betrayed. Viola has no choice but to join them, in The Answer, a group of people against President Prentiss, who plant bombs all over town, to start a war. Viola is now apart of the Answer, hoping to destroy President Prentiss and save Todd, But when the President fights back in the war, he starts the Ask, and Todd has no choice but to join him. Now, Viola and Todd are seperated on both sides of the war, in this action packed, thrilling sequel the Ask and the Answer battle it out, Todd and Viola will do anything to save friends are made, new enemies are formed and the noise gets stronger than ever.. I absolutley loved this sequel, the suspense kills you at times, and leaves you grasping this book until no end. This time, Patrick Ness has the points of view from Todd and Viola, switiching back and forth, so we could see what they are both doing, and feeling..You get so attached to these characters, it's as if you would do anything to save them. You can feel Viola's and Todd's hope, betrayal, and all of their feelings, as if your living through it with them. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing! **Spoilers if you have yet to read the first book. Which is even better than The Ask and the Answer, so go read it!!** Todd and Viola’s adventures continue in this action-packed sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go. The two have finally made it to Haven, but a dark surprise greets them there. Mayor Prentiss has arrived before them and has taken Viola away from Todd. Not knowing where she is, Todd obeys all of the Mayor’s, or now called President’s, orders to keep him from hurting Viola. On the other side of town, Viola heals from her gun wound and meets the Mistresses of New Prentisstown. She makes some new friends, but is betrayed in the most brutal ways. But she joins them in hope of overthrowing President Prentiss and escaping with Todd. Viola joins the Answer, an army of terrorists who plot bombs around the town to start a war with the President. Todd, feeling betrayed and lost, joins the President’s side of the Ask, where he must find the Answer and kill them. The story is told from both points of views, switching between Todd and Viola’s minds so we can feel their emotions and learn their thoughts. We feel their betrayals, broken hearts, jealousy, and the rare moments of happiness they have. Some new characters are introduced, but all the old ones are present, and we go more in depth with them and learn more about their thoughts and feelings. Some--who we thought we would hate forever--open up themselves in this book and you can’t help but feel sorry for their past. Patrick Ness is an amazing author who plays with your emotions and thoughts, making you feel like you’re the one being betrayed, you’re the one in the middle of a war, you’re the one being attacked, and you’re the one running for your life. It’s so…overwhelming. I absolutely love this book! This series is amazing, and I cannot wait for the third and final book to be released next year: Monsters of Men.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Highly Imaginative with lots of action. I enjoyed this book almost as much as the first in the trilogy. My only criticism would be that the fight scenes tended to drag on a little longer than I would have liked. But a wildly, imaginative story that keeps the reader enthralled. I can't wait for the thrid book to see how the Alien Spackle will factor in.
