We waited somewhat impatiently for the frost to break up, and the snow to disappear, and the passage over the Tyrolean mountains into Italy to be pronounced open, for, though our winter sojourn at Munich had been highly interesting, several of our party had suffered so much from serious illness that we were anxious to get into a warmer region and breathe a more balmy air. Accordingly, our three horses were brought into good travelling condition, the carriage was packed, leave was taken at Court, we bade adieu to our many friends, German and English, and on March 29th, at an early hour, we trotted merrily away for Wolfrathshausen and Benedictbeuern, on our route to Innsbruck. Here we were already amongst the mountains and lakes, the pretty little Kochel-See, and the wilder and more picturesque Walchen-See, between which the hill was so long and so steep that we found it advisable to hire four horses to drag our carriage to the top, while our own horses followed behind. It was on the third day after leaving Munich that we halted for an hour or two at the little village of Seefeld, and by chance wandered into the church, where we found a long story written on the walls, in German, French, Italian, English, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and half a score other languages. On consulting the English version (which was presented to us in such strange sentences as to be, in some places, quite unintelligible but for the assistance of the French and German versions hard by) we found that it was an account of a wondrous miracle which had taken place here some generations ago.
