The Best Laid Schemes is a crime thriller based in Ireland and Spain with intricate twists and turns happening continuously throughout the plot. The book is written in a flowing idiomatic Irish style.

The story begins late at night at the head of the pier in Spiddal a small town some ten miles west of Galway city in Ireland. Michael O’Malley, having spent some time with a beautiful young woman, has walked with her to her house. He is one half of an all but defunct marriage. Having returned to his parked car he becomes aware of a man and a woman, quarreling violently with each other. The man lashes out at the woman who falls backwards, her head colliding with the spur of an old sea anchor. She lies still on the ground and despite efforts on the man’s behalf to revive her she does not recover. Michael stands dumbfounded as the man lifts her into a four wheel drive and drives away. Because of his earlier romantic experience he finds himself unable to intervene and so begins a story of naivety, innocence, greed, intrigue, criminality and murder.
Amid all of this, new love struggles to assert itself while surrounded by characters and circumstances that threaten its existence. There are many twists and turns as the numerous threads of the story are revealed. Seemingly unrelated events in the south of England, the Costa Del Sol in Spain, and in Dublin are woven into a tale that excites the imagination and makes it extremely difficult to put down.
