This book was never completed. In a MS. note inserted in a copy presented to the late Dr. W. H. Egle, Judge Veech writes: "It was written and printed in 1857, hurriedly and with limited materials, (but) the discovery of errors and defects and the death of Mr. Lewis induced a suspension of the work, which has never been resumed, and a suppression of what has been printed. But some friends wishing to have them, I have allowed some copies to go out." This copy has the title written in Judge Veech's handwriting as he intended it to appear, as follows: "The Monongahela of Old; or, History of Fayette County, Pa. By Freeman Lewis and James Veech. Pittsburg, 1860." Another title of a copy sold at sale of Dr. Egle's books is: "Veech, James. The Monongahela of Old; or. Historical Sketches of Southwestern Pennsylvania to the Year 1800. Pittsburg: Printed for Private Distribution only. 1860." Some copies have 240 pages; others, by the addition of Judge Veech's article on Mason and Dixon's Line, make the number of pages greater.
