about

The average child can identify over 300 corporate logos, but only 10 native plants or animals—a telling indictment of our modern disconnection from nature. Soaring levels of obesity, high rates of ADHD, feelings of stress and social awkwardness and "Nature Deficit Disorder" are further unintended consequences of a childhood spent primarily indoors.

The Big Book of Nature Activities is a comprehensive guide for parents and educators to help youth of all ages explore, appreciate and connect with the natural world. This rich, fully illustrated compendium features:

  • Nature-based skills and activities such as species identification, photography, journaling and the judicious use of digital technology
  • Ideas, games and activities grounded in what's happening in nature each season
  • Core concepts that promote environmental literacy, such as climate change and the mechanisms and wonder of evolution, explained using a child-friendly, engaging approach
  • Lists of key species and happenings to observe throughout the year across most of North America.

Perfect for families, educators, and youth leaders, The Big Book of Nature Activities is packed with crafts, stories, information and inspiration to make outdoor learning fun!

Jacob Rodenburg is the Executive Director of Camp Kawartha, an award winning summer camp and outdoor education centre which uses music, drama, hands-on exploration, games and activities to inspire awe and wonder for the local environment. He teaches part time at Trent University, where he spearheaded the development of an "Eco Mentor"...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Inspiring and Necessary Resource Looking back as a retired educator it seemed we were getting it right in the 90's when schools were racing to be "Green" and Litterless Lunches were the norm. However, most of those goals are no longer an integral part of our children's education. As our world becomes more urban and more connected to the digital world, research shows that there is clearly becoming a wider gap between children and the natural world. So, for these reasons alone The Big Book of Nature Activities is a crucial and inspiring resource for all who share the earth with a child. Teachers, parents, grandparents,caregivers...buy this book and continue or begin to connect those you love with the wonderful natural world. This book is chock full of easy to do, fun, practical activities and well researched information that will really make you want to get out and enjoy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a must-have book for ALL Canadians ! Especially in this 150th 'birthday' year for our great nation, this is one of those books that draws together in one place, many lifetimes' worth of fabulous things that people have learned-done-dreamed of- or talked about for many many decades. And even before we became 'Canada', the indigenous people were doing many of these types of nature-contact things - in the course of their daily lives and survival tactics! Being sufficiently 'in-touch' with nature is so fundamental to we humans, regardless of when or where we are on this blue planet! But in our cyber-frenzied urban-dominated lives these days, it is all too easy to forget to stay 'in-touch'. We get sicker and sadder and more stressed when we don't, that is very well known. Drew Monkman in this book provides the very best compendium I've ever come across, of a very diverse array of 'nature-contact' activities that people can do, and suited to people of all ages and not just children - and so help themselves and those around them, keep 'in-touch' with the natural world. Of course ultimately we all depend on that natural world - including our own species! Can't do much more than say I love this book, and truly hope that tens-hundreds of thousands of Canadian homes have a copy at hand - ideally right beside the electronic device! Stay healthy everyone :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the resource I've been waiting for! As an elementary teacher, The Big Book of Nature Activities is the text I have been waiting for. Organized around the changing seasons and the six main geographical regions of North America, the book is loaded with descriptions of key natural events, activities to help you enjoy and explore, the background science to help you make sense of what you observe, numerous links to a variety of citizen science projects, and it leaves you rushing to get outside again. This book is a wonderful resource for parents and care-givers wanting ideas and activities to help connect children and adults alike, back to the natural environment. Many, many thanks to the authors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A world of wonders just steps away. The Big Book of Nature Activities holds many wonders between its covers and on its large pages. Oh, how I wish my parents had a copy when I was a child. The activities are inviting and as I sit in my chair at home, I long to do them myself. There seems hardy a tropic authors Monkman and Rodenburg have not explored from birds to butterflies, stars to snowflakes. The book is organized on the seasons with activities appropriate to each and always with a deeper theme of adaption by natural selection and a profound respect for the natural world and all its astonishments. This book says take yourself, take you children, take the ones you love into the field and the forest and appreciate as Darwin said in the last paragraph of On the Origin of Species “endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful." Highly recommended.
