Rated 5 out of 5 by from I recommend this book to EVERYONE I really do recommend this book to everyone. It has everything you or your partner may want to know about labor and delivery. Penny Simkin is an amazing woman and author. Don't waste your money on the "what to expect" line of books, instead buy this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Intelligent book I'm an MD and bought this for my non-medical partner to read before accompanying my labour. Couldn't recommend highly enough. It is so hard to find intelligent and accurate books on pregnancy, labour and parenting, which really makes this book stand out from the pack. I really like that it really recognizes that not all labours and not all women are the same and prepares the birth partner for a range of scenarios and situations that they may face. I also appreciate that it uses accurate language, (e.g. the baby is in the uterus, not the belly) and is not written in fluffy, vague language that hides the realities of childbirth.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book Great book for pregnant people and their families, doulas, labour support companions, and even for a beginning midwifery student to get a good overview of the labour and birth process, and how to support your client through it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read I think this book is slightly more helpful for someone at more of a professional level but is certainly still helpful for fathers or other partners just the same. Providing helpful information and ways to see what the mother is experiencing and how to help her. There are checklists and ways to remind the father/partner to look after himself as well. Very helpful for someone experiencing things from the other side.

PRAISE for THE BIRTH PARTNER “Penny Simkin shows how giving support in childbirth is not only a matter of helping a woman through labor and delivery—important though that is—but also of enabling her to cherish a meaningful memory of birth.” – Sheila Kitzinger, author of Rediscovering Birth and The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth “A clearly written book that describes what really happens in our maternity units. I recommend it highly for both parents and a supportive friend.” – Marshall Klaus, M.D., author of Bonding, Your Amazing Newborn and Mothering the Mother
