about

The first book of the triumphant and epic four-part conclusion to the Shannara series, from one of the all-time masters of fantasy.

Across the Four Lands, peace has reigned for generations. But now, in the far north, an unknown enemy is massing. More troubling than the carnage is the strange and wondrous power wielded by the attackers—a breed of magic unfamiliar even to the Druid order. Fearing the worst, the High Druid dispatches a diplomatic party under the protection of the order’s sworn guardian, Dar Leah, to confront the mysterious, encroaching force and discover its purpose.

But another crucial journey is being undertaken. Exiled onetime High Druid Drisker Arc has been living in quiet seclusion, far from the politics and power struggles of his former life, until two brutal attacks by would-be assassins force him to seek out an infamous murder-for-hire guild—and find the hidden enemy who has marked him for death. At his side is Tarsha Kaynin, a young woman gifted with the wishsong and eager to be schooled in its formidable power by a master. She, too, is pursuing a mission: to locate her wayward brother, whose own magic has driven him to deadly madness and kindled his rage for vengeance . . . against his sister.

In their darkest hours, facing dangerous adversaries, the lives and quests of Dar Leah, Drisker Arc, and Tarsha Kaynin will be inextricably drawn together. And the challenges each confronts will have resounding consequences for the future of the Four Lands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Exciting Epic Fantasy! In the Black Elfstone” the first in “The Fall of Shannara” trilogy, Terry Brooks brings to life another epic fantasy that begins with a contract with the Orsis Guild to murder the exiled High Druid of Paranor and a mysterious army that’s infecting the peace of the Four Lands starting with the slaughter of two tribes of trolls. In an atmosphere of peril and uncertainty as deception and treachery brews in the halls of Paranor, the exiled High Druid Drisker Arc; his apprentice Tasha Kagnin who’s being trained to control the power of her magic; and the former Blade Dracon Leah struggle to uncover the truth behind the danger that threatens the land and the Druids’ Keep. Fast-paced and action-packed, skilfully Terry Brooks intertwines subplots like Tasha Kagnin’s struggle to harness the power of her wishsong so she can save her mad brother, and the political degeneration of Paranor under Ober Balronen’s rule, into the main story as an invading army with a strange, new magic threatens the Four Lands with death and destruction. Intensity and suspense quickly escalate when Paranor’s negotiation team faces a deadly clash with the white-cloaked leader of the invading army; Driskar and Tasha after two failed assassination attempts go to Varfleet to uncover the identity of the enemy who’s marked him for death; and Tasha’s mad brother begins his reign of terror as he searches for his sister. Blending twists and surprising mysteries like a young boy in Varfleet called Shea Ohmsford and a strange prophecy that awaits Tarsha, the story is a page-turner from beginning to end. Well-developed and intriguing as events unfold the plot progresses quickly and smoothly to a shocking cliff-hanger that promises a thrilling sequel. Included among a cast of complex and unforgettable characters that bring power, excitement and depth to the story are the tall, talented, skilled and experienced magic user Driskar Arc an outcast who has an ordered and ethical nature but can quickly change becoming dark, headstrong and ruthless; tough, resilient and smart teen Tarsha Kagnin; the direct, impatient but astute Darcon Leah; as well as the unpredictable, reckless and mad Tavo Kagnin. I thoroughly enjoyed “The Black Elfstone” and can’t wait to see where Terry Brooks will take this entertaining story next
