about

A woman has vanished while digging a dinosaur bone bed in the remote wilderness of Canada. Somehow, the only evidence has made its way to the inbox of Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta, over two thousand miles away in Boston. She has no idea why.

But as events unfold with alarming speed, Scarpetta begins to suspect that the paleontologist’s disappearance is connected to a series of crimes much closer to home: a gruesome murder, inexplicable tortures, and trace evidence from the last living creatures of the dinosaur age.

When she turns to those around her, Scarpetta finds that the danger and suspicion have penetrated even her closest circles. Her niece Lucy speaks in riddles. Her lead investigator, Pete Marino, and FBI forensic psychologist and husband, Benton Wesley, have secrets of their own. Feeling alone and betrayed, Scarpetta is tempted by someone from her past as she tracks a killer both cunning and cruel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very Deceiving Title and Synopsis First book I've read from the Scarpetta series. I enjoyed the book but I'm not sure if I'll read any others from the series. It was a very well written book and very descriptive. I found it quite slow and the ending was uneventful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Deceiving Title This was my first Patricia Cornwall novel and first Kay Scarpetta story so I won't be too negative because I can't compare it to any other Scarpetta story by Cornwall. However, the title and back cover gave me the impression the story would revolve around solving a case in Alberta's dino beds. It was not and for that reason I'm disappointed and give 4/5 stars. I was looking forward to dinosaurs being mingled in. Dinosaurs weren't even mentioned! Overall, it was still a good story and fairly intriguing throughout.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The Bone Bed I'm noticing that Patricia's books are beginning to follow a pattern concerning her characters. For one they never seem to be happy and another someone is always out to get one of them. This book follows that path.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Bone Bed It just absolutely amazes me all the different stories and ways of murder that Patricia Cornwell always conjures up. Another excellent addition to the Scarpetta series. There is no other crime writer today as compelling as Patricia Cornwell.

Editorial Reviews

“The tight plot keeps a local focus, the disconnected deaths are neatly tied together…and there are plenty of stomach-churning autopsies performed with cutting-edge equipment.”—The New York Times Book Review “An ingenious murder method, more hours in the mortuary and forensics lab than usual, an uncharacteristically muffled killer, and all the trademark battles among the regulars and every potential ally who gets in their way.”—Kirkus Reviews “The story is nail-bitingly violent and suspenseful, and it highlights Scarpetta’s signature survival instinct, brilliant logic and attention to personal relationships.”—The City Paper (Nashville, TN)
