Reviews

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ghost stories that should have been a novel Kyle Murchison Booth is a shy museum archivist who knows a lot about dark magic. In this series of linked short stories we see Booth confronted with all kinds of Gothic standbys: bodies bricked in walls, incubi, and of course ghosts. I had read one of these stories where it was originally published and it did nothing for me as a stand-alone: the horror aspect was too familiar, there was none of the tension between skepticism and the supernatural that is often used to good effect in such stories, and Booth's character, being diffident and tongue-tied, did not emerge too clearly. The same story in this context was more enjoyable though--each tale tells us another tidbit about Booth and his interesting past. That said, the project as a whole was still less satisfying than a novel might have been. Monette's strengths, displayed in her other books, are character and voice--here, with the short-story structure limiting the character exploration, and Booth being so self-effacing, the work did not shine. Yet it was enough of a teaser that I would definitely pick up a novel on the same character.
