about

Based on the award-winning 10-million-plus-hit blog 1000awesomethings.com, The Book of Awesome is a high five for humanity and a big celebration of life's little moments:

• Popping Bubble Wrap
• Wearing underwear just out of the dryer
• Fixing electronics by smacking them
• Getting called up to the dinner buffet first at a wedding
• Watching The Price Is Right when you're home sick
• Hitting a bunch of green lights in a row
• Waking up and realizing it's Saturday

Sometimes it's easy to forget the things that make us smile. With a 24/7 news cycle reporting that the polar ice caps are melting, hurricanes are swirling in the seas, wars are heating up around the world, and the job market is in a deep freeze, it's tempting to feel that the world is falling apart. But awesome things are all around us-sometimes we just need someone to point them out.

The Book of Awesome reminds us that the best things in life are free (yes, your grandma was right). With laugh-out-loud observations from award- winning comedy writer Neil Pasricha, The Book of Awesome is filled with smile-inducing moments on every page that make you feel like a kid looking at the world for the first time. Read it and you'll remember all the things there are to feel good about.

The Book of Awesome reminds us of all the little things that we often overlook but that make us smile. With touching, warm, and funny observations, each entry ends with the big booming feeling you'll get when you read through them: AWESOME!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this book Playful, light-hearted reading but with a great message. Easy to pick up and just read a few pages at a time. Great for anyone looking for a little pick me up now and again. A co-worker gifted me this book when my mom was in hospital after a heart attack and awaiting bypass surgery, I read it while sitting in waiting rooms - it lifted my spirits during a stressful time and I still come back to it on my bookshelf every so often.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! Such an amazing and inspirational book. The book is written in a way that each "story" is separated with a funny title. Some entries are really short but no less enjoyable then the ones that are 2 pages long. This was a book my teacher in high school read to us one passage a day and it made us look forward to coming to class just to hear the awesome story for the day! I greatly recommend as a parent, teacher, or even for yourself. I love it

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great gift! I received this as a high school graduation gift with "The Book Of (even More) Awesome" and absolutely loved it. I'd agree with some of the other reviews that it's not quite what I thought it would be - but I do still find this quite enjoyable. It made me think of the little things you appreciate in life so I found it to be a great read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool idea Cool book idea, but I found that it was a bit repetitive to read by the end. Very good to read over the course of a long time...reading a few sections each week.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light & Funny I loved the blog that this is based on for a long time before buying the book, but I don't regret it at all! It's a great book for a little light conversation and I keep it out on the coffee table. Each little piece is relatively short (a couple pages max). Definitely something to have in your collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feel good, easy read This is one of those books that makes you smile with every page turn. It's not a thinker or a heavy read but just something to remind you of the little awesome moments in everyday life you forget about sometimes. It's about remembering the joy of jumping on a pile of crunchy leaves or finding the cool spot on a pillow on a hot night. It's great if you need a reminder of life's little pleasures. It's a fun, easy read. Great stocking stuffer book or add on to a gift.
Date published: 2017-01-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't Take It Seriously The book is meant to be taken with a grain of salt. It's about enjoying life's little pleasures.
Date published: 2017-01-26
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh I thought that the writing was a bit condescending, and that the events he described as 'awesome' were more average than anything.
Date published: 2017-01-18
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Moments of 'Awesome' The author examines aspects of everyday life that he thinks are 'awesome' and seems to encourage people to find the joy in small things. However, I find the writing of it pretty condescending and I didn't think that a number of the stories told referred to anything remarkable or things that should be referred to as 'awesome'.
Date published: 2017-01-18
Rated 4 out of 5 by from This book is great! The book of awesome is exactly what it the title says. A collection of all of life's moments that are truly amazing. it really makes you reflect and appreciate the little things
Date published: 2017-01-15
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good book It is a good book. Makes you think about how great life is, and how much that we have that we don't appreciate. The author isn't that great though....I mean, he has a website and encourages people to get on it, but then he has no communication with them whatsoever. I've read other books and spoken to other authors of other books........they were at least nice and took the time to speak to me

Date published: 2017-01-08
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Something good for everyday life. First thing you need to know about this book is that it is not a novel or advice book. My sister gave me this book as a gift when I was going through a tough time. What I did every morning is open it and read one or more pages which contained every day things that are wonderful. Things like people smiling, someone holding a door for you, or your favourite song being played on the radio. Each story had a bit of a background to what it is amazing (either the author or a short tale from someone who told him what happened). It helped me see the brighter side of life.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Pick-Me-Up "The Book of Awesome" is a quick read and good pick me up on the days you are feeling down. I'll note that the entire time I was reading this I was thinking to myself "Oh, this would be a great book to leave in the bathroom". Not sure why I feel this way, but it has found its way into my bathroom. I suppose because the "chapters" are quick and it just makes sense. I will say that the way the author wrote kind of annoyed me at times. I didn't understand the need to write "AWESOME" at the end of every segment but it fits with the authors writing style. The last chapter of the book really redeemed the whole thing for me. It was so full of heart and soul and it wrapped everything up together nicely.
Date published: 2016-12-08
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book Helps with your outlook on life. Sometimes this book will seem like a pity party, but enjoy those little things in life because it's all about the perception of how you interpret the situation, and not about the situation itself. Great positive book !

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Uplifting The author has a very optimistic attitude. I like flipping through the book, but its format does not really lend well to actually sitting down for a read. That being said, it's nice to have around to pick up when you want to be reminded of something awesome in the world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book lives up to its title Every single entry in this book put a smile on my face. This book is truly living up to its expectation of being 100% awesome! I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions, and I recommend this feel-good novel to all! Each story gives you a flash back to the exact time you first played with bubble wrap or jumped into bed with a fresh, clean pair of sheet on. These stories remind you to stop rushing through life and to slow down and enjoy the little things, because that is what really counts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A wonderful pick-me-up book I really, really liked this book. So many times I would read a chapter and say, ‘YES!! That IS awesome!’ Such a fun, light-hearted book written by Neil Pasricha, The Book of Awesome is a book I will definitely want to share with everyone who’s looking for a pick-me-up. My personal favourites: The smell of gasoline (weirdly enough), the smell of rain on hot pavement, the smell of bakeries (I’m noticing a trend here), the other side of the pillow, and so much more. The great thing is that this book teaches you how to appreciate the little things in life and also to appreciate your own life and how great it is that we’re able to be here on this Earth – it’s just, well, awesome! A great, great read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inspiring! When I first got this book I thought it was just going to be an amusing read, but when I started to actually read it and was actually very good! Reading it after a long day helps you realise the little things in life that we take for granted. The book is all about the small things in life that we should really stop and think about. Sometimes its hard to look at the small things in life that makes us smile. After reading this book it really made me start thinking about those small things throughout the day that makes life a little more fun. I would recommend this to anyone at any age. It is a very fun read, and it brings fun into your daily busy life!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Reminds You of the Little Things in Life I didn't find myself reading this book everyday like I would with another one. The Book of Awesome is comforting when you simply need some time to relax and remind yourself of the things in life you normally wouldn't notice. It's not a book you read front to back in one sitting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible, so amazing! The book of Awesome is exactly that, awesome! It reminds us that it's the little things in life that bring us true happiness. This book appeals to everyone because at some point all of us have had those moments where we are just in awe of something so simple and yet it is still awesome! It reminds us not to take anything for granted and to take pleasure in all the little things that make this world what it is, AWESOME!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheery! Such a nice, light book. Do you know what's awesome? Coming home from work, tired, you lounge around the couch with a nice blanket wrapped around you drinking some hot chocolate while reading The Book of Awesome. Neil is such an optimist, it's an easy book to connect to, so you can have an awkward moment reading something and saying 'I DO THAT ALL THE TIME, IT IS AWESOME!' Anybody can read it, age, gender, book preference, it's just the perfect book for everyone!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Was okay Decided to read this book after hearing so much about it and much praise. Feel like such a downer giving only two but unfortunately I did not wow me. Some of the "awesomes" were that indeed but found many just okay and the writing to be desired. Was a worthwhile purchase but I think I just had higher expectations for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smile Inducing Such a simple book. Pasricha take the little things in life that we all share, like the smell of the coffee aisle or freshly cut grass, using q-tips to massage in your ear, or popping bubble wrap. He goes into a description of the thing, and honestly makes you remember things from your childhood that make you smile. It's a cute, optimistic look at life. Easy to read in little snippets, because each awesome thing stands alone.
Date published: 2011-04-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME This book really is awesome. I laugh out loud but can't explain the stories to my friends as well as Neil does, so i am just going to have to buy a few copies to share.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hilarious read! A book of the little things that make life great. The saying holds true for this one... it's funny - because it's true.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun Read I really enjoyed this book. It's a fun light-hearted read and entertaining. And the best part is that pretty much anyone can pick up this book and find so many "awesome" moments that are true for them. Which makes it even more enjoyable to read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Uplifting, and light fun. This book is just a little bit of fun fluff. A book that will just get you in a good mood thinking of all the good things in life rather than the downside of life that we are bombarded with everyday. Some of the awesome points in life that that author picked I agreed with and others I did not. I found that the book did stay with me as I tried to find little moments of awesome all day long, and when you think about life on the positive…..there is quite a lot to be thankful for. If you think that this book is going to be in-depth or really deep, it’s not, just some fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone in my house loves this book! It is very rare to find a book that everyone will enjoy. Well, this is it! My family absolutely loves this book. I haven't finished it yet because it is constantly being shared among all of us in the house. I would agree with a previous post that this is definitely a conversation starter. I actually started to talk about this book at work and so many of my co-workers asked me to bring it in. We shared some good laughs at lunch talking about the different things that Neil Pasricha has rated as 'awesome'. I would recommend this book to anyone. Any book that makes you laugh out loud is excellent in my mind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down! This book was amazing! Usually I'm not much of a reader, but I flew through this book in two days. It was simple to pick up and read whenever I wanted. Rated 2 out of 5 by from Browse Before you Buy I bought this book without really browsing it first and I was disappointed. I didn't realize that it was simply a list and description of things that the author thinks is "awesome". If I had known I would not have spent my money on it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would make an awesome Christmas gift! The great thing about "The Book of Awesome" is that you can pick it up and read from wherever you left off, or from wherever you feel like starting today. It is full of insights into every day life that we all experience. Neil Pasricha's ability to put these feelings into words makes anyone feel as if he's writing about their lives. I bought several of these to give as gifts this holiday season, and so far every one I've given away has been received warmly and with the same excitement that I felt the first time I read it. This really is an awesome book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Gift Recently, I received this book as a gift & I truly Love it. It is a great coffee table and commute to work book. It is not the fiction needing to rush to the finish line. Just when I need a chuckle or a pick-me-up, I open any random page & find something to be happy about. It makes me more aware of so many good things around us.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's a list, not a novel. Get that first, then enjoy... My top 3: Leftover office cake, someone else's tv remote, & rock paper scissors. Everyone picks a different top 3 out of the book. It doesn't read cover to cover like a novel, since it's a compiled list of stuff that happens in Pasricha's life. As you browse until an item catches your eye that you can relate to, don't skip the second last item. That tribute on page 378 is where I found new respect for Pasricha as a writer. There was such heartfelt sincerity in his words, and being near the end of the book, it added that necessary depth of meaning for all the levity that led up to that point .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely my new favourite book/positivity source and life guide! The Book of Awesome is a light-hearted smile generator and I found myself giggling out loud (on public transit) reading it! However, within its pages is a secret - the secret is that it will make you a happier person - at least for me it did. It helped me change my perspective for the better. I now keep a journal of AWESOME, where I keep a record of all the little things that happen in my life, and when you do this, instead of dwelling on the negative things that undoubtedly happen in a day, I am on a conscious scavenger hunt for finding the good, the fun, the awesome. This has had a very positive impact on me in a crazy transitional phase of life. What I have found is that when you start thinking like this and looking at the world with this AWESOME perspective, you automatically smile more, walk with a bit more bounce and just enjoy life a bit (or a lot) better as you appreciate the awesomeness of it! I completely love this book! I have bought 10 copies at least since i heard about it. I gave it to each of my bridesmaids and also friends who had birthdays or who could just generally use a smile, and of course, one for me! This is more than a book, it is a jolt of positive thinking and a wonderful outlook on life and appreciating every little good thing that you encounter on your life's journey.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME! There's not much to say. I smiled the entire time reading it; I laughed aloud several times; I cried and absorbed every word at the end. I'm going to tell you what to do--you can choose whether or not to so do: get a copy of this book, somehow--you'll likely want to buy it, because you'll want to read it again; read the note that Neil left with Heather, which is in with her above review of the book; read the book, but not only that, read into what Neil is saying--it brings a tragedy to certain parts of the book that will make it all the more wholesome; read the copyright, publications, and Library of Congress information--the "small print mumbo jumbo" (376)--and smile at that surprise, then... finish it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Couldn't get past page 22! The concept of the book is great, the style in which it is written isn't. I was hoping for an uplifting read, but instead I got frustrated with the exaggeration and the repetition. I know that popping bubble wrap is fun, but I don't need a two-page explanation about it! Again, a great idea, but perhaps a list of awesome would be better ???

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great feel-good book that you'll recommend to everyone you know. Full of nostalgia, warmth and laugh out loud humour. Whether you're undergoing a crappy week/month/year or just need a dose of optimism, this book surely delivers. And the cherry on top is that you'll find yourself appreciating the little moments of happiness in your own life a little more, maybe even inspiring you to compile your own list of awesome!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reading Awesome is Awesome! From high-fiving babies to fries at the bottom of the take-out bag, Neil Pasricha's "always look on the bright side" approach to life is absolutely infectious! Every turn of the page dares the reader not to smile, or lose themselves in a sighing moment of "Yeah, that IS totally awesome" and with every page, the reader fails the dare. You can't read this book without walking away with a new lease on life and an appreciation of the little things. I am a teacher and I am bringing this book into my classroom to remind my students of how good we all have it, every, single day. Pasricha capitalizes on a simple, yet powerful concept and changes the world one reader at a time. To me, this book is undoubtedly.... AWESOME!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome!! It was very awesome to find a book that lived up to it's name! While reading this book I can't even count how many time it reminded me of things that I find Awesome now as an adult and back when I was a kid. In a time now where it seems we hear nothing but negative things on TV and in the news it was nice to have this little slice of positive to keep that smile on your face.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Book of Awesome is.... AWESOME! I love the word AWESOME so it drew me to read this book. It is a fun and simple read which really gets to the heart of the little things that bring us joy. The format of the Book of Awesome is sort of an extended list. Each title describes the awesome thing and then the actual body details the awesomeness. Some of my favorites include: Laughing so hard you make no sound at all, fixing electronics by smacking them, three-paycheck month, the parking lot pull through and High Tens ;-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book makes me smile! I stumbled across this book in an email from chapters.indigo.ca and the smiles haven't stopped since! I haven't finished the entire book yet, as I am taking my time to read it. I've been reading it with my sister in mind. She lives in Mexico and I miss having those laid back conversations about nothing with her. So, as I read each entry, I add a little note to my sister about what the entry makes me think of or remember. My sister is home for visit for two more weeks, so I have told her to save room in her luggage for a book. This book makes me smile, and I have read portions to friends and family that ring so true. I've been spreading the word about this book because it's one of those things that makes you happy, brings back good memories and is easy to share. It's pretty awesome.

When reading out loud a portion of one of Neil's awesome things an amazing thing happens, everyone in the room looks at one another, smiles and nods their head in agreement. It's almost as if Neil has captured some universal truths that everyone has experienced at some point in their life. Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Book of Awesome will inspire you to feel better about life Recently a favourite cousin of mine came for a visit armed with a book written by a young colleague from her office. Tucked into the book was a most charming note. Three sentences in I was hooked. I finished the note and dove into the book. From the moment I started reading The Book of Awesome I knew that author Neil Pasricha was extraordinary. His observations on life’s little joys are at once simple and deep. He brings to these observations the keen eye of a writer, the wit of a humorist, and the openness of an eternal optimist. This is just an unbeatable combination. It is impossible to read The Book of Awesome without being inspired to feel better about life. Sharing it with a friend or loved one will, in some small but wonderful way, change you both. In the spirit of sharing, here is Neil’s note: Dear Heather, My name is Neil Pasricha and I’m a no-name 30-year-old guy who lives in downtown Toronto. My mom is from Nairobi, and my dad is from New Delhi and they came to Canada in the 60’s. My sister and I were born and raised here and we had pretty quiet childhoods. All that quiet changed for me in 2008. On one hand it was my toughest year ever with my closest friend taking his life and my wife choosing to live hers apart from me. In these ashes I started a website - 1000awesomethings - to celebrate all the tiny joys in life that we get up for every day… like the cold side of the pillow, and snow days! To date I have had almost 12 million hits, won 2 webby awards, been on CNN, BBC and the front page of The Toronto Star. 10 literary agents came out of the woodwork, 5 publishers expressed real interest and ultimately Penguin Publishing won the rights to publish my book. Heather, I wanted you to have a copy and of course I would love to meet or chat. Thank you for reading this long note… Neil Pasricha

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lives up to it's title - and then some! Neil Pasricha's Book of Awesome will put a smile on your face and a skip in your step! What a breath of refreshing air! This book will remind you of the joy that can be found in the little things of everyday life. Written in bite-sized chapters, each describing an "awesome thing", The Book of Awesome is perfect for a quick 5-minute pick-me-up but you won't want to put it down. Would make a great gift for anyone, but I think students in particular would love it. To quote the great Gilda Radner, "I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me."
