NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Two great spiritual masters share their own hard-won wisdom about living with joy even in the face of adversity.

The occasion was a big birthday. And it inspired two close friends to get together for a talk about something very important to them. The friends were His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The subject was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet, despite having experienced great personal and national suffering.
From the beginning the book was envisioned as a three-layer birthday cake, the first being their personal stories and teachings about joy. Both the Dalai Lama and Tutu have been tested by extraordinary adversity, oppression, and conflict. The second layer consists of the exciting research into joy as well as the other qualities essential for any enduring happiness, like gratitude, humility, humour, compassion, generosity, and forgiveness. And the third encompasses practical exercises and guidance based on the Dalai Lama's and Tutu's own daily practices, which anchor their emotional and spiritual lives.
Most of all, during that landmark week in Dharamsala, they demonstrated by their own exuberance, compassion, and even wise-cracking humour, how joy can be transformed from a fleeting emotion into an enduring way of being.
HIS HOLINESS THE FOURTEENTH DALAI LAMA, TENZIN GYATSO, was born in 1935 to a peasant family in northeastern Tibet and was recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of his predecessor, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. The world's foremost Buddhist leader, he travels extensively, speaking eloquently in favor of ecumenical understanding...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book is a true gift! There are very few books that are able to bring about a sense of peace in the way that The Book of Joy does. Each time I open it, I feel grateful and happy to be able to learn from these two incredible human beings. This is not a step by step tutorial on how to live your life in perfect joy, but rather a gentle guide for cultivating a joyous life, told by two friends, both of whom have faced unspeakable hardships and suffering. The Dalai Lama and the Archbishop have given the world a great gift by collaborating and allowing their combined voices and stories to be shared together in this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone, religious or not, who is seeking to live a life of joy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great book I'm not religious but reading a book about conversations between Buddhism and catechism had less to do with religion and more to do with overall values. Makes you think and what to be a better person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply amazing. As a chapters employee we can put stickers on books we recommend. I will always put my name on this book when it comes it. This book I really believe you should read only 10 pages a day. I found if you actually read it slow you can think about what you just read for the whole day and remember a lot more if you really are trying to change your emotional health.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eye-opening I bought this book after watching a video that was promoting it. I was very low-spirited at the time and I just thought, "why not?" I can honestly say that this book has helped me get back on my feet and embrace life with such optimism. #plumreview
