Finalist for the 2018 International Thriller Writers Best Hardcover Thriller Award!

Named One of the Most Anticipated Thriller Novels Of 2017 by Bustle!

THE NEW CHILLING, PROPULSIVE NOVEL FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLING BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

If you can't trust yourself, who can you trust?

Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods. It was on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, and a woman was sitting inside-the woman who was killed. She's been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It's a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm, and she probably would have been hurt herself if she'd stopped. Not only that, her husband would be furious if he knew she'd broken her promise not to take that shortcut home.

But since then, she's been forgetting every little thing. Where she left the car; if she took her pills; even the alarm code.

The only thing she can't forget is that woman, the woman she might have saved, and the terrible nagging guilt.

And the silent calls she's receiving, or the feeling that someone's watching her.

You won't be able to put down B. A. Paris's The Breakdown, the next chilling, propulsive novel from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors.

B.A. PARIS is the New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors. She grew up in England but has spent most of her adult life in France. She has worked both in finance and as a teacher and has five daughters. The Breakdown is her second novel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Psychological thriller The Breakdown was an interesting read, though not as good as the debut novel written by B. A. Paris. The story begins slowly and, in the first part of the novel, the description of the main character's thoughts (Cass) is a bit repetitive. The novel becomes interesting, however, when it is suggested that not all is as it seems, that her illness may not be what is suggested. The clues that are dropped to suggest this, encourage the reader to try and work out what is actually happening. I love reading mysteries and thrillers when the changing scenarios keep the readers on their toes, so to speak. The start of this novel does not encourage this but, once the tidbits are dropped, the reading experience of the novel improves.  As all good thrillers do, the novel ends with a twist - half of which was unexpected for me. I enjoyed reading the way in which the protagonist experiences the revelation of what had happened to her and it ends with a satisfying conclusion. I would not label The Breakdown as B. A. Paris' best novel; but it is an enjoyable thriller nonetheless.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Captivating Plot I found some details in the story to be unrealistic. It got more interesting as continued to read. The beginning and middle didn't have a lot of suspense. However, near the end of the book, the plot became more interesting. I felt that the ending would have been better if an aftermath of the events and the next chapter of the main character' life had been briefly explained, for example an epilogue.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A fast and suspenseful read It was a fast and suspenseful read. Some of the story line regarding to the investigation, etc. was a bit too easy/unrealistic. But over all a really good read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not a bad thriller 3.5 stars. Some of it was a bit far-fetched but overall not a bad thriller.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable read but improbable elements After having read Behind Closed Doors, I was excited to read this book and it was an easy, enjoyable read. I did feel that the ending was too neat of a conclusion and very improbable. The way the truth was revealed is very unlikely, but there was still a nice twist at the very end. All in all, I'm glad I picked up this book and look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must Read I was really excited for this book since I loved Behind Closed Doors by Paris, and I was not disappointed. After reading the first few chapters I was absolutely hooked. It was such a good read! It was fast-paced and even though I figured out part of the ending before the end I missed a huge part of the mystery. It was great.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not great I chose to listen to this book because it was available at the library and had decent reviews for an audio book. However, the first three quarters of the book bored me to tears. I skipped large portions and was still able to follow the story line and figure out what happened at the end. I think it largely had to do with the writing, it was incredibly repetitive and stilted. However the ending was interesting enough for me to finish it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not the best Quick in the beginning, and then not a ton of development until the very end of the book. Not a great story line. It is a quick easy read so may be worth giving a try.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Boring After reading Behind Closed Doors I thought this one would be just as good. I was wrong. It started out very good, but then I found it very repetitive and boring. The same thing over and over and not really anything happening. I really struggled to finish this book and the ending was not a surprise. I figured it out very early in the book. This is not something that I would recommend. #indigoemployee

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Entertaining & Intense! Captivating, menacing and intense! This is a suspenseful thriller that highlights just how easily people can be psychologically and emotionally manipulated and how quickly things can spiral out of control. It is, ultimately, a story about relationships, friendship, greed, jealousy, exploitation, deception, and murder. The writing is crisp and clear. The characters are complex, secretive and unstable. And the plot, told through an unreliable narrator, builds nicely and has just the right of amount of tension, befuddlement, mystery, and authenticity. This is the second novel I’ve read by Paris and although I didn't find this novel as dark and disturbing as her previous novel it is certainly just as engrossing, entertaining and enjoyable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New from B.A. Paris I loved B. A. Paris's debut novel, Behind Closed Doors. I was very excited to see what she had in store for readers in her newest book, The Breakdown. Cass takes a shortcut home late one rainy night through a dark wooded area. She comes across a parked vehicle and wonders if the woman driver needs help. She pulls over, but the woman never exits her vehicle, so Cass drives on, thinking she will phone the police to let them know there's a possible breakdown. But she forgets to call and is stunned to find out that a woman named Jane was murdered on that same shortcut road last night. Cass seems to forget a lot these days and she is terrified that she has the same early onset dementia that her mother had. And she is just as terrified that the murderer may have seen her license plate as she drove by. And then things start happening.... "It's hard to believe that my split-second decision to take a shortcut through the woods that fateful Friday night has had such a devastating impact on my life. Jane may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time but so was I. So was I." Wonderful premise! And a decidedly unreliable narrator - are the 'things' happening all in her own mind? Or are they real? Is the murderer after her as well? And her memory seems to be rapidly deteriorating.... Paris introduces a set of friends and family and because we only meet them through Cass, I was suspicious of them all. The tension builds and builds as Cass becomes even more paranoid and terrified. The last one hundred pages turns everything upside down, providing the twist that psychological suspense lovers like myself are just waiting to discover. Read carefully as Paris drops little snippets of dialogue along the way that will point the reader in the right direction for the final whodunit. There are one or two pieces of the resolution that require a few grains of salt to be taken, but this didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book in any way. (In fact it ended up being read in a day on the weekend!) The Breakdown was another great read for me and I will be looking forward to Paris's next book. I always enjoy a clever title - Breakdown can be interpreted a couple of ways in this case.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from less compelling it took me time to finish this book as the protagonist's paranoia (or not) was annoying the hell out of me. i liked the way it started but then it became dragging and repetitive. then when i was about to give up boom! things turned around. so i kept reading. i gave this book a chance 'cause her first novel was really good. the ending was unexpected. i didnt like the fact that the main character was blaming herself for all the wrong things that have happened. honey, adult make their own life choices. dont throw a pity party on your behalf just because your loved ones are screwed up. so yes. just 1 star for this one.

Editorial Reviews

"A story with a ratcheting sense of unease - a tale of friendship and love, sanity and the terrible unravelling of it." -USA Today"B. A. Paris has done it again! The Breakdown is a page-turning thriller that will leave you questioning the family you love, the friends you trust, and even your own mind." -Wendy Walker, author of the USA Today bestselling novel All Is Not Forgotten"In the same vein as the author's acclaimed debut, Behind Closed Doors, this riveting psychological thriller pulls readers into an engrossing narrative in which every character is suspect. With its well-formed protagonists, snappy, authentic dialog, and clever and twisty plot, this is one not to miss." -Library Journal (starred)"This psychological thriller is even harder to put down than Paris' 2016 best-seller debut Behind Closed Doors; schedule reading time accordingly.. With two in a row, Paris moves directly to the thriller A-list." -Booklist (starred)"British author Paris follows her bestselling debut, 2016's Behind Closed Doors, with another first-rate psychological thriller.... Tension quickly builds to a crescendo as Cass's fears...become palpable." -Publishers Weekly (starred review)Praise for Behind Closed Doors"Debut-novelist Paris adroitly toggles between the recent past and the present in building the suspense of Grace's increasingly unbearable situation, as time becomes critical and her possible solutions narrow. This is one readers won't be able to put down." -Booklist (starred review)"Making her smash debut, Paris [keeps] the suspense level high. In the same vein as Gone Girl or Girl on the Train, this is a can't-put-down psychological thriller." -Library Journal (starred review)"This debut is guaranteed to haunt you - especially if you're about to tie the knot. Paris's thriller asks the question: 'The perfect marriage or the perfect lie?' Jack and Grace, the couple at the center of this totally enthralling novel, are so clearly not what they seem you'll have no choice but to read and read and read until their darkest secrets are revealed. Warning: brace yourself." -Bustle (10 New Thrillers to Read This Summer)"A gripping domestic thriller.the sense of believability and terror that engulfs Behind Closed Doors doesn't waver." -The Associated Press, picked up by The Washington Post"Behind Closed Doors takes a classic tale to a whole new level. This was one of the best and [most] terrifying psychological thrillers I have ever read.each chapter brings you further in, to the point where you feel how Grace must feel. The desperation, the feeling that no one will believe you and yet still wanting to fight because someone you care deeply about will get hurt." -San Francisco Book Review"Paris grabs the reader from the beginning with a powerful and electrifying tale. Behind Closed Doors, a novel sure to make one's skin crawl, also reveals no one truly knows what does go on behind closed doors."-New York Journal of Books"Newlyweds Grace and Jack Angel seem to lead a perfect life in British author Paris's gripping debut, but appearances can be deceiving...Grace's terror is contagious, and Millie's impending peril creates a ticking clock that propels this claustrophobic cat-and-mouse tale toward its grisly, gratifying conclusion." -Publishers Weekly"A frighteningly cool portrait of a serious sadist, Behind Closed Doors is a gripping, claustrophobia-inducing thriller... Read at the risk of running from every handsome British lawyer who crosses your path." -Romantic Times"This book proves that looks are most definitely deceiving...Disturbing, to say the least, readers will definitely be shaken as the story commences and they become immediately absorbed. The writing was incredible, and the pace is quick, offering up too many chills to count...Behind Closed Doors screams: 'Stay single!'" -Suspense Magazine"This book just has to be huge in 2016. I flew through it in two breathless sittings. Quite simply: astounding." -S.J.I. Holliday, author of Black Wood"This outstanding debut novel will leave you breathless." -Bella"This one is 2016's answer to Gone Girl. Nuff said." -Women's Health UK"It took me just an afternoon to read this book and by the end, my heart was pounding. If you like fast and frantic stories, you'll love this." -The Sun"Behind Closed Doors is an intriguing, sharply gripping debut thriller." -Lovereading.co.uk"An utterly compelling journey through the darker side of the human psyche. Your blood will run cold but you won't be able to stop reading, I promise you that." -Sarah Harper, Lovereading reviewer"This has been one of my best reads EVER and will be huge in 2016. Congratulations to B A Paris on a remarkable debut book." -Shelley Bennett, The Book Club member
