about

Twenty-seven-year-old Joanna Kurtz has made several trips to the altar, but never as a bride. The single young Amishwoman is a closet writer with a longing to be published-something practically unheard of in her Lancaster County community. Yet Joanna's stories aren't her only secret. She also has a beau who is courting her from afar, unbeknownst even to her sister, Cora, who, though younger, seems to have suitors to spare. Eben Troyer is a responsible young Amishman who hopes to make Joanna Kurtz his bride-if he can ever leave his parents' farm in Shipshewana, Indiana. Yet with his only brother off in the English world, intent on a military career, Eben's hopes for building a life with his dear Joanna are dimming, and patience is wearing thin. Will Joanna ever be more than a bridesmaid?]]>

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Standalone The Bridesmaid Beverly Lewis Book Summary: Twenty-seven-year-old Joanna Kurtz has made several trips to the altar, but never as a bride. The single young Amishwoman is a closet writer with a longing to be published something practically unheard of in her Lancaster County community. Yet Joanna's stories aren't her only secret. She also has a beau who is courting her from afar, unbeknownst even to her sister, Cora, who, though younger, seems to have suitors to spare. Eben Troyer is a responsible young Amishman who hopes to make Joanna Kurtz his bride--if he can ever leave his parents' farm in Shipshewana, Indiana. Yet with his only brother off in the English world, intent on a military career, Eben's hopes for building a life with his dear Joanna are dimming, and patience is wearing thin. Will Joanna ever be more than a bridesmaid? Review: It took me a while to get into the book when I started but then it took off!! I breezed through it. I had mixed emotions about Joanna and Eben in the beginning. I was not disposed to like Cora Jane especially with some of the things she did but Joanna had such a real and amazing love for her sister. I loved going back to Hickory Hallow. That was a special treat, especially with the recent movies of Shunning and Confession that have come out. I really found it to be fun to see where Katie grew up with that community today. I really could empathize with Joanna about the way the Pastor was. I think that it was a little more than necessary since the Pastor’s admonishments were heavy handed to Joanna alone. If true than he should have included her parents in the talk since she lived in their home. Than to include her parents in it at the end when he amended his conditions was less realistic Over all it was a great standalone book that was well put together with realistic characters and an interesting premise along with some fun complications. The ending was almost too convenient but realistic because life does work out that simply in the end. I would like to thank Library Thing and Bethany House Publishers for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVE the Hickory Hollow series! Ah yes, yet another book that was devoured in less than 24 hours. I really am becoming quite a fan of Beverly Lewis, or at least of her Home to Hickory Hollow series. She has an amazing way with words, weaving a very clear picture in your head of the story. A connection with the characters was very easily made, and you pray for Joanna's life to get sorted out (with Eben!) while reading. Am eagerly awaiting book 3!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Story Joanna is getting to the point where she will be past marrying age but she is still has faith that she will be married one day. She is constantly being asked to be a bridesmaid and her sister is concerned with the superstition of 'three times a bridesmaid never a bride' and thinks that Joanna should just say no to people. Joanna is at a funeral in Virginia Beach and she is sitting at the beach and meets Eben Troyer, and Amish man who is from another region. They quickly become friends and wish for more but they are in different states. Eben has to be with his family farm as he is the only kid at home but he is wanting to be with Joanna. Is it possible and will it ever work out. Apparently this is a second book in the series 'Home to Hickory Hollow' but not having read the first book I would have never guessed this to be part of a series. So it can be a stand alone book. This is also the first book that I have read by this author and really enjoyed it. It was very descriptive in characters and then also the scenery. It was very easy to feel like you were a part of the story. The characters were really loveable. You can really feel their struggles and their joys. It is neat to see that through all of it, ups and downs that Joanna still had her faith in God. I really enjoyed this book and will look into others in this series and that the author has written. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great read by Mrs. Lewis! "Twenty-seven-year-old Joanna Kurtz has made several trips to the altar, but never as a bride. Will Joanna ever be more than a bridesmaid?" The Bridesmaid is the second book in Beverly Lewis' trilogy Home to Hickory Hollow series, but is could also be read as a stand alone. Mrs. Lewis is one of my favorite authors and I have enjoyed every book I have read by her. I love how vivid her descriptions of the settings are. It makes you feel like you are right there in Hickory Hollow. Joanna is a wonderfully written character. Her heartbreak over her relationship with Eben made me tear up at points. I loved how even in the midst of not understanding, she placed her full trust in the Lord, even going as far as laying out a "fleece" before Him. (I won't give it away, but I loved that little side story in the novel.) Eben's dedication to his family is noble and heart wrenching all at the same time. I would highly recommend this book and cannot wait for Mrs. Lewis' next one! "Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Amish Favourite A simple love story rife with complications. How's that for an oxymoron? Loved this gentle read steeped in family and faith but not without moments of angst. In fact there's a certain secondary character who caused me no end of grief! She made me want to barge right into the Kurtz home and take control of the story! Lewis is such a solid writer of Amish fiction and I love the depth in character and plot that make her stories so satisfying. This one is beautifully told and a wonderful read Amish lovers everywhere won't want to miss. "Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|September 11, 2012|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-0978-9 The Latest in Chart-Topping Amish Fiction from Beverly Lewis. Twenty-four-year-old, Joanna Kurtz has made several trips to the altar, but never as a bride. The single young Amish woman is a closet writer with a longing to be published, something practically unheard of in her Lancaster County community. Yet Joanna’s stories aren’t her only secret. She also has a beau who is courting her from afar, unbeknownst to even her sister, Cora, who, though younger, seems to have suitors to spare. Eben Troyer is a responsible young Amish man who hopes to make Joanna Kurtz his bride – if he can ever leave his parents’ farm in Shipshewana, Indiana. Yet with his only brother off in the English world, intent on a military career, Eben’s hopes for building a life with his dear Joanna are dimming, and patience is wearing thin. Will Joanna ever be more than a bridesmaid? My Review: Twenty-four-year-old, Joanna Kurtz, has been in many weddings but never her own. Her seventeen-year-old sister, Cora Jane, had said “Three times a bridesmaid, never a bride” which sent ripples of longing through Joanna’s heart. Once again poor, Joanna has been asked to be in another wedding, that of her cousin Malinda’s. However, although Joanna yearns for love and marriage, she has given up on love and detested anyone’s pity. While sitting in the sand at Virginia Beach where she was attending a family funeral, Joanna meets, Eben Troyer from Indiana. Joanna was from Pennsylvania. She was shocked when, Eben sought her out to introduce himself and then asked her to walk with him to the fishing pier. Joanna politely agreed and Eben offered his hand to help her up out of the sand. She was only going to be in Virginia Beach for three days and soon their time together ended with the exchange of addresses. Eben and Joanna communicated but it was her secret as she carefully hid his letters in her hope chest. She wasn’t quite ready to divulge the fact to anyone, including her family, that she had a boyfriend. Eben is totally smitten with Joanna and wants to make her his bride but circumstances beyond his control make it impossible to leave his parent’s farm. Although, Eben and Joanna communicate by letter will Joanna ever become the bride she so desperately wants to be? And, it’s Eben she wants to marry! Beverly Lewis’s The Bridesmaid is a beautiful, engaging story of love, hope, faithfulness, and a hard lesson in keeping secrets. I was so enamoured with this story that I read it in one sitting and I’ll definitely be recommending this book to all my friends. Book #3 of the ‘Home to Hickory Hollow’ series titled “The Guardian” will be available on April 2, 2013.
