From the humble heights of a Class A pitchers mound to the deflating laws of sleeping on his gun-toting grandmother's air mattress, veteran reliever Dirk Hayhurst steps out of the bullpen to deliver the best pitch of his career- a raw and unflinching account of his life in the minors. <_o3a_p>

Whether training tarantulas to protect his room from thieving employees in a backwater hotel or absorbing the gentle mockery of some not-quite-starstuck schoolchildren, Hayhurst reveals a side of baseball-and life- rarely seen on ESPN.<_o3a_p>

Drafted from Kent State University in 2003 as a senior sign, Dirk Hayhurst has pitched professionally for seven seasons on seven minor league teams and two big-league teams, the San Diego Padres and the Toronto Blue Jays. Since 2007, he has blogged about baseball for Baseball America.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the read... An excellent book. A little "disturbing" to read about what the minor leagues are really like - particularly for baseball parents. A lot "entertaining" to read about the day-to-day exploits of aspiring big leaguers. And, "inspiring" as Hayhurst pulls it all together in the closing chapters. If you love baseball, the combination of reality, entertainment, and inspiration will leave you wanting more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I had no idea the sort of stuff minor leaguers go through. Like someone else said, this isn't as much of a book about baseball than it is about life. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's not a book about baseball book, it's about life Hayhurst writes a book about what it means to realize no matter what you do it does not have to define who you are. This is a book about life with some stories about baseball in it. I read it cover to cover within a day of getting it and I am now bothering everyone I know to read it too. It is rare that someone is able to look in the mirror and see both the good and the bad about themselves, let alone write about what they see. read this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME READ I started following Dirk Hayhurst on Twitter where he tweets about life, baseball and Garfooses in a way that makes people follow him just to see what he has to say next. So when I found out he had written a book I was anxiously awaiting for it to come out. There was alot of positive reviews before Bullpen Gospels release and now I know why, it is a great book. It tells the story of a real person through ups and downs of life while making you smile with some of the adventures. Dirk has a way of writing that made me turn page after page without thinking of how long I was reading since I could not get enough of his stories.Even if you do not like baseball, this is a book about a man and his take on life, one that many people could learn from.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning... Simply put, The Bullpen Gospels is the most 'real' book on baseball that I have has the pleasure to read. Sure, I have no idea what it's like to struggle to make it to the big leagues...but, despite what others say, I do know what it's like to be struggle through ups and downs in trying to achieve your goals. Dirk Hayhurst dispenses with the glitz of being a professional baseball player, and reveals the aforementioned struggle with an amazing sense of humour...yet a very real, and dark perspective of what it's like to chase your Big League (or any) dreams...
