Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bonding time with my daughter! I wanted a book to share with my daughter about the changes she would be going through. It has been a great bonding time for us. She can't wait to read a little bit more each day! I really like all of the situation examples with advice for how to handle them! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect When I hit a certain age, instead of talking to me, my mom handed me this book. And, with this book, it turned out that I didn't have to ask any questions. It told me everything I had to know, and it did so in a way that was approachable and didn't make me feel awkward or bored. Give this to girls everywhere, and it will teach them everything they have to know, preparing them for their future. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic info for pre pubescent girls I bought this for my 9 year old because She was shy to talk about things but had tons of questions. This was an excellent resource and she's even loaning it to her b.f.f. to read. Added bonus is that she felt more receptive to conversations and asking me about the things she read about. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great starting point I purchased this book to assist me with addressing body changes with my 8 year old daughter. My daughter began son minor changes in her body at age 7 and there was a rapid increase after she turned 8. She was embarrassed to mention the changes that her body was going through and so I used the book as a guide to help her understand things and ask questions. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic book! Many of my mom friends recommend this book. We were given one of the original issues and ended up buying this one because the maturity level is a little lower. I read it first and thought it was wonderful. Kids are all different and my 2 girls are at different levels of body awareness. I had to push my older one to read at the end of 5th grade. I worked on updating her room and she read it with me in the room in an hour or so. I asked if she had any questions. She was so relieved to not feel embarrassed. It helped us open up an easy dialog about changes and how these changes a re natural and nothing to be worried about. Excellent. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Book! I purchased this book on the suggestion of our pediatrician and he was spot on. My daughter is on the cusp of dealing with all the things the book discusses and I wanted to make sure that we have open lines of communication in regards to all these things and this book does just that! I was concerned how I was going to talk to her about all the things that a young girl needs to know/deal with but this book covers them all and so appropriately! We have read a chapter or two every few days and she asks questions and is genuinely interested in what is going to happen to her body in the next few years. I am so glad that this book was recommended to me and have in turn recommended it to others! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Care & Keeping of You 1 Just bought this book for my little girl. I thought this was a great book to introduce all of the changes that are starting with her body. It was very helpful in opening the door to discussion about her body and emotions. It has colorful pictures and is broken down into groups starting with the head. Then in each section it talks about the changes, things you should do to keep yourself healthy. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a little girl getting ready to hit puberty. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for every girl!! I am a 30yr old woman, who was given this book when I was 11. It made my transition into a woman so much easier. I wasn't afraid, I didn't feel weird or dirty or ashamed. It made me a strong and confidant young woman and I've passed this book on to sisters, cousins, friends, and random strangers. It truly is the best way for a girl to understand her body. Also makes it incredibly easy for parents to have those not so easy conversation s with your kids! Help build your girl into a body positive woman by buying her these books. She will thank you one day!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Opens up the door to everything girl! My daughter started having small changes at just age 8. When I realized this I found it difficult to word the topics that needed addressed for someone so young. This book was perfect, it appropriately explains in a manner that is understandable to younger minds and with the Q&A from other girls, help to make my daughter feel normal. Just a few weeks of reading together and some alone reading for the more sensitive parts and we were able to go bra shopping as a wonderful celebration of growing up. I have now recommended this book to counselors and friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for pre-teen girls who... This book has been great for my 9 year old daughter. New emotions are so hard for girls that have never experienced them before. This book has been a great bonding experience for my daughter and myself. We read it together then I let her keep it and read it alone. She comes and asks questions but know's the some answers (from the book). Now when she gets emotional/hormonal she understands it's ok. Thank you for this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Breaking the Ice on Difficult Conversations I love this book. My 9 year old daughter and I read it together and we are able to have good conversations about the challenging topics. The information is presented in a very age appropriate way and gives girls a good sense of what to expect as their body changes but also what they need to do to maintain healthy bodies. My daughter decided she was ready for a bra, though I disagreed she cited the book directly by saying "when you are more comfortable with a bra than without you are ready." I bought one...she rarely wears it but she feels in control of her changing body and I couldn't ask for better than that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Former customer When I was young I received the original book that inspired this series and it helped me so much more than any other book or lesson I received. I passed it onto younger girls when I outgrew it. Now I have this one and plan on using it for the next generation of girls!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it!!!! I absolutely LOVE this book!! I grew up with the older version of this book, before they had a 1 and 2. I loved it as a kid. It helped answer many questions I didn't know I had. As a mom and auntie I love this book because I know I can trust it to deal with issues about growing up, without it crossing into the more "mature" topics that I need to adress head on at a later age. I have bought this book for my daughter as well as for a couple of my neices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great guide for growing up discussions I bought this book to read with my then 10 year old daughter. Her 8 year old sister joined us for about half of the book. We read it out loud together and it was a wonderful guide to discussions about everything she needed to know, from hygiene to the changing body. There are even drawings (tastefully done, cartoon type sketches) and letters/stories from girls that make it accessible to our own growing girls. I plan on completing this book with our second daughter and using it with our third!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Okay... I really thought this book has some wonderful advice and it helps a lot. Although,I believe it is not appropriate for kids 9 and younger because of the things that are in this book. Otherwise I would definitely recommend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great books! My 9 year old has these books and I think they are filled with a wealth of knowledge and advice from other girls. When I gave these to my daughter we went through the book section by section and discussed some of the broader points before I let her take them. I told her that she could read from them at any time and if she ever had any questions, whether related to things in the book, or just questions she needs answered that I was always there to help. Teaching this starts at home, but this is a great reference for girls!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Moms Helper! I wish my mom would have had this book when I was a little girl. This book helps you begin your journey with your daughter, on taking care of ourselves. It takes an easy to understand approach to explaining how girls bodies change, as they become young women. The more we can talk, the more they will share. Thanks to American Girl for such a wonderful Mother & Daughter experience

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grew Up Reading This Book I have received American Girl magazines and books ever since I was basically old enough to, probably around 2003, when I was 7. I remember always wanting an American Girl doll that looks like me-- never got it, unfortunately (though I still kind of want one, if not but just to have it). Anyway, if I've done the math right you know I'm 19 now, and I'm looking back on my childhood. I remember this book specifically--The Care and Keeping of You-- as the best nonfiction resource I ever read as a kid. It didn't necessarily go in order of my experiences but I remember going through everything that was detailed in this book; as a normal girl I figured out braces, periods, bra-selecting decisions, leg and armpit shaving, the whole nine yards all with the help of this book. At the time I felt like I could feel myself growing up, and it was just kind of surreal. I couldn't be more thankful for my parents who bought this book for me (but didn't shove it down my throat and read it to me) and for American Girl who has and continues to publish great stories and nonfiction books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Resource I've Found I stumbled across this book when I was looking for resources for my pre-teen daughter to read to answer her growing questions about how babies are made and puberty. I love how this book explains things at an age-appropriate "wholesome" level. It is a stair step to the info that they need to gain as they grow up. It was presented concisely but thoroughly and totally engaged I daughter. It created good conversation points for the two of us. We have continued on with Book 2 and I recommend to my friends who are looking for a book to share with their daughters

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great idea! This is a great book for girls whose parents think they are ready to learn about their private body stuff. It really gives you tons of information for when your girl begins puberty. A lot of the stuff in this book I had never heard of, so my mom talked through a lot of things with me to help me understand. We flipped through the book, and then I read it myself. It is very engaging and informative. I have the journal for this book but have not done anything inside of it. If your girl has never heard of some of the stuff inside, I reccomend you explain some to her first - I was a little startled myself at first to hear about some of the things! And I love how a bunch of the pictures focus on the same three girls, whom I have come to name Anna (the short, red-headed girl), Ivy (the taller Asian girl), and Alexis/Alexa (the African-American). ; ) Also, I wanted to add that in this book it talks about a lot of girls sharing their body stuff with their friends. Hey, news flash - it's YOUR body, and we are not meant to share a bunch of private stuff. Over all, this is a great book and will keep you up-to-date with your changing body! : )

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Book This book was great to help start the conversations about the changes my daughter was experiencing or will experience. I have recommended this book to other mothers to read with their daughters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best gift ever My mother passed away when I was 12 and my best friends mother gave me this book to make things easier as I got older. Of course the book is no substitute for a good old fashioned talk. I must say this book has made me a very confident young women. I'm now 20 and away at college and I saw this book on amazon while I was scrolling, and remembered having this book when I was younger. This book has great advice on how to care for your skin, teeth and much more. This book was a great tool and saved me from some embarrassing conversations with my dad. The book also reminded me to never be embarrassed to approach my dad, doctor or friends mother with questions. Thank you American Girl!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from YERY helpfull!!!! I got this book for Christmas and it was great. I read it over and over and over. Some things got explained, but I still have questions. I think the age group should be from 9 and up, but that is up to you. (I don't think 8 year olds should know this stuff)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Starter Purchased this for my 8 year old who is more developed than her friends. She's about 5' tall so I have a feeling she will change sooner than everyone else. I don't want her to be blindsided in the event she starts her period before she learns about what it is. The illustrations are nice, the advice is tasteful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely educational, a must read I honestly don't understand the negative reviews this book has received. If you're worried about its age appropriateness for your daughter, find it in a bookstore or look through it before giving it to her, and then make your decision about whether or not she's at the right age to read it. You know your kid best, and if you think she can handle it, go for it. If she's not, maybe wait a year and come back to it. This book covers important topics about getting older, and does it in an extremely age appropriate way. It encourages dialogue between a girl and her parent, and can be used as a great way to start breaking the ice. The first edition was one of the first books my mom gave me when I started going through puberty, and I was really glad to see it was still in print and had been updated with new information! It's very well written, and I couldn't recommend it more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Book My daughter developed early. Very young as so many girls do nowadays. This book was a wonderful way to talk with her about the changes. It empowered her to learn more on her own and allowed her to formulate the questions she wanted to ask me. I find her referring to this book all the time. When she started her period at the age of 9, it didn't even phase her because she was informed and prepared. Thank you, American Girl!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must-have My mom bought this book for me when I was nine and I loved it. It explains a lot of questions that I was afraid to ask before, and now I can tell my mom anything! I do think that some images may seem a little "graphic" but it is the truth. We need to know what to expect. All in all, this was a great book and it is a must-have for a girl who is afraid of the changes ahead

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book! I got this for my daughter and we've been reading through it starting around 9 years old. The parts about puberty uses correct terminology but is still age appropriate. The only part that may be a bit detailed for some is a how-to on using a tampon - we just skipped that page until it's relavent. I would really recommend this book to all girls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lifesaver! My little girl was diagnosed with precocious puberty, and we were fearful that she would be facing some frightening changes at age 8. We wondered how in the world to handle the "just in case" scenarios. AG to the rescue with a collection thoughtful, gentle explanations of potentially scary changes! Though most of our fears never came to fruition (thank heavens!), my daughter, her dad, and I were prepared.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect! This book is a great discussion starter. I bought this for my 8 year old and she loved it. We were able to help her on the right path of understanding all the changes that were in store for her. Its time for us to be open and honest with our daughters and start talking to them. This book is a great beginning step.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Health Book I have used this with my two daughters. The book provides age-appropriate information in an engaging and memorable way. The girls enjoyed the responses to letters from girls their own age. The book provided a good springboard for us to discuss hygiene; growth and development; and health issues within the context of our worldview. The girls have often returned to it as a reference. Thanks for creating such a useful tool to promote discussion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favorite Book I think this book is great. It lets girls know things like getting gum out of their hair. It also explains what a period is and what pads and tampons are and how to use them. Another thing this book has is how much food and exercise you should get. I definately recomend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing-Great for Growing Girls! I love this book! It is great because it introduces a variety of things that start/are happening to girls 8 and up. I recommend flipping through the book to make sure that this is what you want your daughter to know. They do include pictures that may be disturbing to some girls. Inserting a tampon and the 5 stages of breast development are awkward to look at, but are really helpful. If you and your daughter are 100% honest with each other, then this is a great book for you to discuss together. If you and your daughter are close, but not in personal topic-speaking, then this can be great for your daughter to get the facts without an unsettling conversation. All in all, I recommend this with all my heart. Best purchase ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have for Young Girls Becoming Young Ladies This book is very well written and reader friendly for my daughter, age 10, who is about to hit the fun stage of life called puberty. A friend told me about it and I ordered it immediately. My daughter was already beginning to ask questions and I now feel better prepared to answer them. Since the book is written by American Girl, my daughter is extremely interested in reading it!! She is a huge American Girl fan with 4 dolls, a gazillion outfits, and many accessories from the concession stand to the beds. She's also visited the store in New York 3 times and that is BIG for us Georgia folks. So we thank you American Girl for creating a book that makes it easier for parents to help answer those difficult questions and for making the book so interesting that my daughter wants to read it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book! This book is so great. My docter actually told me I should get a book on puberty so this is just perfect! The tips are very good and help a lot. I usually want to learn about my body alone. It seems a little weird talking with others about it, this is a very good book for girls who are starting puberty and growing up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for that Mother/Daughter conversation I had no idea where to start when it came to talking to my daughter. I came across this book while at a bookstore. I knew immediately it was just what we needed. We sit together and read which creates the perfect opportunity for her to ask any questions she may have. Thanks American Girl!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book! I was lucky enough to find this at my local bookstore for a really good price and decided to take a chance and pick it up for my niece (8). I didn't find it graphic or inappropriate at all, it's very informative, relevant and well written. I definitely do not agree with the reviews that say it should have the age rating of 10+ (or 12+) children are going threw puberty earlier every generation, our girls deserve to be prepared! With that being said, I do recommend that a parent or guardian PRE-READ this before giving it to the girl, only you know your child! In our case, I plan on holding off with this for another year if I can, strictly because I know she's not quite mentally and emotionally mature enough to handle such a serious topic just yet

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Book for Growing Girls I took a chance on this book because I desperately needed a conversation starter on the idea of body changes with my daughter. I knew she was not ready to hear about the changes that are starting with her body but I was hoping that this book would appeal to the reader inside her. And it worked! The language is simple, but direct and as accurate as I would detail for her myself. I would recommend this book without a moment of hesitation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best AG book ever!!!! I loved this book then I read it! I hated coming to the end of it! It talked all about How to take care of your body, and it talked all about Underarms, and shaving, and bras, and all of the things you needed to know about your period. I'ts got great tips on how to keep your body looking it's best. RECOMEND!!!!!!! Thanks so much AG!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book for girls starting puberty There is nothing graphic about this book. There is no discussion of inappropriate topics. Puberty is a pretty scary time and girls at that age naturally have a lot of questions that they might be too embarrassed to ask - this book answers these questions sensitively and appropriately. It's important that we tell our girls that everything happening to them is normal and is nothing to be ashamed of. The overall tone of the book is reassuring and tries to help girls see something frightening as something that's exciting and full of new challenges. I am surprised that this book is recommended for 8-12 and not 10+ - in my opinion, some of the topics (the later chapters) wouldn't be useful to a younger girl and might in fact frighten her if she's not ready for such information (you know your kid best).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Purchase! I have seen many reviews saying this book is "graphic" and "inappropriate". Honestly, I do not see what is so wrong with this book. My daughter was young when I got this for her, but I discussed it with her and she understood. This is part of life and people should not complain about it, because every girl is going to have to go through this eventually. I think this book is a good idea and it makes my daughter's growing up not as awkward, because she knows what to expect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good info for pre-teens I bought this book for my daughter last year and all her friends were so jealous that she had the book. It gives all the right information in a way that's not embarrassing to the girls (although there are a couple of drawings that they kind of giggled over) and it's a great way to start a meaningful conversation with your daughter about all the changes she will be going through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful growing up book. This is such a great book to share between mother and daughter for growing up girlie things. It's great for talking points and also for knowing it's normal for girls to go through these things. Please consider making the personal info on monthly choices a fold out or perforated page for timeliness. I like all other topics early but think this can wait, my daughter is 10 years and doesn't need this diagram this early. Thank you for such a great book, I wish my mom would have had this when I was young.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was so amazed! My 9 yr old daughter has always flatly refused to discuss anything to do with her body, puberty etc. I bought this, intending to read it myself first and then try to read it with her or let her read it and let her know that she could ask me any questions. I had not read it but she started reading it on her own(I had no idea) and suddenly she was asking questions, talking about the things she'd learned-even with her Dr! I've read most of it and as a nurse I can say that AG has done a terrific job with this subject! Whether your daughter is interested or not but is getting to that age-get it for her-you won't regret it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Book Choice for Growing Up When my 9 year old daughter went to her last physical, the nurse practitioner brought this book in with her. If she considers it a good resource, believe me, we will too! It has a great mix of humor and realism. Girls today seem to be maturing at a faster rate than I remember, so this is a great guide for parents who might be nervous about "the Talk." Relax and read along.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Worth Picking Up I bought this to read WITH my daughter to help her get use to the changes that are about to take place as she gets older. It was very nice as we could focus on those sections that pertain to her now and then we went back to the other sections as needed. This book lays out life's changes in a very non-scary way and made it very easy to speak to my daughter about her changing body.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book for Little Girls Growing Up! This book was a gift to my daughter. Its the best book ever for both my girls as they are getting older and starting to notice changes in their bodies. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful for Starting/Continuing Discussions This book has now been handed down to my second daughter and we'll be holding on to it for our third as well. It is very age appropriate without "talking down" to the girls and has sparked many discussions between us. I highly recommend it for any girl getting close to puberty (or girls whose friends have started puberty but they haven't yet).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Important for Growing Girls I can't believe this book received bad reviews. Sure, the pictures are a little gross, but a girl has to learn what her body will become later. I don't think an eight year old would be mature enough to read this without acting like a toddler so I'd recommend it for a ten year old at the least. Otherwise, it gives great advice on how a girl should take care of herself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book I have read alot of reveiws on this book and i definetly disagree with some. This is a great book for girls of all ages ranging from 8 and up. My daughter is 8 yrs old and she is already developing, this book was very well written and was able to answer alot of questions my daughter has. We went through this book page by page so if she had any questions or needed explanations than i was there to answer. The bottom line is i would buy this book again without hesitation. And for young girls who develope early this is a very tasteful book made well with them in mind. This book has nothing in it that isnt reality and i believe that they should be fully aware that you understand and that you are willing to talk to them about it anytime.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic book!! This is very, very good book. I got it a long time ago when I was just starting to go through some of the things the book was talking about. My mom and I went through it and I learned a lot of really helpful things. I still sometimes look in the book and find myself thinking about one or another of the things talked about inside. It think that this is a great book for pre-teens just going into puberty, whether that age is 8 or 13 or whatever. Any girl starting puberty should read this book. It really does help. Great book AG!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not innapropriate! I have seen some reveiws that say this book should be only for 12+ but the truth is, although many mothers may not want to admit it, by 12 most girls will be going through, or on the edge of going through what this book talks about! sure, some 8 year olds may not be mature enough, but if you (a mom)go through the book with her, she will be more prepared for what is to come! admit it, This book is no way innapropriate!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great book for any girl! I would recommend this book to any girl 10+, but younger girls can read some of it (taking care of your hair, teeth...) Some people feel that it is innapropriate, but it is just realistic. The book does talk about puberty, breasts, and bras, but it is a must-have for any pre-teen!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have My daughters aged 8 and 10 love this book. I read the book before giving it to them which all parents should do with any book of this nature. Don't take my word for it. Here is our experience with this book though: Sensitive topics are discussed in a respectful way with the aim of building self-confidence in our daughters. The goal is to teach young ladies self-respect and to impart a sense of responsibility to them over their personal health and well being. It is engaging and encourages girls to talk to a trusted adult. Bottom line...I'd buy it all over again in a heartbeat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must for all girls! This is a book my daughter asked for a few Christmas' ago she is now 11. Even at 9 she wanted it and could relate to many of the things in the book about taking care of herself. We of course have always been open and talked about body changes from a young age to help make transitioning as easy as possible. But this book made things seem so much easy going and calm. She reads the book quite often and shares it with friends. It has to be the best book purchase I have ever made and It has helped her be more prepared for the next few years with more difficult body changes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well-put information Although for some girls ages 9-10, this might be early, but generally the book puts things in a gentle way. My daughter found all the information very useful, got a lot of her questions answered, and currently checks the book if she has any questions. This book is well worth the price, since it contains things like puberty, but also things like food and vitamins; or generally a large variety. 100% recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a great choice! My daughter is starting to go through some really big changes as she's headed toward her teen years. She is 11, and this book made us both feel comfortable talking about all the physical changes her body will go through. I read the book to her one chapter at a time and we discussed any concerns she may have. This book is wonderful in stressing inner beauty! It also has illustrations that are tastefully done to show in more detail how a girl's body changes as she starts to become a woman. Because of the illustrations, I do not recommend this book for girls that are not ready to talk about big changes in their bodies. Overall, I am very pleased with this book. When I bought this book at the Dallas store, I was impressed that the cashier pointed out that I needed to read this book with my daughter. She also asked if I had looked over the book before I decided to purchase it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book! This is a really great book for girls growing up! It's encouraging girls to not be embarrased or stressed out while growing up. I also think the pictures encourage girls to be positive and happy in their life. Just make sure you think about who you are giving this to. Younger girls probably aren't going to understand this and find it inappropiate. Overall this a a wonderful book to purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grown-up American Girl I received this book when I turned 9. In third grade I was already developing much faster than my peers and was lost, confused and hating myself for looking different. I had saved and saved for my Samantha doll and loved American Girl, so my mom bought me this book. I am now 20 years old. Eleven years later, I can say this book changed my life. Even though I wasn't even a teenager and was still undergoing puberty, the book let me know it was OK and normal. Truly, this book changed my life. If you are considering buying this book, please do so. A little girl in your life will thank you. Take it from a little girl who grew up faster than the rest.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Appropriate for Right Age I got this book a little while ago for my older daughter when she was 10, and it was a great way to discuss issues they NEED to know about in a fun/cartoon way. There are no graphic pictures or inappropriate words or phrases. Girls are growing up fast, whether we like it or not. I was able to pass it down to my younger one also. If you are offended by the book because your daughter is too young, then don't buy it. Read through it and decide. But we can't shelter our daughters from things that WILL happen.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from VERY inapropriate for young readers! This should NOT be rated eight plus! You should make it at least ten plus or maybe higher! My daughter found this SO inapropriate that she gave it away to her friend. I personally think it helps, but my daughter. She just HATES even looking at this book! Do NOT get it for a little girl, eight or even nine. They will find it very inapropriate too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Conversation Starter I really like the approach of this book. It takes girls on a journey from head to toe of changes that can occur during puberty. It is a great way to start a dialog with a preteen who may be a little shy to ask questions. My 10 year old paged through with me and then read in depth. I followed up with her and it was nice for her to say look at this page and I could see what she wanted more info on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Book! I REALLY like this book. It has different sections to read like about Eating Disorders and what to do. It has a lot of good advice about things that girls experience. I also really enjoyed the companions to The Care and Keeping of You, "Is This Normal?, and "The Feelings Book." I really like filling out the little questions and quizzes in "The Care and Keeping of You Journal" and the "Feelings Book Journal."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Book of its Kind! My daughter and I started reading this book together at age 9 and I cannot recommend it enough! Excellent, thorough and age appropriate book. Those who say that it should be 12+ or even 10+ are wrong, most girls ARE developing at a younger age now. I am a Girl Scout leader and I interact with a lot of girls, at age 9 over half of them were wearing bras, some earlier. It is important that girls know what is going on with their bodies so they can be prepared and not scared. This book does so in an appropriate way and is an excellent source for young girls as well as old.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazingly Helpful I spotted this book while wandering though the drug store. My best friend recently lost his wife to cancer and is raising his 14 year old son and 9 year old daughter on his own. After skimming through the book I knew it would be an excellent way for both of them to be prepared for what is to come as she continues to grow and develop. As a future teacher, I would recommend this book to any parent to help their daughter understand how to take care of her health, and to give her a starting point for discussing the changes to her body.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Girls I have four daughters ((oldest to youngest) Anabella, age 11, Missie, age 9, Mollie and Kirstie, age 2 are twins), and Anabella had a friend who got her period when she was 9. I was a real idiot and didn't get this book for her. So when her time rolled around, I was clueless and uncomfortable. But I had learned from my mistakes. So when Missie turned 8, I called all her friends moms and asked them if their daughters have met up with puberty yet. I was happy when they said no, and told them to call me asap when something happened. So I went right out and bought this book. and decided to copy all the pages and make little books of every chapter (book about boobs abd bras, book about periods, ect.), so I could give them to her when one of her friends, or her met up with that part of puberty, because I didn't want her to read the whole book and be totally confused. So I will do everything that I did with Missie with Kirstie and Mollie when the time comes. I hope this review was helpful to everyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great information, graphicness necesarry If you've read all the one-star reviews that say how graphic it is don't be fooled. They're correct. But this information is highly necessary, and it is important for girls to know. I would recommend this book to eleven years and above, but really DO NOT GIVE THIS BOOK TO ANYONE YOUNGER THEN TEN! It's a great book, but for most ten year old girls a lot of this stuff isn't happening yet and some parents would consider it too graphic for their younger kids. However, if you have a eight or nine year old who is maturing very early, I think it's best for them to read this. It informs them about their about their bodies truthfully, and is important, in my opinion, to help them grow up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best My Mom Could Have Given Me I am 22 years old and I still remember the usefulness of this book that my mom got me at 13. It shows step-by-step the things a girl needs to know if her parents don't want to talk about changes or if she's too shy to ask. I remember the most valuable chapter was on inserting a tampon. I turned to this book for everything and cannot imagine trying to figure out the changes my body made without it. I would highly recommend this to any parent/step-parent to get for their little girl.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect book to help me explain things... This book was perfect for me to share with my 9 year old. The reviewer before me that said this book should be rated 12+ was wrong. The average child today starts their cycle before then. My daughter is already going through these changes (breasts, hair, etc). It is so important to give our children the correct and to the point information on these matters. I am a pediatric nurse and could not have explained this stuff better than this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect 4 Puberty This book is perfect for showing girls about growing up, and the challenges ahead. When I first saw it, I thought it was "a lame puberty book with bad pictures of girls" but once I read it, it was perfect! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing worse than..... Okay, my personal opinion as a parent is there is NOTHING worse then a child (when at the appropriate age) to be taught that stuff when it isn't straight forward. This book works so well to teach young girls about puberty! WARNING:::::: Make certain your kids have met the "Age" of when to read this because it can be scary for young girls. but for girls (gave to my child at 9) who think they (with your agreement) are ready should def. read!

It doesn't shy away from answering any and all of a girl's questions about puberty. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book to read WITH your daughter While many have complained that this book was inappropriate, I am a very conservative mother of 5 and felt it was perfect. The drawings are graphic enough that she understood, but still not too much. And the age is perfectly appropriate. Trust me, 8 year olds are going to hear this stuff from their friends and schoolmates really soon if you don't talk about it now. Better to go over it with Mom than someone else. that way when it does come up, they won't be confused or embarrassed. I would recommend reading it WITH your daughter. It might feel awkward at first, but it is a great way to start communication early. My daughter is not afraid to ask me about things she hears now because of it. She is also comfortable talking to me about the changes her body is going through because she knew what to expect ahead of time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for our growing girls I read this before giving to my sister when she was 12 and than my daughter when she was 10. We love the information and my daughter and I read parts together, then she can also read alone. You should always read books before giving to your kids. Other books I have found had too much information for older girls (14-17). Rated 5 out of 5 by from Body book indeed Some of the pictures are a little too showy. But the advice is really good. I think people at least age 9 will understand. I love the book, it teaches you how to take care of yourself. I like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Purchase Ever I bought this book for my daughter after she turned 11. This book was so helpful in guiding her through the changes that was about to happen. She is almost 13 now and still references back to this book. She loves this book and has read it many times.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Alright.. This book is great for kids, but my daughter was embarrassed to read it in front of me or talk about, and I gave it to her almost 4 years later than her friends got it. I think the pictures show a bit too much. Should have read before giving to daughter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent book for young girls! I purchased this book for my 10 year old daughter in the hopes that it would prepare her for the years ahead. I am delighted at the content and illustrations. The book explains everything on a level that is easy for a young girl to understand. This book did an excellent job at preparing my daughter for what to expect as she grows. I would recommend this book to any girl on the brink of "growing up".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pediatrician Recommended At my daughters annual physical her Pediatrician recommended this book! My daughter was 8 years old. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have!!! This book is a must have for girls who are going through puberty. Perhaps it is not very age appropriate for 8-year-old girls... more like 10, maybe. Inside this book is a lot (and I mean a LOT) of information on how girls should look as their bodies are developing, what they should expect, what to do when they get their period, etc. But not all of it is like that. There are also parts about taking care of your face, hair, teeth, and hands, as well as some very helpful tips on shaving, getting rid of underarm/foot odor, and getting enough exercise. This book shows girls how going through puberty is completely normal and expected, and it shows them how their emotions will also be changing. It is also filled with tips and questions from real girls. The illustrations are drawn exceptionally well. The Care And Keeping Of You will definitely make girls more confident about facing puberty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Parenting Tool or guide? My daughter bought this book with her own money, she is 10 years old and hitting puberty now. Some people say that this book is "innapropriate". It is appropriate 100%. It simply and truthfully explains puberty and what happens during it! My daughter LOVES this book and she is always checking her book to read out loud all about her food pyrimid. If your daughter is starting to go through puberty, buy this book!
