Like Wonderland or Oz, Neverland or Narnia, The Celery Forest is an extraordinary world filled with strange creatures and disorienting sights. But the doorway to the Celery Forest is not a rabbit hole or an old wardrobe. The doorway is a mammogram. For poet and novelist Catherine Graham, this is the topsy-turvy world she found herself in after learning she had breast cancer. No longer the world she recognized, the Celery Forest is a place where things are seen and experienced for the first time. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read for Poetry Lovers! This is a compelling and moving book of poetry. The book's cover describes it as "more than a survivor's tale (breast cancer), it is a map through unknown terrain, infused with awareness..." I so agree! These poems, born from the experience of cancer diagnosis, surgeries, test and treatments, transport us to a world where are senses are heightened as they often are in a time of crisis. It is in this state of awareness, that we find ourselves engaged in the details of the world, especially the natural world. The book abounds with startling images of deer, fawn, mole, rabbit, owl, sparrow, gull, egret, pigeon, starling, shrike, vireo, woodchuck, and fireflies. Anyone that has gone through a health crisis will feel less alone after experiencing these poems. As you journey with Catherine Graham through The Celery Forest, you will discover that the forest can be dark at times with many perils but it is also a place abundant with the beauty and mystery of pulsating life. A must read for all poetry lovers!
