Laura Fane has returned to London to collect her inheritance but it isn't the happy moment she anticipated. Her father was expected to marry a cousin but instead fell in love with Laura's mother. Her father has left her everything including the estate that his jilted finacé occupies. She wants Laura to sell her the place so she can leave it to her niece, Tanis.

Laura isn't sure what to do, and when she is summoned to visit Tanis' aunt, she discovers Tanis is manipulative and will do anything to get her way, including blackmailing. When Tanis ends up murdered Miss Silver is on the case and everyone is a suspect.

About Patricia Wentworth & Miss Maud Silver
Patricia Wentworth was the pseudonym of Dora Amy Dillon Turnbull, nee Elles who was born in India in 1878. She published her first novel in 1910, ‘A Marriage Under the Terror’, set in the French Revolution, which won the Melrose prize. It was the start of a prolific writing career although she was best known for her crime series featuring former governess turned private investigator, Miss Silver. The first of these, ‘The Grey Mask’ was published in 1928, two years before Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple made her first appearance in ‘The Murder at the Vicarage’. These two protagonists share many of the same characteristics – love of knitting, listening to village gossip and in cahoots with the national if not local police. However, Maud's definitely a professional. And none of that "Oh, I'm just a wooly-headed female" schtick of Miss Marple.
