"Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear." I Have hitherto used this passage of Scripture more as a motto, than as a text; and have rather adapted it to the subject which I had in view, than opened its meaning, and applied its precept to your own case: but I should very imperfectly perform my duty were I to leave the subject there. I propose, with God's help and blessing, to make a more special application of it, and in doing this I shall, I hope, be able to mention one or two subjects of importance which were omitted on former occasions. And one thing which I may mention at once, and which is in fact the introduction to what I have to say, is the importance of bearing in mind that truth which St. Paul lays down in his Epistle to the Romans, "they are not all Israel, which are of Israel."1 In stating the answer which we might give to the question, "why are you a Churchman?" I spoke entirely of the visible Church, and more especially that branch of it, to which we belong, called the Church of England, which is defined, as I told you, in the Article, as "a congregation of faithful men," that is, of men professing the true faith, "in which the pure Word of God is preached, "and the sacraments be duly ministered, according "to Christ's ordinance, in all those things, that of "necessity are requisite to the same." There is another definition incidentally given in the prayer, "for all sorts and conditions of men," in which we pray for the good estate of the Catholic Church, that it may be so guided and governed by God's Holy Spirit, "that all who profess and call themselves...
