The Church, both in the Lessons and Gospel, preaches to us the ascension of Christ in the type and antitype. In the Epistle we are taught not to satisfy ourselves with wondering at the miracle, but to take heed that we conduct ourselves in such a manner that at his second coming, we may behold him with comfort and confidence. The first Lesson for the Morning contains an account of Moses going up into the Mount, to recover the tables of the Covenant and deliver them again to the Jews. Our blessed Lord, when he ascended up on high, led captivity captive, and gave the gifts of his Holy Spirit to the men of his own choice that they should publish the new law to the world. The second Lesson relates the accomplishment of that which the former was the type. The translation of Elijah forms the subject of the first Lesson for the Evening; and the second Lesson, as the Gospel had previously done in the Morning, instructs us what practical improvement to make of the great event which we are celebrating. The Proper Psalms are easy of application, and tend, as the Psalms invariably do, to quicken and elevate our devotion, and so to exalt and spiritualize our desires. The following extract from that forcible writer, Bishop Hall, is too valuable to be suppressed:--" There are three bodily inhabitants of heaven, Enoch, Elijah, our Saviour Christ: the first, before the Law; the second, under the Law; the third under the Gospel: all three in a several form of translation.
