The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases In A World Out Of Balance is rated 5 out of 5 by 1.
Unpurified drinking water. Improper use of antibiotics. Local warfare. Massive refugee migration. Changing social and environmental conditions around the world have fostered the spread of new and potentially devastating viruses and diseases—HIV, Lassa, Ebola, and others. Laurie Garrett takes you on a fifty-year journey through the world's battles with microbes and examines the worldwide conditions that have culminated in recurrent outbreaks of newly discovered diseases, epidemics of diseases migrating to new areas, and mutated old diseases that are no longer curable. She argues that it is not too late to take action to prevent the further onslaught of viruses and microbes, and offers possible solutions for a healthier future.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A warning bell tolls... A warning bell tolls for all humans. Can enough of us hear it in time? We are quickly killing our ecosystems with poisonous chemicals, the clear cutting of trees, poaching of animals - the total destruction of species of flora and fauna. The earth will only accept so much abuse and it has decided to fight back with a full arsenal of mutating pathogens - deadly disease causing microorganisms. This is a true, sobering account of the research of hot viruses and microbiology in the last fifty years. The book covers more than HIV, hemorrhagic/hanta viruses, exotic influenzas, genetic engineering, drug resistant bacteria/parasites and the changing social, economic, and environmental conditions that we have caused to throw the world out of balance. Garrett's stories are fascinating with rich detail and they command readers to fathom our own part in the creation of newly emerging diseases.
