Rated 5 out of 5 by from A work for the ages If you do not yet wish to invest in the 20 volume Oxford set but are looking for a nevertheless comprehensive work, this is the dictionary for you. One partcularly pleasing aspect of this dictionary is the inclusion of obsolete or archaic words. I was delighted to find the Old English word "eac", meaning "also" listed with an example of use. This double function as a historical reference makes this book a must buy for linguists who do not yet have a large reference work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Oxford English Dictionary Have you ever stumbled across a word that you had never heard before? The Oxford English Dictionary is, in my opinion, the single most valuable resource when searching for the etymology, classic and current definitions of any word in the english language. You can be quite certain that if a word is not in this dictionary, then it is either not a proper word, or simply not correct. An absolute must have for the literary-hungry individuals who are not satisfied until they understand what they read. Put this one on your shelf with the Encyclopeadia Britanica for a complete reference collection.

From Our Editors

Even if you've been speaking English all your life and consider yourself to be an expert, you're still going to come across the odd word you don't know. Be prepared for the inevitable by keeping The Compact Oxford English Dictionary close at hand. After all, when it comes to English, spellings and meanings are anyone's guess; antidisestablishmentarianism doesn't spell itself; restive means exactly the opposite of what you think; and chances are you're using 'presently' incorrectly presently - er, currently. This dictionary is a compacted form of the most complete dictionaries of the English language you can buy: because nine of the original pages fit on one of these, use the accompanying magnifying glass to read the definitions.
