The Conditions of Agricultural Growth remains a break through in the theory of agricultural development. In linking ethnography with economy, developmental studies reached new heights. Whereas "development" had been seen previously as the transformation of traditional communities by the introduction (or imposition) of new technologies, Boserup argues that changes and improvements occur from within agricultural communities, and that improvements are governed not simply by external interference, but by those communities themselves.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very unhelpful format; where are the page numbers? Paid a lot of money for this rather than getting it from the university library. Very unfriendly for reading for academic purposes: no page numbers! No copying of quotes. Very slow indeed to move to the next page. I'd accept all this in a freebie but not in a fully paid-for book.
