about

The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel written by famous French author Alexandre Dumas. The story was completed in 1844 and it is one of the most popular works by Dumas all over the world along with The Three Musketeers. Like many of his works this one was created on the basis of the plot suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet. The story takes place in such countries as France and Italy, and also on the islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of 1815-1838. It begins in the times of so called Hundred Days of Napoleon and goes through the reign of Lois-Philippe of France. The story is about the imprisoned man, who escapes from jail and is willing to avenge people who imprisoned him. The author touches upon the themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy and forgiveness, loyalty, betrayal and selfishness. They are revealed throughout the story as the characters slowly understand their true nature. The book is considered to be classic nowadays and includes history as a major element.
