Sebastian Malheur is the most dangerous sort of rake: an educated one. When he’s not scandalizing ladies in the bedchamber, he’s outraging proper society with his scientific theories. He’s desired, reviled, acclaimed, and despised—and he laughs through it all.

Violet Waterfield, the widowed Countess of Cambury, on the other hand, is entirely respectable, and she’d like to stay that way. But Violet has a secret that is beyond ruinous, one that ties her irrevocably to England’s most infamous scoundrel: Sebastian’s theories aren’t his. They’re hers.

So when Sebastian threatens to dissolve their years-long conspiracy, she’ll do anything to save their partnership...even if it means opening her vulnerable heart to the rake who could destroy it for good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smart and Witty The dialogue and the characters are witty, fun, irresistible and likeable. What more do you need? A strong female lead character and a thoughtful gentlemanly male character can only be the best kind of romance!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More than a historical romance Courtney Milan pays tribute to early women scientists whose noble work frequently went uncredited and unremarked upon. Against that backdrop, I found her portrayal of the best friends to couple romance of the two protagonists quietly moving and poignantly inspiring, in the lengths they go to protect each other.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Read! I found these books entirely by accident but I am thoroughly pleased to have found them they are marvelously insightful and extremely well researched. Both of these traits combine to form a delicious story of both heart and mind and does not forget the body. It is also a wonderful examination of what it means to be strong and smart and a woman in a time where those things were especially seen as negative traits and how they can triumph through it all. Add to that male characters who are men in the best sense of the word, who are restricted by the world's expectations, the same as the women and yet who also find a way to be who they most want to be. ALL of these books are well worth the read and the purchase to support this author and so far Violet and Sebastian are my favorite characters yet. If you buy only one book this year, buy this one.
