Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better Than Gone Girl The Couple Next Door is an excellent thriller. I liked this novel more than Gone Girl. This thriller has more twists and turns. The novel challenges the reader to carefully choose which characters to trust and which characters to be skeptical of. The author will keep you guessing until the last chapter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING I loved this book from start to finish. I have passed it along to all my friends who enjoy thrillers and suspense. If you are looking for a book that grabs your attention right at the beginning, this is the one for you. I am not a huge reader, but this book i could not put down. Finished it within a couple days, every page is more intense.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Plot A couple goes to a neighbour’s dinner party, leaving their infant daughter asleep at home alone. They have a baby monitor with a broken screen and a plan to take turns going home every 1/2 hour to check on her. Unfortunately, when they return home for the night at 1:30am they find their front door ajar and their baby girl missing. The hunt for their daughter begins, and it is complicated from the start. In this book, there are characters hiding secrets, characters with devious motivations, and characters with pretty severe mental issues. Lots to keep you guessing! I thoroughly enjoyed this one. 4 Stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but Predictable Great read but pretty predictable. Still overall a page turner!
Date published: 2017-08-02
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick Read While On the Beach My Husband and I read this by passing back and forth while on our Honeymoon. I was hesitant that the feminine nature of the story would lose his interest, but the turns and twists of the story kept him captivated and interested and gave us lots to discuss while watching the waves crash upon the beautiful beach. A few unanswered questions at the end, but otherwise an easy read for when you don't want to think too much.
Date published: 2017-08-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pulled an all nighter This novel really pulled me and I needed to know what happened. So much so, that I pulled an all nighter to finish the book. If you like mysteries this book is worth the read.
Date published: 2017-07-31
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good not amazing I enjoyed the book as the plot played out, the ending was okay but should have ended without the extra add on that made it stupid. Semi predictable story. Still a good read, but not my favourite.
Date published: 2017-07-28
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A fast paced book that was't enough This book was okay. While the book did have its share of twists and turns, I couldn't help but feel that something was missing. I could tell Anne was a devoting mother but I just felt like she was too emotional sometimes....bordering on annoying. This book was definitely a quick read bit I felt like it was missing something...can't quite put my finger on it. The ending was probably my favourite and it would have been interesting for the author to go more into Cynthia and Graham and their bizarre marriage.
Date published: 2017-07-27
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A page turner This book drew me in from the start. It was an intriguing story, an easy read, and had many twists and turns to keep me interested. It was easy to determine the kidnapper towards the end but the book was still a 'wow' in my opinion. A great page turner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's a page turner! I bought this book a couple of months ago and i find this book a page turner i could not put the book down! i enjoyed reading this book that as i was reading this book i can see this being a movie someday. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good mystery, kept me turning the pages! I do like good mystery books, where the hints keep making me putting the pieces together to try and figure out the plot. I did like that I had my Awwww moment half way through the book. In mystery novels, you normally get that awww moment towards the end, when you figure out the killer. But half way through was a surprise and it kept me turning the pages until the end. It wasn't the best mystery novel (some of the story line is far fetched), but for entertaining purposes and a good read, it did it's job!
Date published: 2017-07-25
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A book for mystery lovers. I just finished reading this book and let me tell you, one of the best mystery and thriller books ever. The ending was totally mind blowing and I definitely loved the characters. I gave this book 4/5 because of the writing style, which is not that great but not that bad either. Well in my opinion I would like to have a different writing style but in this case it's okay. Start reading this book and prepare your self for an amazing ride of mystery and betrayal. #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This is supposed to be a page-turner?! This one gets 2 stars, and just barely. THE PROS: 1. This novel was a very quick read. I began this morning, and managed to read at least a third of it while waiting for my doctor to get to me over 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment. But I digress. 2. When we officially found out who removed the baby from the house, we can't help but think that this person is stupid, selfish, and reckless, but we also feel just slightly bad about the circumstances and recognize that despite this horrible mistake, he/she isn't a bad person. The fact that we feel this way demonstrates at least some success on the author's part. 3. Anne and Marco's reactions are very human. 4. Really interesting premise. 5. Compulsively readable. I had to find out if there was suddenly this incredible ending that made all of the following utterly worth it. THE CONS: 1. Regardless of everything else, these people left a 6-month-old baby alone from 7pm until well after midnight?! I don't care if you check in every FIFTEEN minutes instead of their thirty. I don't care if you tape the baby monitor to your chest for the entire night. No loving parent (and Anne and Marco do love Cora deeply) in their right mind would ever do that. Leave her alone to check the mailbox outside? Sure. Leave her alone while paying the pizza delivery guy? Yeah. But leaving her and going to a dinner party next door? This is by far the least believable part of this book. I mean, come on. 2. Everything is so incredibly convoluted that you can't help but wonder if the other kept trying to write her way out of the corners she kept creating. You kind of want to kick all of these people for being complete morons. Apparently wealth and ivy-league educations are not guarantees against stupidity (unsurprising, but you expect these characters to be at least slightly less insipid given their respective backgrounds). 3. The last 3 or 4 pages, despite having been built up for 3/4 of the book are so far-fetched. After everything Anne has been through, it's just not believable. Not then, not in that context. 4. Cynthia is a terrible human being. We're pretty much sure of this from the start. Yeah, whatever. But the way the author keeps bashing on her for childlessness-by-choice life is insulting and so damn repetitive. As a person who fully intends on having children one day, I can't help but speak up. Women have the right to have or not have children as they so choose, and everyone else needs to STFU about it. Cynthia's issues with kids are weirdly central to this book in a way that is completely unnecessary for the story. I have no problem with Cynthia being a villain of sorts. I do have a problem with her villain-hood being linked to something that is a personal choice for many people that has absolutely nothing to do with their character or value as a human being. 5. I predicted every single thing. The whos, the hows, the whys. All of it. Easily and from right near the beginning. The cons outweigh the pros here.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall, It's a Good Read I thought that overall this book was quite good. I am a sucker for a good mystery/suspense novel and I must say that this book did hit those marks. However, what I will also say is this, it did become a little bit flat by the end. I was surprised by the twist that came which was nice. Also, there was too much telling going on which, I feel, distracted me from being able to fully immerse myself into this novel. I did enjoy it quite a bit though.
Date published: 2017-07-18
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fell Flat I really, really wanted to enjoy this book! But the ending was obvious and I really didn't care what happened to any of the characters in the book, except the missing baby girl.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wow Wonderful and riveting psychological thriller. From the first chapter, it will grab your interest and it's something you won't put down. Till the end, you won't be able to find out what's happening. Absolutely amazing ! **FIVE STARS - A MUST READ**
Date published: 2017-07-04
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Predictable The author gives it away too quickly. Rather than leave the reader in suspense for a dramatic ending, the plot becomes very predictable with every turn of the page. It's an easy read and if you're looking to pass time, then I recommend it. If you're looking for a real page turner that'll have you thinking long after you've read the book, then this isn't it. The moment I turned the last page, I forgot about it and moved on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic read! A fantastic read! Suspenseful and fast-paced from beginning to end
Date published: 2017-06-03
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some twists, some turns, mostly predictable. I thought the plot was interesting. How the author set up the detective to know how everything went down, just without the intricate details. However, I was waiting for the BIG reveal that just never happened. I didn't find myself in suspense like I have with many other readalikes (I Let You Go, Pretty Girls, Woman in Cabin 10, etc.).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read Since Gone Girl and Girl on the Train, I have been chasing the next best thrill novel. Although I wouldn't put this quite at the same caliber as the above mentioned books, this was very good. The book kept twisting and turning and made you keep guessing the whole way through. I wasn't a huge fan of how it ended, but overall this book was very well done. #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not like it The book was extremely predictable in my opinion. The characters felt stupid and kept doing infuriating things and making bad decisions. It reads easily though, I got through it in 2 or 3 days.
Date published: 2017-05-25
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well written but predictable I liked this novel, and I thought it would take me a few days to get through. It only took me about 2 days, reading sparingly. The story is a bit disjointed, and can be predictable at times, but there is a good buildup of suspense.
Date published: 2017-05-24
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not memorable It was a good read, but nothing out of the ordinary. A little predictable and not one of the best story lines.

It was gritty, desperate and heart-wrenching. Just when I thought I had it all figured it, another twist came along and blew me out of the water, especially the ending - I was not expecting that!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book I enjoyed this book - it got a little weird at times - but I found it very predictable - although partly because I had just read "shes not there", which is a similar story about a baby going missing after the parents left it alone and checked on it every half hour - so I kind of had a bit of deja vu when I read it. Overall I think it is a good read and similar to the girl on the train, so if you like those suspenseful but little bit predictable books then go for it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Read Although Predictable It was a good read however I was hoping for more of an unpredictable plot twist. The ending was slightly surprising, however, the main storyline was easily recognizable from the beginning. Still remains a good book though, enjoyable and absorbing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Kept you on your toes every page! The issue I find with most books is that they are boring at the beginning, but NOT this book! Within the first couple pages this book instantly hooks you in. I didn't find any of the characters relatable nor was I rooting for any of them, but thats actually what made me like the book ever more. I was hooked and finished the book in one day when I was on vacation only bad part was the last couple pages, seemed like the author almost rushed to finish the story. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from COULDN'T STOP READING Sometimes you just need an entertaining novel with a good plot and lots of twists to keep you going. This book started out predictable and completely surprised me about a quarter of the way through when things turned out not-so-predictable and the plot thickened! A purely enjoyable read that I would definitely recommend to all Girl on the Train and Gone-Girl fans alike!

I did not want to put this book down, and each chapter got better! Finished the book in 4 days, and that's only because I paced myself. I definitely recommend it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good story, badly written. The story was good and I really enjoyed the fact that the suspense started right away in the first few chapters. However, I hated the way it was written. Just plain bad, this is the only thing that really turned me off about this novel. It really bothered me to the point of thinking of just putting it down completely because of just how BAD it is written. Coming from an english teacher (author), really disappointing. However yes, story was good and a page turner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Do you really know who lives beside you? I read The Couple Next Door for the Indigo book club in February 2017. I have to say I am hooked on these types of stories right now - The Girl on the Train, The Woman in Cabin 10, Gone Girl etc. The suspenseful, thriller mystery that has a lot of psychological aspects to it seem to be everywhere and I am just loving them. This book starts out where you honestly think what are these new parents thinking, only to have the author take you on a crazy journey of wondering who did it and really why would they do it. I don't want to give away any of the story so I will review mainly the authors writing style and characters in this book. The main two characters are Anne and Marco. From the beginning I really like Anne but I am not sure about Marco. I keep my distance, then a little later on I wonder what is going on with the couple next door. Is Marco having an affair with Cynthia? I see a couple struggling with the joys of a new baby and mom having postpartum depression but would they harm their own child. The author gets right into the story and takes us on a roller coaster ride, will you predict what the end will be? I was glued to the book. The story keeps a nice pace throughout where I was totally engaged in the story. I didn't see all the surprises coming and was left thinking, wow, really. I can't wait to read more from Shari Lapena. I give The Couple Next Door a 4 out of 5 Stars. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down! I purchased this book as one of my vacation reads. I sat down one night and had it finished by the next day (didn't make it on my trip). I was hooked from the first chapter and loved every twist and turn. Predictable? A little, but it was the type of thrilling easy read I was looking for. I've passed it along to two family members to read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Predictable Very well written, very intruiging but I found it was easy to guess who was the kidnapper. She made it too easy to piece together myself without reading on. All in all though, was a very good booked. Took me a day to read!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from painful to get through i had bought this book 8 months ago, thinking it'd be a fast read. i finally finished it and let me tell you, it was brutal. it was predictable, i thought the storyline was everywhere, and once you started reading a new chapter, sometimes it felt like you missed a few of the narration that should have existed between the characters. super jumpy, and not at all suspenseful. just don't buy it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Predictable but good read! I really enjoyed this story and for the first half was left wondering what had actually happened. The suspense was well drawn out and even though it took a predictable turn, it was still enjoyable. I wish the ending had been a little different. It felt hurried and rushed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick read A simple yet compelling read, easily read in half a day. I sure wouldn't want to be part of that super-crazy, messed-up family. Just read it to see what I mean! I enjoyed the whole book, up until the ending. That was a pretty unsatisfying and slightly confusing conclusion. Also, I think the title is a bit misleading, and should have taken a bit more thought.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent mystery This story was very well written. As I read each chapter, I got more excited to keep reading. I had no idea who the kidnapper really was until the end of the book. Marco and Anne really played their parts as worried parents, very well. I would definitely recommend this as a "must read" book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down This book was insane. From the very first page I knew I was going to love it, and I just couldn't put it down. Every chapter had me hooked and all I wanted to do all day was stay home and keep reading. It's a very easy and fast paced read, with some "omg"/"wtf" moments. The ending was a bit off, but understandable. Could possibly be hinting at a sequel?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from so-so I'm not sure if it is just the books that I have been picking but the plot line involving a child going missing seems to be very common this year. The book was ok - not good enough to recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast Paced This was a very fast-paced mystery/suspense novel. It does have you guessing for at least the first half, although I had pieced it together somewhat by that point. Regardless of that, it was written in such a way that kept me riveted until the last page. I will definitely keep my eyes out for any upcoming books from this author and I do recommend this for a fun, exciting read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Keep Your Mind Spinning Book I expected this book to be like all the others, although it was great. The beginning scenario gives it the first twist and as they clues are getting put together you are getting more confused. Finally when you think you have it all figured it, you realize you only had half of it figured out. Great read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Entertaining weekend read This started off suspenseful; a missing baby, frantic parents, bizarre relationship with the neighbours, tension with the in-laws and the uncertainty of what happened. Then way too early on the plot is revealed. I was left knowing how the story ends long before the end with a couple of minor twists thrown in for added interest.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very predictable Books like these are touch and go. Either you love them or your don't because it's so predictable that you can't even enjoy the story. This book is one of those. Fairly early on, you know who did it and it ruined it for me because I wanted to take a guess and be surprised. This book should've been entitled ___ Did It! because it's that obvious. I didn't hate this book but a strong dislike is more like it. The writing and characters were good but the plot wasn't shocking or thrilling..

Read from the Book

Anne reaches clumsily for her cell phone on the dining table and checks the time. It is almost one o’clock in the morning. She’d checked on the baby at midnight. Marco had gone to check on her at twelve thirty. Then he’d gone out for a cigarette on the back patio with Cynthia, while Anne and Graham sat rather awkwardly at the littered dining table, making stilted conversation. She should have gone out to the backyard with them; there might have been a breeze. But she hadn’t, because Graham didn’t like to be around cigarette smoke, and it would have been rude, or at least inconsiderate, to leave Graham there all alone at his own dinner party. So for reasons of propriety, she had stayed. Graham, a WASP like herself, is impeccably polite. Why he married a tart like Cynthia is a mystery. Cynthia and Marco had come back in from the patio a few minutes ago, and Anne desperately wants to leave, even if everyone else is still having fun.She glances at the baby monitor sitting at the end of the table, its small red light glowing like the tip of a cigarette. The video screen is smashed—she’d dropped it a couple of days ago and Marco hadn’t gotten around to replacing it yet—but the audio is still working. Suddenly she has doubts, feels the wrongness of it all. Who goes to a dinner party next door and leaves her baby alone in the house? What kind of mother does such a thing? She feels the familiar agony set in—she is not a good mother. So what if the sitter canceled? They should have brought Cora with them, put her in her portable playpen. But Cynthia had said no children. It was to be an adult evening, for Graham’s birthday. Which is another reason Anne has come to dislike Cynthia, who was once a good friend—Cynthia is not baby-friendly. Who says that a six-month-old baby isn’t welcome at a dinner party? How had Anne ever let Marco persuade her that it was okay? It was irresponsible. She wonders what the other mothers in her moms’ group would think if she ever told them. We left our six-month-old baby home alone and went to a party next door. She imagines all their jaws dropping in shock, the uncomfortable silence. But she will never tell them. She’d be shunned. She and Marco had argued about it before the party. When the sitter called and canceled, Anne had offered to stay home with the baby—she hadn’t wanted to go to the dinner anyway. But Marco was having none of it. “You can’t just stay home,” he insisted when they argued about it in their kitchen. “I’m fine staying home,” she said, her voice lowered. She didn’t want Cynthia to hear them through the shared wall, arguing about going to her party. “It will be good for you to get out,” Marco countered, lowering his own voice. And then he’d added, “You know what the doctor said.”
