An instant New York Times and Globe and Mail bestseller. Look out for Shari Lapena's next thriller, A Stranger in the House, coming August 2017.

"Meticulously crafted and razor-sharp. The Couple Next Door lingers long after you turn the final page." —Harlan Coben, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fool Me Once

A domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors—a twisty, rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal and the secrets between husbands and wives. . . .

How well do you know the couple next door? Or your husband? Or even—yourself?
Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all—a loving relationship, a wonderful home and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately focuses on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story.
Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they've kept for years.
What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family—a chilling tale of deception, duplicityand unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist.
SHARI LAPENA worked as a lawyer and as an English teacher before turning to writing fiction. She has written two award-winning literary novels, and The Couple Next Door is her suspense debut.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read I really enjoyed reading this book, yet something was still lacking. I found the plot to be predictable but I kept reading just to confirm that the kidnapper was indeed who i thought it was. Good read..I recommend getting the paperback version (cheaper)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick, Gripping Read I finished this book so quickly because I couldn't stand not knowing who had done what. A really good read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely LOVE this book! One of the best books I have read in a long time! So excited for her next book to come out! This book kept me guessing and shocked throughout this intense page turner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Twists and Turns Great read! The storyline seemed farfetched initially, however as the story progresses the twists and turns begin which lead to a satisfying conclusion. A must read for those into thrillers!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth a read This novel was easy to read and enjoyable, despite not containing anything groundbreaking, and having a very predictable plot.
Date published: 2018-04-28
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty Good At first I found the plot kind of stupid. Why would you leave a 6 month old baby alone at home anyway??? But after reading the entire book it's actually not that bad, it gets better and what happens at the end is quite entertaining. I wish the beginning was a bit more interesting though still a good read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gripping! Love a good book with a good twist, definitely recommend this one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE! This booked hooked me from the start. I loved the twists and turns and especially the ending. I was so happy with how the story turned out in the end :) The couple next door was way better than A Stranger in the House, another book by Shari Lapena. Still not liking the he said, she said etc, but it was a much better read than A Stranger in the House.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Totally Consuming! This book surprised me! I started reading because I wanted a "mindless distraction" type book. However - I was pretty much hooked from the get go. The characters are relatable, and while I was expecting a twist (that seems to be the trend these days) the final twist wasn't completely transparent right away and had me second guessing myself. Would definitely recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down I couldn't put this book down once I started. It was frustrating in parts, but a great twist.
Date published: 2018-04-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could not put down This book was very engaging, and once I started reading, I could not put it down! Very well written, and the ending was not predictable.
Date published: 2018-04-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gripping I bought this book after reading her other book, A Stranger In The House, and once again I could not put it down. What seems to make obvious sense, turns out to be false. The last 50 pages or so really throws you through a loop. You won't want to it put it down till you figure out what happens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down.. Super suspenseful, i finished this book in only a few days. Lots of twists and turns.
Date published: 2018-04-10
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Easy Read I was genuinely surprised when the kidnapper was revealed but it was done in such a lacklustre way I found it hard to continue afterwards. Overall a relatively slow book but interesting enough to be enjoyable.
Date published: 2018-04-06
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little weak I expected something similar to the Girl on The Train, but was disappointed. Did not sympathize to the main characters, and the story outcome wasn’t very impressive.
Date published: 2018-04-02
Rated 3 out of 5 by from An ok read The story was well written. However, there was no real twists for me in this book. It was all very obvious and I guessed the plot twists before they happened. But even so, I did enjoy the story and the characters themselves.
Date published: 2018-03-31
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick Read This book was one that I read in the start of my thriller/mystery binge read, and I would say that it was one that got me hooked. It was a quick, engaging and hook sinking read. The book keeps you guessing with each turn of the page, and leaves you disappointed when it's over. Highly recommend to friends!
Date published: 2018-03-31
Rated 2 out of 5 by from No This book has a few twists but the ending is predictable and once you know who the culprit is, why continue on!
Date published: 2018-03-13
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great debut thriller! 3.5 stars. Fast-paced thriller with a few good twists that kept me guessing what was to come. I didn't care for the ending, another chapter would have helped wrap up the story.
Date published: 2018-03-12
Rated 3 out of 5 by from good book, a little predictable good book, a little predictable... although apparently I am very good at guessing "who did it!"
Date published: 2018-03-12
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick and Enjoyable Read This book is a quick and easy read. The author wastes no time getting into the story. Although the book is somewhat predictable it is well worth the read.
Date published: 2018-03-10
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Boring read The story was slow and predictable. I forced myself to read it because I had paid for it. Disappointing.
Date published: 2018-03-09
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST book ever! As soon as I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. It is so good. Keeps you on your toes that entire time.. just wondering.. never a dull moment. It's like watching a movies, only a book.

Date published: 2018-03-05

Date published: 2018-03-02
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Had to fishing in one day! Was edge of my seat, big page turner! Kept me interested to see who the kidnapper was until it became more predictable as I read. But overall a good read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A weekend away turned up tangled in this thriller This book was great, kept me on edge the entire time. This book pulled me in right from the moment I saw the cover. I'm picky when it comes to investing my time into a good book and this captured me from the second I saw it on the shelf. Recommended to all my friends and fellow book-worms.
Date published: 2018-02-15
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quick and easy read Quick and easy read; enough to keep you interested plot wise. Beach read, for sure.
Date published: 2018-02-13
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, But Not Great It could've been better! There was so much hype surrounding this book and I thought it was going to have a crazy plot twist but it was a little predictable. Nevertheless, it was a good book to read and at times a bit thrilling.
Date published: 2018-02-10
Rated 1 out of 5 by from UGH. This book was shit; I have zero idea how it's gotten its ragings. I'm leaving that autocorrected to "ragings" instead of "ratings" because IT MADE ME ANGRY. The story could have been compelling, if they didn't (kind of) give away the answer to the mystery a quarter of the way in. By the time it fully finished unravelling near the end, I was just plain bored. On top of that, the writing was blah, weak, and repetitive - not at all beautiful or captivating.
Date published: 2018-02-09
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not deep but hard to put down The plain writing style contrasts with the twists of the plot in this story about family secrets and greed.
Date published: 2018-02-05
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meh I had great expectations for this book, really I did. The description made it seem so good, but the only reason I finished was to see how bad can this book really get. The language was so boring and not incising at all! It but such a bore, and something could have been really good here if only it were written better. The plot was decent, no complaints there. Suspenseful? Yes....maybe? You see, it could've been really suspenseful but sometimes at points where is was meant to be a high, it really disappointed. Still worth checking out if that's what you're into.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved it!! Coming from a not often reader! I reallyyy loved this book - so much so that I passed it on to 2 friends right after I was finished reading. I am not much of a reader but the twists kept me interested and wanting to know more! I wish the ending wasn't as predictable but overall an amazing book!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Interesting read! The book had me from the very first page, it was intense, confusing, thrilling, and kept you turning the page. I just didn't like the ending!
Date published: 2018-01-21
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unexpected Twists! This book kept me up for a couple nights. The story was really interesting, and I got hooked right from the start. There were several unexepcted twists throughout the book. The pace was fast enough for me to keep me thrilled. I'm giving this book 5 stars because there never was a dull moment for me, which happens rarely. I was satisfied with the ending because there was some sort of adrenaline rush right up to the very last word. I thought the story was sufficiently built up for the big reveal, and the actual big reveal was not rushed. I might try to read other works of S. Lapena.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!! I loved it! I love this book so much, the cover caught my eye instantly! I first saw this book on my grandmothers picnic table out at the lake and knew it was going to be a book I wanted to read. I loved it within the first few pages, catches your attention quick, doesn't let you want to put it down... You would like this book if you want to read a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time and then with a twist! Thanks for the good read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A total page turner This book is great suspense story, a total page turner. I read this book literally in a day. Loved the storyline and the suspense created. Date published: 2018-01-11
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved this book--finally, a good thriller! I really enjoyed reading this book and did not find it predictable at all. I have found the story and the writing different from any other mystery books I have been reading lately.
Date published: 2018-01-09
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I'd heard good things about this book but it did not live up to any of them. The writing was predictable and simplistic, the plot scattered and shallow, and representation of mental illness was truly horrid and misguided. There weren't "twists... as fast as you can turn the pages" but rather disconnected events, poor character development, and very little in the way of creative language. I love a good thriller, but this book was not that. I'm disappointed that this was a suggested read by Indigo. You should know better.
Date published: 2018-01-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't Put The Book Down A lot of reviews are saying that it is very predicable but to be honest it's not. The book has you constantly guessing who you can and cannot trust. I read the book within a couple of days while I was on vacation and it was very suspenseful but in a good way. The POV of the characters constantly switch which is interesting to read but can be confusing. I would definitely recommend this book to someone!
Date published: 2018-01-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite book This book is what got me back into reading. Amazing plot, that gets you hooked right from the beginning. Could not put this book down.
Date published: 2018-01-06
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Predictable But Still Interesting This book was okay – I felt it didn’t go deep enough and I felt that the changes of POV didn’t exactly work. The husband’s POV at the start strongly contradicts later events. (Trying not to be too specific as I don’t want to spoil this book for anyone that does want to read it.) I feel it would have been better if the husband’s POV was honest right from the get-go. I also feel they could have gone deeper with Anne’s back story and struggles of being a new mother. It was an easy read, a little predictable at times, but still okay. A good book to pass the time (traveling/at the beach/etc.)
Date published: 2018-01-04
Rated 3 out of 5 by from it was ok This book was ok, easy to read, easy to follow. A little predictable in my opinion.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it Quick and easy read. Keeps you on the edge of your seat
Date published: 2017-12-29
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Predictable and poor writing While the idea of the story was good, I found it very predictable and I couldn't stand the writing. "Anne walked to the table. Anne sat at the table. Anne likes the table"
Date published: 2017-12-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing all the way until the end this book kept me on edge all the way until the end, definitely kept me second guessing and trying to figure out the solution. There are so many twists and turns- it is so good all the way to the end.
Date published: 2017-12-27
Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok This book was really good. I was in a really bad book hangover and this was perfect. The world building and the world in general was amazing

Date published: 2017-12-21
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read Wasn't sure how the author could make this story happen but they did and it was a good mystery.
Date published: 2017-12-20
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent book A little slow at times, but the little surprises keep you attached.
Date published: 2017-12-18
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Suspenseful! From the first chapter I was hooked on this book! Marco and Anne Conti have a six month old daughter. They are invited to their next door neighbour's house. The couple next door, Cynthia and Graham are celebrating Graham's birthday. Anne is not interested in going at all, she would rather stay home. Cynthia did not want children at the party. Marco convinces her and the two decide to check on their daughter Cora every 30 minutes. They finally head home at 1:30 AM and discover Cora has been kidnapped. Detective Rashbach and Jennings are called to the case. The story is told through the perspectives of Anne, Marco, Alice and Richard (Anne's mother and stepfather) and Detective Rashback, with brief passages from Cynthia. I like the way the story unfolded through these different perspectives. We learn more about the night in question and the secrets of each character are revealed. Anne has postpartum depression. She is really struggling with motherhood. She blames Marco, but mostly herself for agreeing to leave Cora alone. Both she and Marco got very drunk that night. Anne comes from money - her parents are worth roughly $15 million - and they've never liked Marco, they never thought he was good enough. Alice is kind, supportive and has more money than her husband Richard, whose status and wealth mean everything to him. He openly despises Marco and blames him. Detective Rashbach is a person you cannot easily read. He has been a detective for a long time and nothing surprises him anymore. He immediately suspects the parents and there is truth to his theory. We learn Marco's business was in trouble. He even mortgaged the house because he over extended himself. We learn Anne was diagnosed with dissociative disorder as a young child. She has small periods of blackouts where she doesn't remember what happened. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. With Shari's books no one is who they claim to be. The story lagged in a few places, but you'll want to read until you find out what happens and there are enough revelations that keep you captivated until the end.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent Light Read I'm a bit torn, as I did read the book all the way through and quickly, but in the end it was unsatisfying. The result is somewhat predictable, although the author throws in a few unnecessary weird twists. But generally ok, until the end could have been better thought out. I would give it a 3 1/2 if I could.
Date published: 2017-12-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast Read Good fast read, unexpected ending.. would recommend if you enjoy thrillers
Date published: 2017-12-07
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Predictable mystery I don’t mind that I am not surprised who committed the crime just that there are no likeable characters.
Date published: 2017-12-06
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thrilling! One of the best books I've read all year- and all my friends agree. From the beginning it gets your attention and stays that way all the way through. Could not put it down!
Date published: 2017-11-30
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Predictable / Page Turner Still I'm 50/50 on this one b/c it was predictable BUT ... it still kept me reading and turning the pages, so a good beach read I would think as I read it during the bustle of prepping for Christmas shopping.

Date published: 2017-11-17

Date published: 2017-11-09
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent thriller, but forgettable This was an addicting read and it was so easy to not put down, but ultimately there's nothing special about it. The way it's written is very simple and straightforward, and the story was interesting, but I wasn't left feeling very satisfied at the end. I just didn't find it exciting enough I guess. There are better thrillers out there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Who did it? This was a lot of fun. Coming up to the end of every chapter I thought I knew for sure who did it, and then the last sentence would turn everything around. The market is getting a little saturated with these kinds of stories, but if you pick up any of them this should be the one!

I picked this one up and although it isn't what I thought it would be... it turned out amazinggg! Super edgy and I never wanted to put the book down. I have already passed the book along to two other friends and they both liked it. IT IS A MUST.. I don't see how you can complain with this one... #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better Than Gone Girl The Couple Next Door is an excellent thriller. I liked this novel more than Gone Girl. This thriller has more twists and turns. The novel challenges the reader to carefully choose which characters to trust and which characters to be skeptical of. The author will keep you guessing until the last chapter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING I loved this book from start to finish. I have passed it along to all my friends who enjoy thrillers and suspense. If you are looking for a book that grabs your attention right at the beginning, this is the one for you. I am not a huge reader, but this book i could not put down. Finished it within a couple days, every page is more intense.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Plot A couple goes to a neighbour’s dinner party, leaving their infant daughter asleep at home alone. They have a baby monitor with a broken screen and a plan to take turns going home every 1/2 hour to check on her. Unfortunately, when they return home for the night at 1:30am they find their front door ajar and their baby girl missing. The hunt for their daughter begins, and it is complicated from the start. In this book, there are characters hiding secrets, characters with devious motivations, and characters with pretty severe mental issues. Lots to keep you guessing! I thoroughly enjoyed this one. 4 Stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick Read While On the Beach My Husband and I read this by passing back and forth while on our Honeymoon. I was hesitant that the feminine nature of the story would lose his interest, but the turns and twists of the story kept him captivated and interested and gave us lots to discuss while watching the waves crash upon the beautiful beach. A few unanswered questions at the end, but otherwise an easy read for when you don't want to think too much.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good not amazing I enjoyed the book as the plot played out, the ending was okay but should have ended without the extra add on that made it stupid. Semi predictable story. Still a good read, but not my favourite.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A fast paced book that was't enough This book was okay. While the book did have its share of twists and turns, I couldn't help but feel that something was missing. I could tell Anne was a devoting mother but I just felt like she was too emotional sometimes....bordering on annoying. This book was definitely a quick read bit I felt like it was missing something...can't quite put my finger on it. The ending was probably my favourite and it would have been interesting for the author to go more into Cynthia and Graham and their bizarre marriage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A page turner This book drew me in from the start. It was an intriguing story, an easy read, and had many twists and turns to keep me interested. It was easy to determine the kidnapper towards the end but the book was still a 'wow' in my opinion. A great page turner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good mystery, kept me turning the pages! I do like good mystery books, where the hints keep making me putting the pieces together to try and figure out the plot. I did like that I had my Awwww moment half way through the book. In mystery novels, you normally get that awww moment towards the end, when you figure out the killer. But half way through was a surprise and it kept me turning the pages until the end. It wasn't the best mystery novel (some of the story line is far fetched), but for entertaining purposes and a good read, it did it's job!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A book for mystery lovers. I just finished reading this book and let me tell you, one of the best mystery and thriller books ever. The ending was totally mind blowing and I definitely loved the characters. I gave this book 4/5 because of the writing style, which is not that great but not that bad either. Well in my opinion I would like to have a different writing style but in this case it's okay. Start reading this book and prepare your self for an amazing ride of mystery and betrayal. #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This is supposed to be a page-turner?! This one gets 2 stars, and just barely. THE PROS: 1. This novel was a very quick read. I began this morning, and managed to read at least a third of it while waiting for my doctor to get to me over 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment. But I digress. 2. When we officially found out who removed the baby from the house, we can't help but think that this person is stupid, selfish, and reckless, but we also feel just slightly bad about the circumstances and recognize that despite this horrible mistake, he/she isn't a bad person. The fact that we feel this way demonstrates at least some success on the author's part. 3. Anne and Marco's reactions are very human. 4. Really interesting premise. 5. Compulsively readable. I had to find out if there was suddenly this incredible ending that made all of the following utterly worth it. THE CONS: 1. Regardless of everything else, these people left a 6-month-old baby alone from 7pm until well after midnight?! I don't care if you check in every FIFTEEN minutes instead of their thirty. I don't care if you tape the baby monitor to your chest for the entire night. No loving parent (and Anne and Marco do love Cora deeply) in their right mind would ever do that. Leave her alone to check the mailbox outside? Sure. Leave her alone while paying the pizza delivery guy? Yeah. But leaving her and going to a dinner party next door? This is by far the least believable part of this book. I mean, come on. 2. Everything is so incredibly convoluted that you can't help but wonder if the other kept trying to write her way out of the corners she kept creating. You kind of want to kick all of these people for being complete morons. Apparently wealth and ivy-league educations are not guarantees against stupidity (unsurprising, but you expect these characters to be at least slightly less insipid given their respective backgrounds). 3. The last 3 or 4 pages, despite having been built up for 3/4 of the book are so far-fetched. After everything Anne has been through, it's just not believable. Not then, not in that context. 4. Cynthia is a terrible human being. We're pretty much sure of this from the start. Yeah, whatever. But the way the author keeps bashing on her for childlessness-by-choice life is insulting and so damn repetitive. As a person who fully intends on having children one day, I can't help but speak up. Women have the right to have or not have children as they so choose, and everyone else needs to STFU about it. Cynthia's issues with kids are weirdly central to this book in a way that is completely unnecessary for the story. I have no problem with Cynthia being a villain of sorts. I do have a problem with her villain-hood being linked to something that is a personal choice for many people that has absolutely nothing to do with their character or value as a human being. 5. I predicted every single thing. The whos, the hows, the whys. All of it. Easily and from right near the beginning. The cons outweigh the pros here.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall, It's a Good Read I thought that overall this book was quite good. I am a sucker for a good mystery/suspense novel and I must say that this book did hit those marks. However, what I will also say is this, it did become a little bit flat by the end. I was surprised by the twist that came which was nice. Also, there was too much telling going on which, I feel, distracted me from being able to fully immerse myself into this novel. I did enjoy it quite a bit though.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fell Flat I really, really wanted to enjoy this book! But the ending was obvious and I really didn't care what happened to any of the characters in the book, except the missing baby girl.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Predictable The author gives it away too quickly. Rather than leave the reader in suspense for a dramatic ending, the plot becomes very predictable with every turn of the page. It's an easy read and if you're looking to pass time, then I recommend it. If you're looking for a real page turner that'll have you thinking long after you've read the book, then this isn't it. The moment I turned the last page, I forgot about it and moved on.

Read from the Book

Anne reaches clumsily for her cell phone on the dining table and checks the time. It is almost one o’clock in the morning. She’d checked on the baby at midnight. Marco had gone to check on her at twelve thirty. Then he’d gone out for a cigarette on the back patio with Cynthia, while Anne and Graham sat rather awkwardly at the littered dining table, making stilted conversation. She should have gone out to the backyard with them; there might have been a breeze. But she hadn’t, because Graham didn’t like to be around cigarette smoke, and it would have been rude, or at least inconsiderate, to leave Graham there all alone at his own dinner party. So for reasons of propriety, she had stayed. Graham, a WASP like herself, is impeccably polite. Why he married a tart like Cynthia is a mystery. Cynthia and Marco had come back in from the patio a few minutes ago, and Anne desperately wants to leave, even if everyone else is still having fun.She glances at the baby monitor sitting at the end of the table, its small red light glowing like the tip of a cigarette. The video screen is smashed—she’d dropped it a couple of days ago and Marco hadn’t gotten around to replacing it yet—but the audio is still working. Suddenly she has doubts, feels the wrongness of it all. Who goes to a dinner party next door and leaves her baby alone in the house? What kind of mother does such a thing? She feels the familiar agony set in—she is not a good mother. So what if the sitter canceled? They should have brought Cora with them, put her in her portable playpen. But Cynthia had said no children. It was to be an adult evening, for Graham’s birthday. Which is another reason Anne has come to dislike Cynthia, who was once a good friend—Cynthia is not baby-friendly. Who says that a six-month-old baby isn’t welcome at a dinner party? How had Anne ever let Marco persuade her that it was okay? It was irresponsible. She wonders what the other mothers in her moms’ group would think if she ever told them. We left our six-month-old baby home alone and went to a party next door. She imagines all their jaws dropping in shock, the uncomfortable silence. But she will never tell them. She’d be shunned. She and Marco had argued about it before the party. When the sitter called and canceled, Anne had offered to stay home with the baby—she hadn’t wanted to go to the dinner anyway. But Marco was having none of it. “You can’t just stay home,” he insisted when they argued about it in their kitchen. “I’m fine staying home,” she said, her voice lowered. She didn’t want Cynthia to hear them through the shared wall, arguing about going to her party. “It will be good for you to get out,” Marco countered, lowering his own voice. And then he’d added, “You know what the doctor said.”
