about

The second book in Rae Carson's award-winning The Girl of Fire and Thorns fantasy trilogy, perfect for fans of Game of Thrones and Kristin Cashore. Tamora Pierce called the first book, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, "A unique and engrossing read!" A seventeen-year-old princess turned war queen faces sorcery, adventure, untold power, and romance as she fulfills her epic destiny.

In The Girl of Fire and Thorns, Elisa won the war. She saved her kingdom. But no one prepared her for how hard it is to recover from a battle, or to rule a people who still don't trust her. She's still fighting—against assassination attempts and more—and her enemies lie both outside her court and within it. So Elisa will cross the ocean in search of the perilous, uncharted, and mythical source of the Godstone's power. With her go a one-eyed warrior, a loyal friend, an enemy defector, and the man she is falling in love with. A breathtaking, romantic, and dangerous second volume to Rae Carson's ambitious trilogy. Cinda Williams Chima proclaimed about the first book, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, "I LOVED this book!" and Veronica Roth agreed, saying, "Definitely recommended."

Rae Carson is the author of theNew York Times–bestselling Girl of Fire and Thorns series. Her books tend to contain lots of adventure, magic, and smart girls who make (mostly) smart choices. Originally from California, Rae Carson now lives in Arizona with her husband.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from disappointed This book was pretty good but I think I was left a little disappointed. Only because I wanted more!! The story begins where it left off. Elisa is Queen and she needs to figure out how to rule her people. Her love for Hector grows every time she sees him. Her birthday celebrations were cut short when a threat on her life takes place. When she looks to her deceased husband to find strength, she is almost killed. That attempt on her life makes her want to find more power for her Godstone. It leads her on a journey to find the Zafira. It takes a toll to get to it, but she eventually does. I wont ruin the ending but even though a lot happened in this book, I felt like it just wasn't enough. This author is clever. I have to read the next book now. It's a good thing I already have it! Ta!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real coming of age story This sequel to The Girl of Fire and Thorns is nothing short of fabulous. In the first story we watched Elisa find her self worth as a person and bearer and now we see her come into her own as a sovereign. I really enjoyed reading how Elisa found power for her God stone by finding power in herself. I think that's the key word for this book. Power. Power in status, power in knowledge, power in love, and power in one's self. The book is thick with heart stopping actions and enthralling dialogue to satisfy any reader. Everything from assassination attempts, discovering historical secrets, frustrations of the heart and a beautiful heroine who even in her failure is stunning, clever and graceful. I think in the next book Elisa is really going to come into her role as queen and truly be a force to be reckoned with. I just really hope that at the end she and Vector will finally be happy together. That's all I want.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best "Second" A Trilogy Ever Had Second books are hard. Not everyone can manage an "Empire Strikes Back". With CROWN OF EMBERS, Carson not only attempts to equal the awesomeness of her debut GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS, she attempts to surpass it. And I have to say, she is wildly, wildly successful. CROWN OF EMBERS takes Elisa further along her path as a new Queen and the Chosen of God. It's hard, and she can't do what her heart is calling her to do, but she walks it anyway. She uses her brain and thinks on her feet, and it is amazing to read. And I don't often say this, but the romantic developments BLEW. ME. AWAY. The book is also beautifully written. Carson's world is stark and brilliant, and it was great to really get lost in the story as it unfolded. If you are looking for a fantastically written book about a marvelous and strong character (cast of characters, really. Everyone in the book is pretty amazing, even the villains), this is certainly the book for you.
