"Teeming with hidden magic and fiery romance."—Sabaa Tahir, #1 New York Times bestselling author of An Ember in the Ashes

Perfect for fans of Shadow and Bone and Red Queen, The Crown’s Game is a thrilling and atmospheric historical fantasy set in Imperial Russia about two teenagers who must compete for the right to become the Imperial Enchanter—or die in the process—from debut author Evelyn Skye.

Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know.  The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love . . . or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear . . . the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

Evelyn Skye is a bestselling author of The Crown's Game.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it I went into it expecting something like the Hunger Games, but was pleasantly surprised at how it turned out to be more of a gorgeous magical adventure than some stressful fight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One of my favourite books I love this book and I love the feeling when I get when I read it. It is well written and you feel like you are there. The author brings to life the setting and the characters. When I want a book that combines fanatasy, friendship, magic, romance, and intrigue, this is the book I reach for. I oringially thought this book was a stand-alone and it could be. I prefer this book over the sequel because I don't like how the characters change in the second book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The storyline is original and intriguing I really enjoyed this book in large part because, while it is obviously a fantasy novel, the storyline is original and intriguing. A mixture of history and fantasy combined with fantastic characters who are drawn to one another but also forced to be mortal enemies, I was riveted by the storyline. My favourite character was Vika. She is strong, sensitive, and caring. And I couldn’t help rooting for her through the entire book. On the other hand, Nikolai and Pasha are also engaging characters. The plot was fast-paced and I was completely invested in the storyline. I know some people hate love triangles but this story never really came across in that way. There is certainly tension between Nikolai and Pasha but Vika’s feelings are not in question. I’ll be reading the sequel to this one next and I can’t wait for her next series Circle of Shadows!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good I really enjoyed the magical aspect of this novel - although, I would probably recommend to read this and not the sequel - regardless if you want a quick, fantasy read look no further than The Crown's Game!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great A magical tale that hit all the right notes. A beautiful world with genuinely complex characters that you can't help but fall in love with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surpassed all expectations! This was the book I needed in my life! I had very little expectations for this book and I had so much fun reading it. An incredibly atmospheric book full of magic, enchantments, and secrets. And there is a magical competition, which really, can you even go wrong with that in a book? Vika, Nikolai and Pasha are all precious little cinnamon roles who deserve better and you bet your bottom dollar I will be jumping into The Crown's Fate immediately!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Crown's Games I liked the characters and the plot, but I thought it needed more action.
Date published: 2017-07-21
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wasn't great Wasn't great, very 2-dimensional plot structure. Not many story arcs to keep it interesting. Setting was cool but I had a hard time caring about this book.

Editorial Reviews

“The Night Circus meets Cinderella in an alternate Russia. This extraordinary world has everything from insanely creative acts of magic, political intrigue, hope against all odds, romance, and oh-such-high-stakes-non-stop action. It is hands-down honest-to-goodness brilliant. Bravo.”
