about

An instant bestseller!

By #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black, the first book in a stunning new series about a mortal girl who finds herself caught in a web of royal faerie intrigue.

Of course I want to be like them. They're beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him--and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.
Holly Black is the bestselling author of contemporary fantasy novels, including Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale and the #1 New York Times bestselling Spiderwick series. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A triumph I love Holly Black's work. But this new series is particularly phenomenal. Exciting, sensual, dramatic, I loved it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good I've had my eye on this book for a while and when I finally purchased it I started reading it right away. I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed. I didn't fall in love with the characters or Faerie and I found that I kept wanting more. In saying that, I am currently reading the sequel and I'm currently enjoying that one more.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from So overhyped This book was so over-hyped. I don't usually write reviews for books that I rate 2 stars are lower, but I was so disappointed with this story, that I feel like I need to state my case. I know that some people absolutely loved it, and that's totally fine, but I really don't get it. So much of the character "development" just didn't make any sense. I found myself constantly having to take breaks because Jude was driving me off the deep end. She was so hopelessly slow on the uptake, she kept on stating things with absolutely no evidence, and I just could not stand her. And there was not a single other character whom I could stand. I was uninvested the entire time, and I actually kept skipping parts as I got to the end of the story.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Back to Black Holly Black never ceased to amazing me. The Cruel Prince was a fantastic read, and if you love all of Black’s other fairy stories, this one will not disappoint.
