A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel's suicide.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, thelegendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this.

Introducing Cormoran Strike, this is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potterseries andThe Casual Vacancy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A new era If you're going to pick up this book because you saw J.K. Rowling's name on the jacket, be forewarned, do not read it with Harry Potter in mind. It is in a league of its own. With all that in mind, it's a great read, and I can't wait to pick up the rest of the books in the series. You can definitely see J.K.'s writing style, especially her skill for phonetically describing accents in the dialogue. The characters are believable and the plot is interesting and easy to follow along. It is definitely becoming a favourite private detective series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I wanted to love it more I found this book really hard to get invested into the story, until it was a little too late. I felt I didn't have a reason to stay with the characters. That being said, after reading some of the other reviews, I might give it another go

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great start to a new series !! This is a great start to new series. I really enjoyed the writing, and the suspense in this novel. I am really looking forward to continuing on with this series. *As a side note I still haven't read Harry Potter, so this was my first JK Rowling experience*

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved the plot I grew up reading Harry Potter, so Cormoran Strike is quite a change. However, I really enjoy the build up and the many layers the plot gives you before slapping the real story in front of you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Surprisingly good! I knew Rowling can write, but I didn't expect her to manage that well with a detective story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recommended Read! Slowly builds up to an amazing ending! Would definitely recommend for fans of twisting tales. Not predictable at all.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Well written.. I enjoyed this book because of the quality of the descriptive writing. Characters are interesting although the description of Cormoran's injury becomes a bit repetitious at times. A solid read but not great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It should've been obvious but... I bought this during a trip on an island and happened to stumble upon a book store. It was on sale and I never thought that I would love it as much as I did. The ending should've been obvious but the author pointed me in so many different directions I didn't know what to think anymore. Overall, I'd read the sequels 'cause I need more Robin and Cormoran in my life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great series I hope JK Rowling continues to write in this series, it has become the adult version of Harry Potter. Always waiting for the next. An easy read as compared to the more thrilling murder mysteries.
Date published: 2017-02-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic Rowling voice in an entirely new context As I'm sure many did, I bought this based on my love of Harry Potter and all things Rowling. It was a fun experience reading Rowling in the context of a genre entirely different from Harry Potter. Her well-loved writing style and voice are still entirely present, and the story itself is enjoyable to read. The mystery is well thought out in classic Rowling style, where no detail is insignificant and every character comes alive through superb development. Overall a great read from a fantastic author who is, so far, excelling at a new genre.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Harry Potter A real departure from the Harry Potter stories. Well written and two very likeable characters. Interesting that the protagonist is missing a limb - makes him a very real person. Excited to read more in this series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK book! This book had a great story and a good plot twist, but I had a hard time getting into it. There is a lot of description and it is hard to remember all the details. I would recommend it, but don't expect to read it in one sitting...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read Excellent start to the series. A good introduction to the characters, their stories, and the kind of gripping plot we can expect from the Cormoran Strike books. The writing had a good dose of humour as well, which I rather enjoyed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Book I really enjoyed reading this book. It kept me interested and I found it hard to put it down. If you like mystery and suspense, then I think you will enjoy this book as well. I cant wait to read the rest of the series.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cuckoo's Calling I had such high hopes for this book that I think I ruined it for myself. I absolutely love The Harry Potter series so I figured this would be amazing. I found it dragged on way too much and I almost found it a little stereotypical? The characters all seemed way too made up and unrealistic to even be real people and I found the main character hard to like/relate to. Overall, just not what I had hoped in a series unfortunately. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy read that sucks you in and makes you want more I had no expectations for this series, and I'm so glad that I read them all. I really enjoyed the plot lines, the characters, the details of the descriptions of locations. Easy reading, entertaining, and on a couple nights, made me stay awake longer than my normal bed time. Enjoyable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful story A shake off from Harry Potter, although not magical, still has a great quality of it's own. Intriguing plot with characters that turn out to be a little more than what they seem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read this series right now! The Cormoran Strike series is one of the best series I've recently read. You are guaranteed to fall in love with Cormoran Strike. Every time you think you know who the culprit is, you're proven wrong again and again. Written under the pen name Robert Gailbraith, J.K. Rowling knocked it out of the park with this mature new series!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read. Liked the use of real places. Liked the use of real places, as i was able to recognize a lot of the names from places i've been in London as well. The book reads very well, and the start to what i think is a great series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun, a little mindless A little predictable but good read

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad at all JK Rowling proves herself once again but in an entirely new genre. The main protagonist, Cormoran Strike has an interesting backstory and I like how his character doesn't rely on the stereotypical detective archetype. I found the plot to be a little slow moving at first so it took me some time to get through it, but it definitely gets more exciting at the end. Can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good JK Rowling has proven that she is an adaptable writer. This was an enjoyable and different thriller, with well developed characters that are usually are not found in the first book of a series. Well worth the read.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not a bad read but not that exciting I read this purely because of JK Rowling. It's ok, but i found the ending a bit lame. it didnt really catch me. #plumreviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It took me a little bit to really get into this book, but once I did I could not put it down! Have now read the whole series to date, cant wait for the next one! Highly recommend, great mystery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly Recommend! This book may not have the huge, shocking twist that seems to be trendy in novels right now but it is extremely well-written and unlike the books focusing purely on shocking readers with a surprise twist, this book has an plot that is amazing throughout the entire book and characters who are so well-developed they seem like real people.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from okay... honestly, it was predictable...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Average read This book was average for a beginner thriller novel, I read all the Cormoran Strike books and this one was my least favorite.
Date published: 2016-11-24
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic start to a great thriller series! The Cuckoo's Calling stars one of the most unique leads in a thriller series, Cormoran Strike. He is definitely one of my favourite fictional characters. Robin didn't grow on me but she did in the later books. The Cuckoo's Calling, as we all know, was written by J.K. Rowling. Her incredible talent for plot-writing, pacing, and character development is evident in this series. if you love thrillers/mysteries, you will love the Cormoran Strike novels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Great to see another side of JK. Just like the Harry Potter series, it is so easy to love the characters, they feel real, and the story is great too. Keeps you guessing til the end.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Slow moving I found this book very slow moving, until more than half way through when it eventually picked up. I don't think I'll read any others in the series, because it didn't impress me that much.
Date published: 2016-11-06
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good Fun to read. JK Rowling is an engaging writer generally (with the exception of the Casual Vacancy). Mystery threads are well woven, if not particularly remarkable. Only thing that bothered me was that she is obviously sowing the seeds for an eventual romance between the main detective guy and his new attractive and smart assistant (though she is currently engaged to some douche-y guy). Such a cliche! Didn't happen in this book, but mark my words, it will eventually happen as long as this book series continues.
Date published: 2016-11-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great JK Rowling is an incredible writer, this book and all three in the series are extremely detailed!
Date published: 2016-11-04
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Loved it. I loved this book. i love harry potter. so there might have been a bit bias to begin with. I picked this up for JK. I was not disappointed. Just like HP, it was very detailed in the starting, so might seem slow to a lot of people, and picks up all of a sudden and you have so much stuff going on at the same time. i can't wait to finish the series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read! I really enjoyed reading this book. It did start of sort of slow but it soon began to pick up the pace and I couldn't tear myself away from this book. I would recommend this read for sure!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic storytelling! I wasn't sure what to expect but the story description piqued my interest and I love mysteries, so I gave it a go... and I am very glad I did. Immediately I was drawn to Strike; he's the kind of character I enjoy reading about. He's very human, but also extremely intriguing. And Galbraith's writing is off-the-charts good. I am a fan of the mystery aspect of the story as well; really didn't see that end coming. One mark of a really good book, for me, is how quickly I'm involved in the story and with "The Cuckoo's Calling" I was right in from the beginning. I am looking forward to many more Cormoran Strike mysteries.
